Grave of the Fireflies
1988 version animated

notes
Roger Ebert considers it to be one of the most powerful anti-war
movies ever made. Animation historian Ernest Rister compares the
film to Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List and says, "it is the most
profoundly human animated film I've ever seen.

Big Fish was a good one for me. After making my wife watch it, I am now able to tell a story more than once.

Came here to say that.
You need to watch it, then watch the beginning over again as it ads a whole new dimension of WTF then go read the Wikipedia article. You'll be wrecked for a good week.

The Shining. Jack Nicholson still scares the shit of me because of that movie. And watching him in Batman only added to it.
