It only took the Army 25 years to make it happen.
The load is a proximity programmed 20mm round, so no depleted uranium. That makes sense because they fire over living quarters. I have expereinced the effectiveness at least a dozen times. It's actually fairly interesting, the control booth for this piece is a lot like a video game. This video was after I had fired the piece. It was a Colonel trying to fill my shoes. It took him a minute to get the guts up. :)
The answer is, I was filming this one. I have another one of one of the Warrant Officers holding the camera while I fired the piece.
I'll have a few more videos once I get out of Ft. Lewis and back to normal life. I have a pretty cool little test session on an M134 Dillon Aero mini gun...

Sweet! My older brother works for a civilian owned trucking outfit hauling stuff in Iraq. He works within the airport in Baghdad and he told me in an e-mail about these guns that are used to destroy mortar rounds and rockets fired towards the airport. Awesome to see one in action. Thanks a bunch sqcomp.

Counter Rocket And Mortar system. CRAM
What I can't express to you guys is how loud this is from a distance. It's like a ratty two stroke at max rpm... multiplied by a thousand. The first time you hear it go off, it's all you can do to NOT hit the ground and search for cover.

It's programmed differently and about 25 years more modern than the original ship-borne defence system. As for the effectiveness, I remember one of the CRAMs actually knocked a mortar out of the air into a body of water.

No doubt! I like that job description. I suppose after tomorrow, I can officially say that I don't do anything for a few months.
When we rotate back to the world, we have some time off for a few months before we have to get back to doing what we do.
...and what is that? I dunno. Little things here and there. I suppose I'd just be a knuckle dragging infantryman if I had to go to a regular Army line unit. I'm swiftly becoming too old for the young man heroic numb above the shoulders jobbies. My back is telling me this in spades.
I suppose what I was really good at was teaching people how to do certain jobs as assigned by my chain of command. The last mission was all about biometrics information. I'll leave it at that.
...Minority Report isn't an idea that is out of the question anymore. It makes me shivver sometimes know what we can do.
