snow tires - which ones?

I'm considering getting a set of blizzaks as a 2nd set of wheels/tires for trips up to Tahoe this winter. Are there better snow tires that I should be looking at?

I just put blizzaks on my 15" steel rims and the new tires from the steelies onto 15x7 TRD alloys for this spring
Have not had the Blizzaks in the snow yet but they seem quiet enough on the highway

I just bought some firestone winterforce for the Yaris for my sister. The Fray seem to like General Altimax Arctic which are made on Deutchsland by GISLAVED famous for Swede SAAb tyres. I just though the Yar needed all the help itcould get and the tread looked wicked aggressive on the 'Stones. With my Sis driving it will be miracle that she doesnt wreck it.

Love my Graspics DS-2. Great grip and I really have to crank her to break traction (45mph - 2 inches of snow on road, no sand or salt).

I've been very happy with Zacks. Have used the latest incarnations on several vehicles dating back into the mid 80's and really had no reason to gamble on other brands when the time came to equip our new vehicles. Not saying other brands aren't good. I've just had no reason to change.

I hear the General Altimax are same as Gislaved and Nokians and made in DE. Good for low $$. The Winterstorm looked the most agressive , but I will probably be regretting the tire noise on the Interstate on dry days. Ill grim and bear it!:redface:

sure would have been nice to find a set of 14" toyota rims for a cheaper 185/65/14s

After tonight, I wish I lived in a warmer climate. We had a few inches of
snow this afternoon. Then the temps dropped into the teens. You know
how hard the ice was on the windshield wipers and how much fun (NOT) it
was scraping the windows at 12:30 am?? I even had some isopropyl alcohol
and it took a long time to free those wipers. :frown:

This was my first time driving in the snow with the new car and the original
tires. It was great....though I hate the 17 degree weather! :thumbdown:
I'll have to see what the factory tires are like when we get some more
snowfalls.

My carpoolers and I will be stopping by the local ski area on the way to work this morning for some snowboarding and skiing.

What will your commute this morning be like? :wink:

Back on topic, I do not like maintaining two sets of tires and my local conditions are wildly variable so I prefer an all season tire. I have been running Yokohama Avid TRZs for a while now and they do just fine.

Oh - I forgot to mention that I live and work in the Tahoe area. I commute Mount Rose 5 days per week, I have driven I-80 over Donner Pass under road controls, I have driven Echo Summit hours after an avalanche, Kirkwood, Homewood, etc... all with just the Yokohama Avid TRZs. I carry a set of Spikes Spiders for when things get truly gnarly, but I only use them between 5 and 20 days per year depending on the weather.

sure would have been nice to find a set of 14" toyota rims for a cheaper 185/65/14s I think the tirerack has 14's for like 35 bucks - but the TPMS wont retrofit or work
