Hello fellow Yaris owners,

I've had my Yaris for three years and a half now. Two days ago I got into the car. It was 5 pm, the weather was fairly warm, and I hadn't used the car since 11 am.

When I started the car, the rpm went on 1500 like it used to do, and in two seconds it dropped to 300~400, the car started to shake for a little bit like it was choking, and then the rpm went back on 1100 approx, but the needle was pulsing to ~1400 every half a second, and the pulsing stayed for a minute, even when the rpm dropped to 800. The car was on park all the time. When I put it on drive, I felt the pulse effect for the first 500 meters, when the gas pedal was slightly pressed, like it can't accelerate as it normally does and after that when it picked up speed everything disappeared. The car was behaving normally on the road, even when coming at full stops.

This thing happened to me three times before, but it's the first time the rpm drops like this. What do you think is the problem? I've changed the spark plugs and the air filter recently.

Thanks in advance:)

What plugs did you use. In my research i am finding that the Bosch Premium Class Platinum+4, work the best on the Yaris. if you bought the cheap plugs from A Wal-Mart like store that is probably your problem. Goto an AutoZone, or Advanced Auto or even a NAPA like store and get a good set of plugs. That is probably the problem. BTW, be sure they are gapped correctly too.

Thanks people :-)
And could it be the fuel pump or the fuel filter?

it could be, but it is most likely the MAF. I highly doubt it is the plugs.

Run a good fuel system cleaner. That should clean out the fuel lines and fuel injectors. That's fuel sytem cleaner.

I've had this happen once or twice to me too. I reved the engine a few times and then turned it off and it started back up fine. I've noticed if I let the fuel pump kick in before I start the car, by turning the key all the way w/o actually starting it, I have never had that problem.

I forgot to add you should let the key sit in that on position for 10-15 seconds before starting the car.

It's not the plugs. Cheapo plugs will work just fine if they're properly gapped. They just don't last as long as the platinum or iridium ones.

Well guess I have to replace the MAF.. and the air filter and the radiator and the front bumper and the hosing.. and the airbags. Lost control on a tight turn, almost fell off a cliff if it weren't for the tree I hit.. Drive safe people !
