Mothers Back-to-Black

After reading somewhere on the boards about Meguiars #40 being a good option for the exterior plastic and rubber, I hit the autostore. They didn't have it, but recommended Mothers "Back-to-black" as a good option for conditioning.

does anyone have experience with "back-to-black"? Rating?

yeah i have it, and since i own a 2000 echo, i use ALOT of it. (google this car if you haven't seen it.. its got a ton of trim.)

all in all it works pretty well. initially it works excellently but after a few weeks it fades a little bit. to remedy this I just applied it, buffed off, and applied right after again. that seems to make it stick more.

overall i'd give it a 8/10.

I'm sorry to "sell" #40 so hard, but it really works well. Unlike most treatments for rubber, #40 strips the crud and doesn't make things greasy.

I have both products in my detailing cart but i prefer the consitency of meguires back to black is more watery.

I don't think any of the major retail stores carry it. I've never seen it before but I ordered some from Amazon. Since it's a dye I think it's really only suitable for extremely weathered plastic/vinyl (as happens on the Jeep fenders) so I think Back to Black or other readily available products are best suited to keeping the Yaris trim in good shape.

None of the products like "back to black" (which I have) last very long
They are silicone based and just give a temporary improvement to the apearance.

On my Celica, I use a product called "Forever Black" to restore the black plastics. It's actually a black dye and not a "geasy" cover up.

However, the Yaris actually has dark grey plastics not black. This is a growing trend with cars as it turns grey anyway with age so, they just start off grey.
So, the silicone based cover ups are all we have to use right now.

Has anyone used Mothers Back to Black for their rubber on their tires? Is it recommended?

If so, how were the results?

I'm detailing right know (Waxing) and later on will be placing Mothers on the trim. I don't have any wheel/rubber conditioner products.

SmartWax "SmartDressing" is their interior product, works perfectly on tires as a perfect dressing. Never used back to black, sorry.

It's not a greasy, silicone based cover up like the rest of the products I've used but, a black dye and a UV blocker that restores the like new look of tires without the glossy shine.
It also lasts for months, not weeks or days and it is not washed away by water.

I did not use anything on my tires detailing today... I'll post pics on this Forum. I washed with Meguiar's Gold Class, Detailed windows and lights with Stoners Invisible Glass, waxed with Gold Class Liquid Wax. Used Mothers Back to Black on the trim...

Turned out great! :biggrin: Took me 6 hours...

A good inexpensive way to take wax off the black plastic is peanut butter

Original Armour All works just as good . Most people don't know how to use Armour All .

The proper way to use Armour All is to apply with clean new cloth , wipe off with different cloth , and then buff with yet another (clean ) cloth .

You only need a few thing to keep your car looking new .

1. Armour all . To keep all rubber and plastic ( inside and out ) hydrated .
2. A good wax ( I prefer Meguiar's Gold Class or Tech 2.0 )
3. Stoner invisible glass
4. Rain-x
5. If your like me , a can of flat black paint to keep the muffler looking good . Nothing says ugly more than a rusted muffler .

Some people use clay bars , but I found that a guitar pick ( plastic , .73 mm , Tortex brand ) works just good and is way cheaper ($.50)

A better way to keep wax off the plastic is Armour All the plastic before you wax . The wax won't stick to the Armour All

Meguiars is a good product,i use the wet look and glod class,when polishing with Meguiars u need to finish up with gold class to seal the polish, the stratch X work wonders on those swirl marks,now u see it now u dont, but then u need to apply the gold class, the polish for chrome is like a paste that come in a red tin, that make your polish dish mags shine like new, once again apply gold class,

and if u wash the car they way they say u must, it works, but it takes to long to do, and u need to change water to many times if the car is really dirty,
