Driving, minding my own business, when a semi truck starts to swerve into my lane. No trucks or buses are allowed in the left lane.

All too familar. :frown:
I commute 50 miles a day...most of which is on the highway. I tell my wife all of the time that one day she's going to get a phone call from the State Police to come identify me...or what's left of me...once they dig me out of the fenderwell of some semi that is.

why did you slow down? you are actually making the situation worst, if he hadn't heard you or seen you you would have ended up under the trailer, you had more speed than him and would have been in front if you accelerated just a bit.
seriously? you do know that i drive a yaris. i was in 5th gear cruising at 65mph. does it look like i could of passed him if I would of floored it? I swerved into the shoulder where my car can fit easily as it was its own lane and then I slowed down.

I think I would have tried to avoid somehow, too.
Did you lay on the horn as well? Even with the wimpy horn, (I haven't upgraded yet),
I certainly would have let him/her know I was there. Maybe the driver was texting...

Yo man I dun seen all them Fast&Furious movies and if I lernd any thing frum them its that you shoulda hit the nitrus boost button and left that asshole in tha dust...
No really though, it's easy to criticize something you see in a video, but your reaction kept you from getting hit. Didn't look to me like you had time to downshift and get ahead.
Let's be honest, the Yaris is a nice car, but it's no rocket in the acceleration department.

Count your lucky stars. I lost my last car to a fully-loaded big-rig on the freeway. I only suffered a few small cuts but the front of car was torn to pieces.
And that's a very smart move to drive with a camera. In this lawsuit-happy world we live in it's always good for the little guy to have proper evidence to back him up while on the road (especially in LA). What kind of camera is that BTW?

4th at 65MPH will give you enough acceleration to get ou of his way,I'm not trying to knock you or anything , you had less distance to cover by accelerating than by slowing thus reducing thetime you were beside him and in the danger zone
He already said he was in 5th, and from the video if the truck turned faster, he would have been squished if he accelerated. Braking was the correct response without a sliver of doubt.
Not to mention you couldn't see the other side of the truck, there could have been something passing the truck on the right which you would have accelerated right in to...

I'm liking that dash cam.
I've seen different versions on the net and thought about getting one myself.
Now that you have dirt cheap cameras and flash memory cards it makes me wonder how long it will be before this type of system is offered as optional or even standard equipment on cars.

i had the same thing happen to me one time. it wasnt a semi though. i did the exact same thing you did because i could accelerate. i had a person in front and behind me. i honked waved out the window to get hit attention and it was like nothing worked! i really thought i was going to get smashed into the wall.

thank you my friend
That camera is awesome.
I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, except it was just a car. No signal light, the guy just started drifting into my lane. I did the same thing as you did and dropped back out of his way. I pulled up beside him and, sure enough, he was on his cell phone. I honked, flipped him off, and drove away. At the red light just past the off-ramp, he put down his window and yelled at me to watch were I'm going. I told him to get off his phone and drive his car. He called me a bitch and sped off. Classy, classy, dude.

All these dash cams i see are nice and all but it doesnt beat a good ole fashion headrest mount with a portable HD camcorder, the Kodak Zi8 does 720p at 60FPS, plus you definitely need to record the speedo cluster.
I really expected some Explicit words when that happened. Glad you ok.

See, I am usually the calm guy. I watch my language all the time. worse come to worse I would just mumble under my breath.
Regards to HD camera, is that I didn't want a camera like that. my camera is a lot smaller and the picture quality can be even better than the one I posted. It was at 70% resolution. that 40 sec clip was 160MB's.
When I was shopping for a camera I found a nice camera that has GPS tracking, MPH, G-force, front camera, and cabin camera for $450. Similar to the iDrive cameras, but you had to manually turn it on when the car starts. So one day when you really need it, you realized that the camera was never recording.
thank you my friend
