I've looked and tried to find the answer before asking:
Is there a DIY way to have the car's ECU re-learn a new set of TPMS without having to go somewhere and have it done?

I only remember seeing a DYI disable for them.

The TPWS can only learn new sensors with the use of a service tool. Most tire shops (and of course dealers can do it).

Do you happen to know what the service tool is? My fiance has a crap load of tools from when he used to work as a mechanic, so it's possible he has it already. That's the main reason I asked.

Not a mechanical tool, but an electronic one - Either the Toyota TechStream tool or a TPMS diagnostic tool.

ok honest question here.... does it matter if you dont use your sensors at all on aftermarket wheels?
Does it matter? To a Federal Bureaucrat it matters. To me, ..... I just disabled the TPMS and have no sensors at all in my aftermarket summer wheels. My winter wheels still have them but they are just useless rotating mass now.

If it doesn't bother you to have that low tire pressure warning light constantly lit, and you'll keep your tire pressure checked regularly, it's no biggie.

I don't like having the TPMS as it is. But wouldn't it be cool if it would give you a readout of the actual pressure in each tire?

So far as I know, every time you change wheels (if going between winter/summer), you have to pay to have the TPMS re-calibrated. And because of that I simply disabled mine. I check my tires pressures regularly, I don't need a (generally useless) electronic babysitter.
tirerack.com sells the ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool for $135. luck123@toyotanation has a review of it

It would - They report pressure and temperature, so it would be very cool to have a live display of both for each tire. One of these days I'll figure out the protocol for the Yaris TPWS and make a device to do so. Crashy will be my test platform, since she has my 09 steelies with the sensors. Both of my sets of alloys that I run on my 09 are sensor free.

Hmmm sounds suspiciously like mirror mounted turn signals...

how did you disable your TPMS? I'm looking for a solution to end once and for all the constant tire pressure light. I didnt get the sensors installed on my after market rims..and don't want to deal with the light anymore

so, in a nutshell, just cut the brown wire?
i read your original post then the pg 3 info w/ all the parts from radio shack...post 115 just looks like the brown wire was cut and tied to the white wire #6. is this correct?
and if so, what did you use to connect the brown and white wires?

I went through a couple iterations of the mod and then one day realized that the simplest method was what I drew in 115.
You are correct with simply cutting the brown and connecting it to the white. You can use a simple tap splice connector to do it (available from any autoparts store).

If you look at the first page of that thread, I have pictures of the TPWS module and the connector with the wires.
hm. I'll look into it asap. Thanks much!
btw, not that I'm too concerned, but does this void any sort of warranty for electrical parts...and if at some point down the road I DID want to use TPMS, would it be easy to re-wire?

Nothing voids the warranty, unless something fails as a direct result.
To reverse this mod, you simply disconnect the brown from the white and splice it back together. The switch method allows you go back and forth by simply flipping a switch.

Did the splicing today, and it works! thanks CTScott!

So... would this be something that could be done via the Scangauge II's XGauge feature? Xgauge allows you to send arbitrary queries to the ECU and display the response, scaling and/or offsetting it as appropriate. Essentially, it allows you to define arbitrary new gauges. That really would be quite slick.

No. From what I've found with things like turning off the seatbelt chime via can message to the cluster, you need to send more than one command, and the Xgauge mode only supports sending one packet.
