View Full Version : Need a "Mild" Drop

Hey folks, since acquiring the 17" rims I've been somewhat unhappy with my new 4x4 stance and would like to see the Yaris get a very mild drop (lowering springs?)

http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac316/mywebshare44/2010%20Toyota%20Yaris/need_lowered.jpg

I want to maintain the ride quality and don't want to feel every pebble/rock, dips, rtc. on the road. I'm just looking for a slight drop (1" at most) and something that would not require me to replace the oem struts or need a camber kit.

Any brand of springs you can recommend and/or can recommend a reputable place where I can take the car to get it done around the GTA? I'm mechanically challenged and not really interested in DIY'ing it (no tools).

Thanks!

Eibach Prokits for a 1" drop. These springs are what Toyota Canada installs if you get lowering springs from the dealership.

Try sending thebarber a PM. He may be still selling his.

you can put TRD springs in consideration too, 1.2" drop, both front & rear.

But first, PM thebarber, it's better to deal locally.

Thanks WeeYari and beZzZ.

I'll do a research on the eibach's and trd's to see which ones fit the bill. cheers.

By the way, those rims look great on your car!

Did you have OEM wheels on beforehand? If so, have you noticed much difference moving over to the 17s? I ask because I had 17s on mine when I got it from the dealer, so I am interested in the observations of someone who had stock rims and tires and switched over to 17s on how the handling has changed, performance differences and also what kind of effect they have had on the fuel economy...

Cheers! M2

TRDs are a mild drop with good ride quality, IMO.

They are 15x6 EM7s with Toyota centers and a +39mm offset. The tire is a 205/55 ContiExtremeContact.

Just thought I would share, here is one of the place selling TRD sparing for descent price.
http://www.trdsparks.com/displayparts.php?Mdl_dtl=712&Part_cat=11&parts_id=1136

Eibach spring is a very good option also, it is widely used for many car manufacturer as an accessory option.

Yeah, trdsparks get very decent price for the TRD spring. Just the shipping for USPS is around USD $110, which is a bit too expensive. That's why I got mine from Treyz.

Mines a sedan which has been heavily loaded several times for long trips.

My TRD springs (red) which were spec'ed at 1.25" drop are now closer to 1.5" drop after nearly two years and ~50,000 kilometers of pure enjoyment. No regrets.

....or need a camber kit....
BTW, I had the alignment checked a couple of weeks after in the install, and it was spot on....camber and toe were perfect. You'll certainly not need a camber kit....unless you want more camber. I was able to get -0.9 degrees when I put everything back together...and that's enough for me.

Thanks! The wheels are Enkei CDR9's. I did have the standard OEM wheels before but note that I only had the car for a week when I upgraded the rims/tires. With the 17's they feel a bit lighter to me, much better in corners and grip is excellent.. although road noise has increased a little bit. Fuel efficiency? not really sure as I've only had the car for a short time.

Your car looks hot Billiam. I'm now leaning more towards the Eibach's (1" max) though as I don't want to end up ploughing snow in the winter, lol. Apparently the Eibach also has more of a cushion/comfort feel (and drop appears "milder") compared to TRD's stiffer ride.

The pic below really shows the difference between stock and lowered... really have to get mine done. I though about ordering from tirerack.com, drop ship them somewhere in Buffalo then drive across the border to pick them up.

Thanks a lot to a couple of members who responded to my PM's questions about the springs and installations (GrimlockGT, thebarber, toad) and to those who shared their own experiences on this board

I'll have the Eibach set this weekend and plan to install them on Sunday. I've gathered all the tools I'm going to need and hopefully did not miss anything else..

You guys have got to be the friendliest and most helpful bunch of members I've ever come accross in any forums -- thank you all so much.

I did the Eibach prokit springs today and everything went exceptionally well. I just followed all the DIY instructions very carefully, made notes of all the tips you shared, and pretty much just took my time. I started around 9am and finshed it all by 2pm. It sure does pay to have the proper tools (the torque wrench was a saviour, some bolts just would not budge at all!).

Once everything was wrapped up I took the car for a looooong test drive (). I thought the ride quality improved immensely and it was even better than I expected. It was a mild drop (1" all around) and the comfort level of the spring were smooth, very stable and at the same time also very tight when taking corners.

Here are some pictures of what took place today on my driveway. Sorry about the pics quality they were taken with an iPhone.

It was a fun, productive day and it felt so rewarding when everything was completed

Before (note that nasty gap between the tire and wheel well):

Koodos to you for taking this on. It sounds like a daunting task, but research, support, patience, and most importantly proper tools can tackle most anything.

