Greetings!

Can someone please tell me how to connect the audio controls on the steering wheel with the radio. Radio/ CD are from 2002, and the wheel controls are from 2003.

The attached PDF shows the connections of the steering wheel controls for 2002-2003. Hopefully this will be of some help.

Today i tried to connect the radio control using this schematic but it didnt work.
Do you have any other schematics that would work?
Model: W53805 PANASONIC - RADIO/CD
Controls: W5800 MATSUSHITA

That's all I have. The documentation doesn't say which radios do/don't support the steering wheel controls.

Hello All,

I know it's old thread, but I have a question related to it. I noticed that there are two versions of part under stearing wheel called CABLE SUB-ASSY, SPIRAL or steering wheel hairspring (84306) and one of them (84306‑0D050) supports STEERING AUDIO SWITCH and other (84306‑0D012) not.

Are there other elements that determine is it possible to use STEERING AUDIO SWITCH?

(Sorry for CAPS names of the parts - took them from parts catalog and not sure are there other names for them)

Yes. The spiral cable ideally has more wires in it when the steering wheel controls are present, so the difference between those two part numbers is likely the presence of those extra wires.

I already know about that (mentioned that as an opening to my post  and because I think that could be the reason why levvy coundn't make his switch work with radio).
I was asking "Are there other elements that determine is it possible to use STEERING AUDIO SWITCH?", because as I looked in parts catalog and service manual, I couldn't find any other parts associated with audio that had 2 versions (with SW support and without).

The only other thing that I am aware of, from researching it for the 2nd gen Yaris, is the different airbag cover. For the second gen, the Yaris without steering wheel controls have an airbag cover that is larger and that covers the space where the plastic piece with the switches would sit.

That's interesting. Does it mean there were no controls after 2003, or just there were other airbag covers?

UPDATE!!!
By 2nd gen you mean Yaris II 2006-, or Yaris I after facelifting?

For the 2006 to 2011 version there were airbag controls in some markets (Europe and Asia), but not in others (US). Even in the markets where on some models of the Yaris it had steering wheels controls there was a second airbag cover. The airbag squib is the same, but the cover is riveted to the squib frame, so switching to steering wheel controls meant switching the airbag.

Thx for info. Happily my Yaris is from 2003 (as in topic of this thread).

Noob question - what is the purpose/function of the spiral cable (haven't took out steering wheel yet to look at it)? I'm an engineer, not car mechanic...

The spiral cable creates a flexible connection between the steering column and the devices on the rotating steering wheel (airbag, audio controls, cruise controls, etc). It is a coiled ribbon cable with a mechanism to allow it to coil and uncoil some number of rotations in either direction.

I just noticed what you mean with the 2003 airbag cover. It appears that the audio controls were mounted to the steering wheel itself as opposed to on top. In the EPC it shows different steering wheel assemblies for audio/no audio and just a single part number for the airbag assembly.

Is there any way to install a 2006 wheel and airbag with steering wheel controls to the 2002 yaris? After all you say the squib is the same?

The squib is the same for a steering wheel control equipped and a non equipped of the same generation from the same area.

The first gen only has one squib for the driver's airbag, where as the second gen has two, and the first and second gen have different connectors.

The Japanese 2nd gen airbag though just has one squib, so you could theoretically use a second gen Japanese steering wheel with the audio controls, but I have no idea if it would actually fit and if the spiral cable from the 2nd gen would work on the 1st gen.
