Hi I'm brand new here.
I have a Garmin GPS system and now the placement is posing a problem. I do not like the window mount so I purchased an on dash unit, which I was placing on the center of the dash. With the Yaris console being dead center of the dash, this poses a problem. Would you know if there is any law preventing me from placing the GPS system on the dash directly in front of the steering wheel? There seems to be plenty of room. If not, the other option is on the ledge in front of the console which will obscure parts of the console. The third option is to use a map. :iono:

Personally I prefer mounting it on the left side of the windshield....keeps it out of the way...but that's just me.

That said...I see no reason what-so-ever why you couldn't place your GPS in that location. Given the Yaris' center IP I'm sure you wouldn't be the first person to put something there.

I positioned mine in the upper left on the window, i agree this keeps it out of the way, yet i can still look at it without it taking my eyes at all off the road. As far as I know, there is nothing against having your gps in front of yoru steering wheel in MD.

With the window mount, you can put it in the left cup holder... otherwise, I gave up on the windshield mount, and just left the GPS on the floor, lifting it up whenever I needed directions.

I love the GPS behind the steering wheel! This is my 4.3" Garmin Nuvi:

I love the GPS behind the steering wheel!

I have to try that with mine!

I usually mount mine on the window just to the right of the center gauges. Our cars aren't very wide and it is still easy to reach and out of my view when driving. (and passengers can see it too)

Try mounting the GPS in or on the visor . Its stealthy and when you need it just flip down .

Thank you for some good ideas.
I like the behind the steering wheel and on the visor ideas.
For me, to the right of the console might be too far. I have enough of a problem seeing the fuel gage to the far right.
The unit might also fit in my pocket (nuvi 350) as long as the voice is loud enough. What I use now is a beanbag unit that sits on the dash and is sort of bulky. It works much better than the window mount and never falls over.

I mounted mine on the steering column just like BuildCode did, it's gets great reception and is easy to glance at. That location is highly recommended, and completely legal, it doesn't block your view at all. The only problem it poses is with the power cord, it's a little complicated to keep it completely out of the way, but it is possible.

Last year I had my Garmin mounted behind the wheel too. Loved it but got rid of it in December after getting my Moto Droid which is a far more advanced GPS system.

Here's how I have my GPS (I've replaced that old StreetPilot with a Nuvi):

I have the power cable come in from the glovebox. There's a small gap b/w the glovebox and dash when the glovebox is closed and the GPS power cable fits in there perfectly. The glovebox door still closes w/ the power cable going through that gap.

I use that big round mounting disc on the far right side of the instrument cluster, if i'm not using the power cable i''ll stick it to the window above the rearview mirror.

Yes. It's a "Dashtopper" brand dashboard cover.

Mounted my tomtom just under the rearview mirror on the windshield. Couldn't mount it on top of my steering wheel as I have my scangauge there and have my XM receiver mounted on the left side of the windshield.

I like mounting my GPS on that little window on the driver's door. My Scangauge is just above the steering wheel. And of course there's my ashtray.

Damn you, rick996! I just scrolled through 15 posts, thinking to myself, "Oh, I'll tell him about how I stick it to the little window on the door!"

Way to steal my thunder!

Just kidding, I think that it's a great place to put it. Out of the way, but as easy to look at as it is to look in your side mirrors!

Must be that whole "Great minds think alike!" thing going on!

Hey jpmck03,
It's funny that this thread is been around for eight months and the both of us decide to post the same thing. My excuse is that I am new and just read this thread a couple days ago.

Thought I would post my question in here.. rather then start a new thread.

What's everyone's opinion on what the best GPS is and or best suited to the Yaris I guess?
I noticed that a lot of users here all seem to have a Garmin's?

I am in the market for a new GPS, something good and reliable and just want some opinions on what would be the best one to look at getting. What's the better brand, Garmin, Navman or tomtom?

Anyone... at all?

I like that spot, and possibly building something to go into the cupholder
up there. My only worry is what happens when the pillar air bag goes off,
where will that end up?

I have mine at the top left side of the windshield no problems really seeing with it there ... I have the little disk attached to the upper left hand side of the dash so I have an option as to where to stick it.

The only problem that i seem to have is when its really cold outside the suction cup wont stick to any surface until it gets close to the internal temperature of the car ... This can take like 25 min :(

I admit that the radio looks like a nice spot to mount the GPS, but I use the radio.

Hi All

I've mounted my Garmin 855 and Ultraguage in the center glove Box. Cut a small rectangular hole (dremel) to slide the UG wire through to minimize wire clutter and cut a similar hole for the Garmin mounting bracket . The Garmin bracket has a tight enough fit to "hold" the GPS unit very steady, at the proper angle for viewing and most importantly allow the clove box to be closed when not in use. The glove box door "just" clears the GPS but it is nice to be able to hide the GPS and yet when I drive the car, I just open the glove box and there is the GPS and UG, right where I want it. The Garmin 855 has voice command (button mounted on turn signal) and works surprisingly well.

There is "stuff" under the glove box, so proceed with reasonable care. Lower the steering wheel and remove the two plastic covers around the lower wheel assembly to get a better view of what is under the box. You do not want to cut into anything important. To get the GPS at the right angle, the hole was cut into the "lip" of the glove box. Each GPS is going to be a bit different.

I think I'll look into your glove box mounting. That's where I keep my GPS when I'm not using it. I like that you can close it up and hide everything. My Scangauge is in plain sight and while the GPS is hidden, the mount is still out there. I'll have to try driving with the glove box open to see how it looks. Thanks!

Well, my Magellan won't fit, too tall to close the glove box . The only way I could make it work would be a hinged spring pop-up when I open the glove box.

I use the Scangauge all the time so I will keep it where it is. It's not visually appealing riding around with the glove box open.
