Rather than use a cigarette lighter USB charger, I'd like to hard wire a USB port (or two) into my Yaris console. Has anyone found a clean solution for this? Something that you can flush mount to a flat panel would be great. I'd like the output of the port to be 1A (1000mA).
Thanks all!

I'm just going to get a different head unit for my car that has a built in one. Like this one from Pioneer.

That solution is a bit more pricey than I'd like :D

Can't you just take that, snip off the lighter end, and wire it in?
Sorry electronics is not my strength.

You can, yes, but I'd like a slightly "cleaner" install. I'm also not sure what sort of amperage that would push to the connector. Maybe CTScott will chime in and enlighten us :D

Again, not quite what you asked for, but pretty unobtrusive:
Belkin Micro USB Charger (flush fitting lighter socket.)

Not exactly what I wanted, but that is a very nice alternative. Thank you!

Not quite as clean a solution as I'd like, but that's definitely the right track. Thanks!

There are different head units that are cheaper that I have seen with a USB port.

I know, but I like the Alpine deck I'm currently using.

take a look at the fuse for the cigarette lighter for a clue as to if a 1 amp charging source is possible. If the fuse is 1 amp, you should be able to draw 1 amp from it for an hour or two without a problem. If the fuse is greater than 1 amp, you should be able to draw 1 amp from it with no problems at all.
You could always wire in your own fused circuit using 12awg wire, which would be good for say 20 amps if you wanted. You could then run any additional items off that in the future too. www.partsexpress.com (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=269-904) has one right now for $2.50
then you just have to search through a compnay like www.digikey.com (http://www.digikey.com/) or www.mouser.com (www.mouser.com)to find a surface mount female USB port.
i'm sure if you did a google search for the pin outs for a USB port you could find instructions or an image that would show which each contact does. I once knew what they were... I want to say that they are 5volt & 7volt lines usually, but not positive... make sure that your device you are charging can accept 12v in, you wouldn't want to run a 12volt circuit to a device that could only handle 7v.

Thank you talnlnky, that was very helpful! The "surface mount female USB port" is the keyword I was looking for. If I can find that I can wire up the rest.
