ok so I have been a member for a while but this is my first post...
I have a 2009 3 door LB with a manual transmission... (his name is Yoshi BTW) he has about 33,000 miles on him and I just recently drove him cross country after having him being driven by my mom for three months (plus I really don't know her driving habits)
well my problem is that I have just noticed that when I shift from 1st gear into 2nd and sometimes when I shift into higher gears I hear a "chirp" from the engine area. :help:
The sound is best described as if there where a single cricket in my transmission that got poked when I up shifted.
I havent noticed any thing different in the way that he drives or shifts but the sound scares me!
should I be scared? Is it something that I should be worried about? or checked out?

My daughter's 2001 Echo was named Yoshi.
I don't think a single brief squeak on shifting sounds serious. Perhaps a synchronizer engaging. Maybe just a squeaky joint in the shift linkage.

hahaha yeah He got his name because he looks like the character on an old Super Nintendo game Yoshi's Island ... there was even one that was the same color!
so none of those things are serious? because all those things sound kinda bad if you don't know anything about cars! lol

I don't think so.
My kids played Yoshi's Island, too.

Hey mate,
My Yaris has the same problem, and I searched on here a while ago and found this, which is really helpful. The squeak seems to be a common problem. Mine only started with around 35,000km clocked up, and was originally only when up-shifting from 2nd to 3rd .. But more recently it has started from 4th to 5th as well.
This will show you how to fix it. Squeaky Gears (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10644&highlight=gear+squeak)
Hope it helps!

Bella: Awesome thanks.... but is that something that someone who is completely mechanically declined can do or should I rather have a pro look @ it and bite the financial bullet?
better yet is there someone on here that lives near Monterey, CA that can do it for me?! lol (just kiddin... or not lol)

Blow off valve, at a guess, lol!
Perhaps bring it up with Toyota next time you go in for a service - You're still under warranty so they should be able to fix it up for you!

Hey... mine ALWAYS had the problem. i've tried to lub every connection from the shifter to the gearbox... it still does it.
I'll try to make a video of it.. but i have more than just the shifter's squeak :(

Good luck! They always quit making the noise when you get to the shop.

Mine did that to me, apparently! 'Oh we couldn't hear the sound so we didn't do anything about it' .. First lot of gear changes pulling out of the dealer *squeak*..!

Isn't that the truth! I finally took my wife's Nissan back to the dealer after a "failed" attempt at getting them to hear 3 separate noises. I took the tech for a ride and it took awhile and several miles but I.finally got him to hear them. Any normal day the noises would be driving us crazy.
It also seems to me dealership sensory ability is strongly affected by one's warranty status.

Here Ya. Been to the Subaru dealer with an 09 Forester with a loud engine knock and they "refuse" to hear it. Car will be sold before the end of the 60K powertrain warranty. If you se it on the used car lot - Dont "accidentally" buy it! ... B=)

So I just went to the dealership and told them what was wrong with the car and the guy says "Hold on lemme find out how much I am going to charge you for that"
I replied simply "nothing! Its covered under warranty" but he went to check anyway.
He came back after talking to the mechanic and said that he was going to have too charge me a 125$ diagnostic labor fee and then "IF" the squeak is not "the drivers fault" then he will waive the 125$ fee... but if they find something else then they will hold the car until I pay...:bs:
I of course did not bring any money with me said "NO! all you have to do is grease it ... i Don't want a diagnostic.... and your not gonna charge me!"
He replied: " And I am just supposed take your word for it that thats all that needs to be done"?
I said: "just like I'm supposed to take your word for it when you come back with some absurd reason on why its not covered under the warranty!"
so He refused to budge and neither did I and i eventually just told him to bring my car back around and that I will do it myself! and I stormed out
So I see the thread that Bella posted but is there something more detailed/step by step that will help me further? for example I don't know where the things in the picture are even located!

1. purchase can of lithium grease
2. print pic
3. open hood
4. locate shifter cables on transmission
5. identify actual to pic location (match up)
6. spray yellow circled area with lube, shift through gears to work grease into affected area, respray as needed
hope this helps

wooohooo! After looking for like 10 min :iono: and then brining my computer down to the car :iono: and then looking for another 10 min :iono: and then having my friend depress the clutch to get the general location..... I FINALLY FOUND IT
In that picture it looks way bigger than it actually is! lol i didnt realize how zoomed in it was! lol
but yes I found it and tomorrow I am going to auto-zone and getting the lube to grease it!
anyone have any suggestions on which brand/type
efff the dealership!
