Now I know that a front mount is intended to be mounted on the front of the car but is there really any other reason to keep from using it as a top mount if I can find a way to mount it up there?
I'm having trouble finding very many universal top mounts so I was just wondering if I should be completely ruling out front mounts.

well the reason for the front mount is for fresh air to cool the charged air now for the top mount you will need to make some sort of air duct to make it functional (suabru style posibly just a thought). The mazda speed 3 and 6 use top mount but they have a airduct that flows fresh air through the intercooler. A good top mount for you would be finding a intercooler from a rx7 turbo II which is top mount all you would need to make is the piping. That intercooler has decent airflow for being oem part.

A universal intercooler can be used as a front mount or top mount.

thanks to the both of ya. i'll look for an rx7 but most car specific intercoolers i've found so far are hella expensive.

^ or eBay, if you know what you're looking for. Is this for a turbo application?
measure for the size you need first: dimensions and inlet/outlet pipe size, based on your project.

I think it really matters if you are turbo'd. Shorter runs with the piping to a top mount = faster spooling? i think?

Yeah I have that PE supercharger so the piping is already there. Runs over the top of the engine then back down around into TB. So the way the piping runs makes it ideal for a top mount. I just wasn't sure if there were any substantial differences between top and front mounts as far as how the work.
Pretty dumb question in hindsight but I just wanted to make sure before I bought anything.
And I've always considered myself a Californian at heart. Or a Bay Stater.

I actually bought one on ebay for $40 about a year ago from a rx7 turbo II
