View Full Version : So it's snowing... and well... I crashed a little. :(

Well... I live on Vancouver Island and we don't get much snow. So I'm driving to my gf's work and it's along a snowy road that hasn't been driven on yet and there's new snow on it.

I'm doing a cautious thirty (maybe a bit less) and I go around a fairly wide bend when I start to drift ever so slightly... Being the frightened noob I was I started pumping my breaks a bit and turning the car sharper into the direction of the bend, to steer away from the oncoming, high curb.

Sure enough I rammed into the curb with a crunch.

The damage?

Fortunatly it was all on the wheel... At the point of impact I saw the silver hubcap launch about 6 to 8 feet and land on the lawn. The ghetto looking wheel is now exposed and there is is some bending along the lips of it where the hubcap attaches to it.

The hubcap is fractured and broken, too.

Even though the warranty doesn't cover this... How much will this repair set me back? The wheel is fine - I kept on driving afterwards... Theres just quite a bit of bending underneath the hubcap, on the wheel.

you'll probly have to get a new steely, they are cheap. The hubcap, not sure.

Hummm... :(

How much do you think that would cost? Like 200ish Canadian?

Anyone else drove in the snow with their Yaris yet? I was wondering how they handled...

It's not so much the hubcap I'm worried about... It's more the wheel frame...

In fact, take a look yourself...

Hopefully the tire isn't slowly deflating, either.

Ya I would make sure it wont puncture the tire or you have an air loss because it's not sealing right. I would take the tire off the wheel and try to bang it back into submission :headbang:

just drove today. no problem except for coming back up this small hill to my carport in the back alley. too much snow under my car and my car has been lowered too, not enough weight on the front to push the wheels down so i was kinda left hanging till my bro and dad came out to scoop sum snow from underneath and to give me a small push!

Bad luck - Better check the alignment too.

yeah i've seen some snow
pic was taken Friday the 13th, oct 2006

The car handles fine in the snow for cheap ass tires and such a light car it's better then many 4x4 or other short wheel base cars/trucks/SUV's.
ABS is a a great idea for anyone looking to buy that will be driving in snow.
it gets pitched around a bit in slush but for snow and Ice I give it a 3 out of 5

We get quite a bit of snow here. When my Yaris comes in, I'm having the TRD sport shocks installed and new Nokian WR all-weather tires (195-55R-15) put on. I also ordered the car with ABS.

I"m guessing that the combo should make the car handle quite a bit better in the nasty weather.

Bad luck - Better check the alignment too.

I was going a bit under 30k/m and then I drove around for a bit... Hopefully it's not off. Is there anything I should notice if it is off, event slightly? Like slight veering to one side, maybe? Or buckling noises while driving?

Gawd I hope it's not that bad...

A liitle off will make your tires wear unevenly and cost you more in the long run than an alignment.

Hmmm, this is true.

Well, maybe I'll just repair it under the radar and then if anything happens... I'll have my 7 year warranty. :D

take the car for a drive on the highway, at highway speeds.

exactly, high speed driving will be the only way youll notice. I drove my malibu into a concrete guardrail at about 40km/h and it never drove the same afterward, it would track straight but at high speed you could notice it off balance and the tires would always only last at max a year before they wouldnt balance. That is probably worst case. From what Ive seen on the news though you wont have much of a chance to do some highway testing....
BTW the Yaris has actually been one of the better cars Ive had to drive in the winter.

i had to put my stock rims/tires back.
i'm very impressed how yaris handle on snow with stock tires..
it was really fun driving on heavy snow.

and for the damage rim, i would try to hammer the bent lip..
good thing about steely it can be repaired by hammering..
and new steely should be around 50~80 CAD from toyota dealer

Same thing happened to one of my wheels.

I posted a WTB that had a good response:

WTB: 15" steely and hub cap (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2322)

Skip MrMondayNite's offer (Thanks Chris).

Good luck...

You have a couple options. Walmart $54ish or Toyota $84ish.

I doubt the alignment is off, if you're on a 3 lane highway, take the middle lane at high speeds and it should track true. Also, there shouldn't be any noticeable vibration or unusual tire noise.

I've already banged up my wheel badly in two occasion. One time I was slowing down on the left turn lane while coming to a stop and went up the curb cause I was paying more attention to my blackberry while the car drifted into the curb. The left wheels hit the curb at about 40 km/hr in the dry, but the tires took the impact and the car simply went up the curb, but it still was a very hard hit and the rims got scuffed slightly. luckily, the hub caps didn't take the hit.

The other incident was even more dramatic, taking a very fast U-turn, misjudged and the front right wheel hit hard against the curb while fully cranked (another inch and I would have made it). My rim looks almost as bad as yours from scrapping against the curb and small chunk of the hubcap got torn out. Anyways, after all the abuse, the car still tracks true on the highway at 180km/hr, so I'm not concerned. However, my front-right hubcaps is a big mess from constantly smacking it against the curb.

If anyone is in the GTA area and wants to get rid of their hub caps, let me know, cause I'm going through mine fairly quickly.
