I finally decided to put gas in the Yaris for the first time, and it got around 37-38 MPG, depending on when it was filled between 0 to 10 miles, and how full the dealer got it. That's a month of in-town driving 3-6 miles at a time, including some break-in zoomyness, and about 25% highway miles today at 50MPH, plus I drove a very twisty mountain road about 15MPH from 4000-6700 feet elevation with more than a dozen stops on the way up and engine braking all the way back down. With so much uncharacteristically wasteful driving on the first tank, this should be the worst MPG my Yaris ever gets...

the Engine braking was probably good for your mileage. You probably didn't use any gas the whole way down due to the DFCO feature. Some of my best tanks the first year I had my car were from driving on steep roads. Sure going up killed mileage, but coming back down I seemed to have made up for it. My first tank was 36mpg... that was in 20F weather with non-ethanol, but oxygenated gas.

The road up Mauna Loa has a fairly shallow slope and is very twisty with hairpins, so I was working the clutch and brake a lot. There's also a tiny bit less oxygen up there.

Where I really gain MPG is on the main highway up and down Kilauea, which has just the right slope for many miles of coasting on the descent. It also helps that (mature) people don't mind going 5-10 MPH under the speed limit here. ;) In road-raging Colorado I would have been run off the road. I've been able to get 45 MPG in the FX-16 on a double round trip up and down Kilauea, which is better MPG than on flat land.

I just filled up after my first tank yesterday. I drove 384.5 miles using 10.3 gallons of gas, which is about 37.3 MPG total. I had a mix of driving, with about 70/30 highway:city driving and plenty of hills, and with some stop-and-go traffic. I'm also changing my speeds frequently to break in the engine according to the manual, so sometimes on the highway I'll go down to 50mph and then I'll slowly accelerate to above 70mph. I imagine I'll probably be averaging in the 40+ mpg range long term, which I'd be quite happy with.

hard to go by the dealer fill . Not known if under / over filled . Our 1st tank in the '08 auto sedan netted us close to 44 . My guess is that it was overfilled . I always stop the fillup at 1st click of nozzle at high flow of the pump . Came close to the 1st fill a few times since .

Second tank was 35.9 MPG, but I had a fair amount of heavy traffic and some air conditioning use mixed in, so all in all that's not so bad I think.

My second tank got combined 41MPG, with 75% highway (50mph) with gusty winds, and 25% short 2-6 mile town trips. I suspect the town portion sucked down more than its fractional share of the gas, but if I ignore that suspicion and just apply simple algebra to the two fillups I get 36 MPG town and 43 MPG highway. I suspect in reality the former is a little less and the latter a little more. I could get up to 45 MPG on that highway trip with the old corolla, and it looks like the Yaris is identical. I was surprised to notice on the long trip that the Yaris does not coast quite as far or as fast downslope as the old corolla did. 50MPG seems like it will be more difficult than I anticipated.

The old Corolla most likely didn't have DFCO. When the car's coasting with the fuel completely shut off, the engine drags the car down faster than when it's got idle fuel flowing.

coasting == neutral The downhill slopes on this particular highway are shallow enough that I need to keep every iota of momentum, and then give it a bump of gas on the flat spots every few miles.

To be fair I got 45 MPG in the corolla back when I briefly got stuck with a ricer "high-flow" muffler. More like 43 before and after. The winds can be pretty hellish on that road.

I do think a steeper climb might yield greater MPG round-trip.

Topped off my dealer fill, then drove 1/2 a tank...filled up again

39.4 mpg - 90% highway

not bad for a start! Tried a little DFCO, etc...mostly just driving a bit slower at 65-70!

i just measured my first tank. it was mostly highway and the ac was on 100% of the time. it came to 38.55. i'm very pleased and i think the next tank will be even better because about 3/4 through the tank i finally checked my air pressure. the tires were anywhere from 25 to 30 psi. i pumped them up to 42 and also switched to mobil 1 5w30. i hope to get over 40 now. these cars are amazing for mpg.

A bit different combo on fillup #3 - 60 miles of 3-5 mile trips, then a 110 mile highway (50MPH) trip. Some strong head/crosswinds on the return leg, but much of that while downhill coasting. 43.6 MPG. I must have been over 45 MPG on the highway. <geek>Now I need to find a least-squares program to help me break down the town/highway components. </geek> That's probably my final MPG update post in this thread.

I picked up my new Yaris last night & took a trip today. LOTS of VERY twisty mountain roads, including several ~15 mile stretches never out of 3rd or 2nd gear.

My first gas up showed that I got 44.2 mpg. It's brand new too so it's not broken in yet.

Figured I'm doing a good job of breaking in the engine with all the ups & downs, accell & decell.

Congrats Robert! :clap: I love mountains too...

The Dealer (first) Fill... I only got 27 MPG. Then my actual first fill... I got 35 MPG. Now I'm into the upper 40's and lower 50's consistantly. I use a lot of fuel efficient (FE) techniques to better mileage... common sense driving. :smile:

You're getting over 40 MPG... you must drive very consciously and with many FE techniques?

I thought there really isn't a break in period anymore for 'new' car engines? You don't have to follow driving a certain way for a specific period of time... like in the 70's and into the 80's?

What am I doing wrong my average is only 32 mpg and I'm about 50/50 city/hw. I don't have a lead foot, buy maybe a steel toe. I'm new to the a/t thing and the Yaris likes to jump when I feather the throttle.

EDIT: us gallons, not sure of difference between us gal and imperial gal
