Almost exactly 4 years from the date of purchase .

I bought my Yaris in May 2006 , and my battery just died yesterday while attending the Shaw AFB airshow .

Although a car battery's life span is dependant on a few variables, a 4 year battery life is about averags.

I usually replace a battery when it get to be 4 years old or so because experience has told me that its days are numbered at that point.
I do a lot of night driving and the last thing I need is to get into my car at 2:00am and have a dead battery.

Mine died shortly after 2 years of age.

My fault tho, I accidentally ran it dry a couple of times (radio on while detailing)

4 years is outstanding for a standard car battery!

For those that still have stock battery . Here are some of the warning signs that your battery is going to die soon . At least these are some of the thing I noticed .

1. Your car takes a couple of extra seconds to crank .
2. Your car will NOT continue to crank if you release the key .
3. Your headlights dim when u go into nuetral .

Its odd. Before the show my GF asked what took Coryn so long to crank ? I replied " She is gonna need a new battery soon" . Sure enough , 5 hours later I'm pushing Coryn so my GF could perform a "roll crank" in second gear .

The last time I replaced a battery was for my old car (Pontiac Sunfire,1996) in early 2000. I got around four years of life with the original GM battery. I replaced it with a heavy duty battery. Sold that car in December 2009... the battery was still fine.

I'm shooting for 4 years. After that, I'll replace it with a heavy duty battery and hope it lasts for 10 years? I live in PA and the Winters can get a bit rough at times!

My stock battery has a set of indicators on it.
Does anyone know if they actually can predict things.
One is needs water and the other one is need a charge.
Mine is just three years this month.

Now I did have a bad experience with one in my old Escort. Must have been low on water and gassing. Went to start it and it must have sparked between the plates. Yes it exploded splattering acid all over the place.

Our Yaris was purchased May 2006 and has 93k miles on it. Stock battery still provides plenty of juice. I even run the radio for an hour every work day during lunch.

I had 6 years on an optima blue top once... and it was still doing awesome... course I also had a 160amp alternator.... that battery rested at 13.4volts (car turned off) I think the main thing that determines how long a car bat will last is how much electrical strain the driver puts on the battery... Sure I had 2000watts of stereo... but I babied that battery... let it recharged before and after running my stereo... make sure I never turned the car off with the batt not fully charged.

Got 2.5years/47,000 mile on the stock bat right now... no intentions of replacing it any time soon.

How do one go about adding distilled water to the stock battery? There's quite a few plastic screws on the top, does it matter which one I put water into? Or do I have to put it into all of them?

I have a 2007 Yaris coupe and I am now experiencing a really slooooowww crank, then it starts. I tried to see if the lights dimmed in neutral, partially turned the key, but nothing different happened. Half turn still starts the car and completes the ignition, it's just that it is chugging slowly to start? I can think of only three things: battery, alternator, or starter motor as the problems. I have 67k would the alt and the starter still be covered under warranty? I mean, 3 yrs and the alt or starter goes?

I have a 2007 Yaris coupe

:iono:

I would take the car to a certified shop to have them deep test your battery and also your starter components. They will be able to tell you for sure...you could lean toward battery replacement, but best to be sure.

probably the battery, but you can go to a shop and get that checked for free.

My buddy's 04 Echo is still on its original battery, shows no sign of fading. More often than not, the charging system is going to do more damage than anything else by under- or over-charging the battery.

I got 3 years and it died. Been cranking fine then I stopped at gas station and it wouldn't start back up. Had to push start it myself. At least this car is not too heavy to push for one person. 3 years is normal in Florida with the heat

All I can Say is my battery lasted around 30 months, but it may be because of the sound I have.....

It went this winter past, (may, June, July in SA)

Batteries tend to die in either cold or hot conditions when the life span is over,
when there are what seem like electrical issues like weak ignition and poor starting, then look at the battery, I would recomend replacing with a sealed calsium battery as well.

I just replaced mine at 2 years 10 months. To add insult to injury Toyota put in a battery that was 7.75" tall. All standard G35 batteries here are 8" tall. I had to hack saw the rear hook off the battery hold down and braze it back on .25" lower. First incidence of Jap-Crap engineering I've run into except for the obvious tachometer and rear seat rip-offs.

I've had my Yaris since February 2009 and the battery is still working fine.

As for other cars I've owned, I had a Ford Escort LX that went 5 years on the factory battery. I also had a Ford Escort GT that gave me around 4 years. My Hyundai Accent from 2003, I only got around 2 years, but found out from a newsgroup posting that there were many 2003 Hyundais with premature battery failures because they used a cheaper supplier.

The most I ever got out of a battery, and it wasn't a factory battery, was around 7 years. Can't remember what brand it was, but wish I could find another one of those.