Side note: I discovered yesterday that loaded with three bikes, wife and daughter that I have a rub occuring on my rear right. Guess I'm now gonna have to look at introducing some camber back there.

great job! sounds corny, but the best part of all(besides getting rid of that gap) is knowing you did the work yourself! the spring swap was the first thing i did to any of my cars(besides oil changes/tuneups) and i was TERRIFIED at first. i put it off for months until one day i was thinking 'screw it...i'm doing this!'(literally, the springs sat in a box in our guest bedroom for 4 months).

now i understand more how my car actually works and i'm confident i can handle anything else that i might decide to do(ok, maybe not a supercharger install.....). car looks great and can't wait to see more pics!

I agree with Adam....you want to dial in as much negative camber as you can. If you try real hard you can get in the -0.8 to -1.0 range. I managed -0.9 degrees. Or you could just ask the alignment shop to adjust it when you get it checked.

I agree, and I was overwhelmed at first that's why I started this thread under the Canada section for this reason -- to find a place or individual who can lower my car. But after reading the forum and got several advise from you great folks here I decided to do it myself :)

Some of you might find this a bit strange.. but I actually had fun doing the swap. It was labour intensive and very time consuming (especially the spring removal part) but overall it was a very rewarding and fun experience. In fact I can't wait to change my own oil, or perhaps install a rear sway bar, etc. hahaha.

Anyway at this point my quest for a mild drop is finally over

You noticed  I've had those plates ever since I got them on my 91" Accord EXR, then they went on my '95 Accord EX then now on my Yaris

As far as the looks, I didn't expect the subtle changes I made could make such a huge difference. For example, IMO it is much cleaner once I removed the dealer installed side mouldings and hood deflector, and after I debadged the car. It also appears wider ever since I dropped it by only an inch.

All the mods I've done so far had made a positive impact including the recent tint on the windows. I even installed an armrest today and man, do I feel more relaxed while driving.

Your car looks great!! Get some yellow fogs. The lenses would look good against the color of your car!

BTW, you'll be better off buying the bezels from your local dealer regardless of what foglamp you go with. There just aren't any "kits" that have the right bezels for us. I came across one ebay kit, but then read that the fitment for the bezel was terrible.

I ended up buying the bezels from my local dealer and a yellow ebay foglamp kit. Doesn't really matter which year or body style you get, as the actual lamps are the same. In fact, my kit is for an "07 sedan".

Here are the part numbers for the OE bezels.

Left side = #81482-52260
Right side = #81481-52330

Perfect fit.

Thanks for the tip and the part numbers. I think the yellows on your absolutely red looks hot

I think initially I'll stick with the "smoked" theme since I got the windows tinted. However, I think once the wiring (harness, relays, etc.) are installed the lamps seem easy enough to swap so there really is no reason to NOT have 2 sets of them, lol.

Oh yes...once the wiring is in place, you can plug-and-play what ever lamp you want. I just wish someone made a decent bezel for the '09+ Hatch...but nothing yet. The dealer is our best option.

Tons of options on ebay. Here's an example of a smoked lamp. ---> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-2007-TOYOTA-YARIS-S-4DR-SMOKE-FOGLIGHTS-FOG-LIGHTS-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQfitsZModelQ3aYarisQQhashZitem58 87d61d5bQQitemZ380236078427QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTru ckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

. Thanks, you really should go for it. It wasn't hard at all as long as you have the right tools (http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac316/mywebshare44/2010%20Toyota%20Yaris/tools.jpg).

I was going to go with TRDs but I was really looking for the least amount of drop. It turned out the drop is actually almost 1.5" (measured fender to center of wheels, 15" before and now down to ~13.5").

I'm quite happy with it lowered, stance and the ride feel. I doubt I'll have rubbing issues since there's still quite a bit of clearance left between my fender and wheels plus my rims are ET +40. In fact I went with my 3 coworkers for lunch last week (ave. weight is 170lbs/person) and still had room between the fenders/tires.

Anyway, today turned out to be another beautiful afternoon in the city. And while browsing through the forums I came accross this meteorite (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=475634&postcount=49) metallic yarii. So I thought I got some free time... why not give it a shot? So I took a trip down to my local HD to pickup weatherstripping and spent about 2 hours on the car this afternoon. Initially I thought it would look cheap but on the contrary it does NOT look 'ghetto' at all.

