Replacing Tires

This is my first post, but I had another account that I used a year or so ago. I graduated college and they closed my college e-mail so I can't use the forgot password.

Anyway...I had the oil changed today and was going to get a tire rotation done while I was out, but they stated that the tread was too low for them to do it and that I needed new tires. I'm just wondering what the expected mileage for the factory tires is? We're at about 31,000 miles on our 2008 Yaris Sedan and had to replace one tire a couple of months ago due to a huge staple going through it, but all the other tires are factory.

Tires have wear indicators. When they start showing it's time to replace.

I have 47,000 on my original tires and they're still good.

My OEM Bridgestone lasted 40.000

My OEM tires lasted 42,000/2 years, and got very ugly/worn down by the time I replaced them.

My OEM Dunlops (Treadwear 340) are wearing very smooth and should be ready for replacement @ 50k miles; over 40k miles on them now and still in pretty good shape, depth-wise.

My Bridgestone Potenza RE92's are pretty well worn with just over 30K on them. I suspect 40K is all they're worth and is reflective of the tread wear warranty Bridgestone gives them. But they've been a good tire-never needed rebalancing from the day I bought the car new and wore evenly with regular rotations.

It is interesting that the tire place where you bought one tire didn't suggest getting all new tires, while an oil change place deemed that new tires were necessary.

Get way for the shop to make $$$. Did they recommend changing your hydrocelator too?? They should be replaced every 15k miles!

FYI, I change my own oil and rotate my own tires. I don't trust lube shops!

If it was a lube shop that suggested the tires needed to be replaced, doubt they were trying to get into OP's pockets. They were either: just honest & conscientious, or too lazy and/or too busy to do the rotation at that time...doubt that the lube-shop stocked tires and had a tire machine and computer balancer on the premises to seal the deal.

I've always just taken it to Wal-mart because my parents work there...I live in an apartment and don't have access to doing it myself or I would.
