OK so my car is just over 4 years old now, and I am noticing that on my rocker panels the paint is worn down to the white undercoat (at least I think that's what it is) just infront of the rear tires, as well as right behind the mud guards on the front wheels. At one point it has gone down to bare metal and rust is starting to form.

My question is, what can I do to prevent this and stop the spread of this rust? I don't want to have to repaint my whole car anytime soon, but I've heard of 3M transparent vinyl or something that can be placed on these parts to prevent damage to paint, etc.

I will take some pics of this later today.

You'll have to repaint first but them do a search for Paint Protection Film, there are a few different brands but they all do esentially the same thing. I would wait about 30 days after repainting to make sure the paint is fully cured before applying the film.

Hmm... where would one go to get just the underside rocker panels painted? Or could I do that myself? It's only one spot that has started to rust, you can't see it so I would have no problem sanding that myself and respraying it or something.

I had the same thing happen, but before rust set in, I sprayed rubberized undercoating in there.

I would just paint it yourself,I got some matching paint in an aerosol can from Expresspaint.com. you can get a metal etch primer and clear from them too.