Here's what I got and I think I will be keeping it for a little while :)

As far as the looks, I didn't expect the subtle changes I made could make such a huge difference. For example, IMO it is much cleaner once I removed the dealer installed side mouldings and hood deflector, and after I debadged the car. It also appears wider ever since I dropped it by only an inch.

Next are some fogs and a rear sway bar then I can say I'm done!

I like the hood deflector. I think the Yaris looks more, dare I say, sporty with it. I also noticed that mine now looks wider too since I dropped it and added 17" wheels.

I got my fog lights from MI and bought the factory bezels from Toyota. They cost almost as much as the fog light kit. :iono:

Really? How much did you pay? I think I paid $16 per pop. $32 for a perfect fit is worth it to me though. The pic I saw of the one aftermarket '09+ HB bezel that's available looked awful...with gaps along the top.

$32 for bezels + $39 for fogs = $71 total....not bad IMO.

I'm embarrassed to say, but each bezel cost me $41 CDN.

If you think that is bad, I was hoping to get the TRD 18" wheels and the dealer quoted me $562 per wheel. I was expecting around $300 per wheel which would have been bad enough.

Hmm.. why the difference in pricing and how did you get them so cheap?

Normally dealerships charge an arm and a leg.. I would've expected to pay like GrimlockGT for a pair of those shrouds. :iono:

i had the shifter extension

w/o the nst short shifter, you'll hate it....hard to get into 2nd and 4th

i also hated the nst short shift kit as it never felt like it was getting into gear

oem ftw

for the hood seal, just go back to home depot and get some foam and double sided tape

Actually i have an A/T (wife didn't want manual). I wanted an additional 2" shifter height extension for ergonomics because of the armrest I recently installed (shift knob now is too low to rest hand on and wanted to raise it up a bit).

Perhaps I need a taller shift knob instead lol.

I'll check out HD again for some rubber/foam weatherstripping, thanks for the tip.

When you do, this is the stuff you want. It's ultra soft and flexible as heck, like a memory foam almost.

It should withstand any climate, they're heavy duty and meant to go under your garage door bottom, lol.

Thank you very much. Your post was VERY helpful with the SKU and all mentioned. I went this afternoon and picked up the exact item you mentioned. Is there any write-up somewhere on YW on a easy install procedure, as I really like how yours turned out and would like mine to look the same.

A member posted a pic on this thread (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12685&page=3) who also owns a meteorite and gave me the idea, so off I go and I searched this site and everywhere for this infamous "home depot" front lip . They are out there on audis, G35s, subarus, hondas, toyotas etc. I even found a Civic thread (http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/exterior-style-mods/176869-diy-home-depot-front-lip.html) dedicated with 30+ pages on this, some looked pretty cool/decent and are tastefully done, but others the others not so much lol.

You might notice other peoples HD lip look sort of flared out a bit more compared to mine which is less 'aggressive'. Just make sure to do it when it's nice and warm outside for better adhesion to the bumper and surfaces are clean. Here's a good tutorial (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11792) you can try but I did not do the zip ties.

Good luck :)

Well I did the custom lip install last night. I removed the front bumper to make it easier. I also had to do a couple of other things anyways since I bought Toyota OEM foglight shrouds since the ones from MI had not so perfect fitment. I also put on a couple deer whistlers in behind since I've come way too close, living out on the boonies. Back to the main topic, mine didn't turn out HALF as well as yours. I couldn't figure out which direction to put it in so ended up cutting the stripping down the centre and well I'm just not happy with it whatsoever. I'll leave it there for now but if it falls off I won't be overly disappointed. LOL

Hey there, sorry to hear the HD lip install did not turn out well

I must’ve lucked out since I managed to get it on the 1st attempt. By the way, what part of ontario are you located at?

Here's a quick diagram of the lip and which direction I mounted it on mine:

You've done a nice job with that HD lip there toy.

Now can I get you to satisfy my morbid sense of curiousity? Take some of your leftover door seal, and see if it can be affixed to the underside of the rocker panels.

Unfortunately since I only had a couple of small pieces left from the job they have long been discarded… However though, I think you might be onto something here. Hmmm.

Thanks Toy. Your diagrams are extremely helpful with all the detail and specs BTW. In fact, I see now where I messed up. I cut off the discarded the section that you would have stuck to the bumper. That very small thin lip on the bottom of the other piece is what I attached to the bumper. By cutting my seal in half you can clearly see where my cuts were made and it's not such a pretty picture. I will roll with it for now and may tackle it again down the road properly.

I'm in located in Scotland, south-west of Brantford.

I live in Ajax (east of GTA).
