A quick question: I need to replace my OEM tyres (185/60 R15 on 5.5Jx15 steel rims), but they are rare and expensive here in Australia ($140+ per corner).

195/55 R15s, a "performance" tyre is $10-$20 cheaper, so I am considering them. Some tyre shops recommend this, others say it's a bad idea.

Also, would I need new rims ?

Does anyone here have any experience ?

TIA,

Mat

I would ask to try them out for a hundred miles.

Just order from tire rack (not sure what shipping would be), the 185/60 15 are like $50 or so each. Store brand ones are like $35.

195/55-15 is a good fit for the Yaris. A touch wide for the stock 5.5" wide wheel, but not enough to be problematic. Most 195's are spec'ed for 5.5-7.0" wheels.

195/55/15 is a good fitment for the Yaris. Recommended wheel width for a 195mm tyre is 5.0-7.0, so no worries whatsoever.

However, 205/55/15 is a better replacement size for the 185/60/15. Recommended wheel width for a 205mm tyre is 5.5-7.5, so a bit tight but a very safe fitment. Many Yaris owners with stock suspension (or a mild drop) run 205/55/15's.

Thanks guys!

Looks like the 195/55s are OK, but check the brand for 5.5Jx15 compatibility.

Tyre Rack has 23 tyres, most in the US$60-70 range (AU$70-80). Far cheaper than here. But looks like they ship to US and Canada only :(