My car was built in Jan 07. Assuming they put the battery in at that time, it's coming up to 4 years. Last week I got it tested, still ok @ 385 CCA.

I just had to replace my OEM maintenance free battery. It lasted 4 years and 2 months from the date I bought the car new. There were some signs over the past few months that it might have been on its way out. I never had any issues, but my wife commented a couple times over the summer that the car seemed a little slower to start than normal. I should have thought to look into it but, frankly, I'm used to batteries lasting more than 4 years and since it hadn't shown me any signs of problems I basically ignored her...er, I mean it.

We got up to go to church one morning and the accessory lights would come on, but it just made a pulsating clicking like noise and would not start. Turned on the lights and they would quickly dim. The case of the battery was translucent with lines for Upper Level and Lower Level of the electrolyte. So, I put my trouble light up next to it and could see that the level was down about an inch below the Lower Level and it kind of looked like the upper half of the plates were exposed. I imagine that's a bad sign. Had I checked it out over the summer when my wife alerted me to a possible problem I might have been able to remove those plugs and topped it up and maybe gotten some more life out of it. Or, maybe it would have blown up and killed me, I don't know. :iono: (Or, maybe the wife had secretly taken the plugs out and removed some electrolyte so I would do just that. Hmmmmmm...)

I was going to get a Kirkland Signature for $60 at Costco, but they didn't have one. The manager told me that he had been having trouble keeping his battery stock up and couldn't venture a guess as to when he might have one in stock. Go figure.

Sams Club had a Energizer with the same specs, same warranty for $67 "installed." The thing is, I've noticed that Sam's changes sources and brands somewhat frequently and this concerns me a bit if I needed to have it replaced under the 36 mo free exchange warranty. Also, there is little info out there on Energizer, other than it's made by JCI. Johnson makes batteries sold under several brands, but the fact that they build them doesn't necessarily mean that every brand is built with the same quality components. Furthermore, Sam's is associated with Walmart and there are some pretty negative reports out there about Walmart's warranty service. Thus, I decided to forgo Sam's.

Ended up going with the Autozone Duralast Gold. It was $99 and the features/specs sound very similar to those of the AC Delco Professional. I think it might be a better battery than the Kirkland. There are Autozone's all over the place, so I think I can be confident of good warranty service. Also, the guys at Autozone were kind enough to run it over to my house (just a few miles away) because I only have 1 car and was stuck with a dead battery.

I did find that the battery is a tad taller than the OEM was, so I had to take some nylon wire ties and lash the rear hold down post together. The front post fits fine, no cobbling needed.

Oh--the Duralast is a model 35-DLG and this battery has (+) left, so it drops right in and you don't have to worry about your cabling. It mounts right up.

The Costco I shop here in Florida stopped carrying Kirkland batteries and now carry Interstate brand. I had to get one recently and it, too, was just slightly taller than stock.

Batteries last around 4.5 to 5 years sometimes a little more. I learned a long time ago the biggest killer to car batteries is your aftermarket radio. I don't use amps or anything but all the cars in the past have died within 3-4 years of installing an aftermarket radio. Its not so much the wattage but the quantity of speakers and the standby power consumption. The echo I have is 10 yrs old and the guy replaced the original battery 1 yr before I bought the car off him in september but it only had 100k miles on it.

Bought the car in January '08. A little over three years ago, not bad I guess.

Like Ex-Rrrr my 2007 hatchback original Japanese battery has just had to be replaced after 9 years! I had some strange electrical problems for a few months before such as radio and clock losing settings overnight but no signs of a weak battery until one day it failed to start. Mostly local city driving in Canada - just hope the Walmart replacement will last half as long.

I just bought a 2008 5dr LB last month, after reading this post, I went out to check under the hood, surprise surprise, the "made in Japan" battery sitting there looking pretty!

Still going strong, the true test will be this winter's cold mornings.

Same with the 2004 Echo I previously had, here in Toronto. The battery lasted about 9 years and I started losing radio presets, until it died a few months later. I was wondering if my radio had a developed a grounding fault or something. LOL

After reading various posts/threads here, all Yaris/Echo owners have had good experience with the OEM batteries (Panasonic & FB) and since we can't find them here in NA, may be we can start a Group Buy and import a pallet full in a slow boat :laugh:for members!

I'm no expert in import/export, may be members with knowledge can voice their opinions whether this is doable?

My 07 hatch battery lasted about 8 years, it went out last year and I replaced it with the Interstate 51R battery from Costco for $55.

I tried to maintain it by adding distilled water and for some reason it weakened the battery somehow. I then added epsom salt to it as I saw in some Youtube videos and it got a little better before I my car to Las Vegas for a trip where the heat finished it off.
