This CAN'T be right?

:iono: I just filled my 2007 LB 5 spd manual Yaris, and have driven 113.7 miles on an 1/8, (hasn't come off the 1/8 tank mark since 68.7 miles), of a tank of gas. IF, the Yaris has an 11.1 gallon tank and each 1/8 of a tank equals 1.3875 gallons then that would mean my MPG is in the area of 81.9459 miles per gallon...This CAN'T be right, it's IMPOSSIBLE....Isn't it? Something MUST be wrong with the fuel gauge....any thoughts? :confused:

That LCD gage is an inaccurate measure.
do a tank by tank analysis for the correct mileage

Like any other fuel gauge, it is going to go down very slowly at first and then drop faster. You cannot estimate your gas mileage by the first eighth of tank with any kind of accuracy.

The gauge is not quite linear, like most gas gauges aren't. It's got a typical analog sender in the tank, only the display is digital.

The first 1/8 is "big". The middle 1/8ths are probably around 1.2 gallons each. The bottom 1/8th is a good 2 gallons. The last bar will blink at 1/8 tank. When it blinks faster, you've got about a gallon left.

That's what I was figuring. I am doing the DFCO thingy and I have never seen this high a miles reading before on the first 1/8th of a tank, normally, 45 to 50 before the LCD drops a bar... Maybe I'll get that 40 MPG now... we'll have to see after this tank.

I just got 75 miles on the first "bar"...given that rate, I should get 600 miles to a tank. If I get 380 miles, I'm doing well...

Track your usage over several tanks and average your MPG to get a more accurate idea of how well your car is doing.

yup , those bars can be deceiving . Can get 80+ miles from 1st bar lost and then lose 2nd bar at 45 miles later . So , best to wait when it reaches a half a tank or more ( 4 > 6 bars gone ) . Refilled earlier today with 5 bars gone ( or was it 4 ? :rolleyes: ) and produced 39.23 m.p.g. with our '08 automatic sedan using 91 octane from SUNOCO . Not so bad .

Why wouldn't you just look at the amount of fuel put in? (As in, the reading on the gas station pump or your receipt?)

Ha, in my '05 HB I once went just over 200km on the first bar. Ended up getting about 740km on that tank.

Yeppers... My last readings I got 112 miles on the first Bar... If that were the case I would have gotten at least 784 mi (112mi x 7 Bars) on a tank.

Would be nice if my Yaris got close to 80 MPG! Reality is more in the upper forties, though.

Think of it this way. When you fill the tank there very little air left in the top, especially if you fill it to the top of the filler neck. So the little float is pushed up against the top until of the tank until the level drops enough for it to start falling. That could easily be up to 2-3 gallons of gas.

Ive figured this out myself actually.

the first bar is 2 gallons
2nd to the 7th is 1.25 gallons each
slow flash happens for .6 gallons
fast flash happens for 1 gallons

add it up it equals 11.1 gallons
keep an eye on it while you drive, you should tend to agree with me.
