buying tires online

Hello everyone. I am interested in hearing whether anyone out there has used tirerack.com for ordering tires. For those that have, why did you use tirerack.com instead of your local tire shop? Doesn't shipping and handling drive up the cost of the tires? Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

I just used them. Got wheels and tires delivered to my place last Thrusday. I decided to go with them because even with shipping it was cheaper then discount tires. Also I liked the wheels they had over discount tires. Tire Rack was more in my price range. Shipping is very fast. Of course I live in Illinois and they where shipped from Indiana, but I placed the order on Tuesday Night and got them Thrusday afternoon. All was tracked online through UPS. Sometimes buying from Tirerack won't save you much money (if any) after you factor in the shipping and mounting/balance. Keep your eyes peeled for online sales.

www.discounttire.com is another good one (free shipping is pretty frequent).

It's just a matter of catching the right deal at the right time, or make friends with a local tire installer :D

I've been using Tire Rack for years. And you can have your order delivered directly to certain Tire Dealers who offer a discount for mount and balance for Tire Rack customers.

I bought tires from tirerack for my 07 a couple years ago. I live about an hour from a tirerack warehouse(Shreveport, LA) so I just drove over there and picked them up. So ended up costing around $200 for the tires. I then took them to Wal-Mart and had them put on for about $40 which includes free lifetime rotations and balancing. Shipping would have been about $35 but my wife and I were going to Shreveport anyway to go shopping and to the casinos.

The tires still look brand new with over 12,000 miles on them.

Thanks for the link. I had a bad experience at Tires Plus the last time I bought tires; I think I would rather go online this time, as long as it is not more expensive.

Although it wasn't tirerack, I once bought 5 tires and 5 wheels for my trailer from a company off ebay. They came mounted and balanced. The shipping cost was offset by not paying sales tax.

One more question: Do I have to pay extra for the tires if I want the TPMS to work? How exactly does the TPMS work?

yes you can move your old ones into your new ones at the tire shop or buy a new set
i used discounttiredirect.com and their support is great, just give them a call.

i actually looked at tirerack.com last fall and found a place that was a little cheaper. i feel like i took a little risk using that company, but they had my tires on my doorstep in about a week. i went with it because i saved a good chunk of money on the tires i wanted and i was planning on having the mechanics at my work put them on for me. I've ordered tyres from discounttiredirect.com several times, and I've always found them very reasonably priced, often with special discounts, always with free shipping, and always with outstanding customer service.

a msg to OP. check out performance tires plus. My fiancee ordered rims a tires off there. very good customer service and mounting and balancing is free on packages and also select tires and rims have free shipping on now. Prices seem to be very good also.

No you don't have to pay extra for the tires.

I order my first set of snows with spare rims for each vehicle from TireRack or DiscontTire.
They come UPS preballanced and ready to mount.

When they wear out, then I replace the tires at the local wholesale tire shop.

The only issue I've had is that DiscountTire sent the set for the Yaris with locking lug nuts instead of hub rings as needed.

I've found getting brand name tires from TireRack to be a better experience than discount tires from a chain auto parts store such as VIP or PepBoys.

I got my set of winter tires from discounttire, and had them shipped to the States... i drove the 45mins across the border to pick them up and balanced them at Sears in Champlain, NY. Was the best deal i've ever got.

TireRack has shipping points near most populated areas. I often get the tires the next day. You also get to choose the ones you want and read the evaluations of each tire. I like it!

I used Tire Rack and took my tires to Walmart to be installed. For 2 tires I only paid about 10 bucks for mounting and I wasn't charged for balance. You save a little money by bringing up the wheels and tires in a different car

Going to be purchasing some tires from either Tire Rack or DiscountTireDirect. It just depends who can get their tires in fast enough. Tire Rack has the one's I want on backorder :(

Price is WAY better on US sites than it is in Canada. Especially since our $ is about even.

$300 price difference. I was buying 17x65? tires for another car I own.
