Here is a how to for a ghetto camcorder mount that I made for my PT. Should work on any car with regular type adjustable headrests.

I got 3' of 1x1x1/8" aluminum angle
2 u-bolts and assorted hardware

It attaches to the headrest uprights using the U-bolts. I attached it across both seats to help with camera shake. This is the first copy of the mount that will eventually become much nicer and easier to take in and out of the car.

Eventually I will add a rotating base and quick release connectors.

Nice mount definitely on the higher side of some I've seen, I would not call it ghetto at all. I have no clue what Geno uses his for as there are many uses. When I had one it was for providing video clips of "who won" but I was a speed addict and still sometimes suffer withdraws

...just wondering why?

I used it as a sort of ghetto data logger. I would point it at my boost gauge and tach so see where I was spiking to and and what RPM. I also used to use it while doing some spirited driving on my favorite stretch of road.

I was actually planning on getting back into auto-x with the Yaris. I gave up on it and sold my Neon a few years back.

If I do get back into it I plan on mounting lipstick cameras in the fog light area.

In a frontal collision It might just leave you headless...

I suppose the camera could go through the windshield but I don't see it chopping my head off.

Plus I don't make it a habit of driving around the street with it.

I started (finally) making a mount for my front headrests yesterday, if I can get access to my school's machine shop, I should have it finished by tomorrow.

This is one of my more useful custom modifications, imo. I will be recording auto-x and drag sessions as well as a rally or two this summer. The mod would have been really simple but I did not have access to a machine shop so I had to use my kitchen as usual. Future plans include making a quick-release for the camera and the ability to independently adjust the seats while the mount is installed.

Here's where I got my inspiration from: http://www.cruisecam.com/mounts.html The large mount they sell is $90 plus shipping. I have a total of $27 in mine and that's because the unistrut was kind of pricey.

DIY
Started off with a 3' section of unistrut, I wanted the mount to span between the two headrests for added stability. The reason I chose unistrut instead of a solid piece of aluminum is due to the rigidness of the strut and the added holes to have multiple placements for my camera.

Next, I placed the strut on top of the seats (after removing the headsets) and measured exactly where the holes needed to go. Of course when one side lined up perfectly, the other did not.

Then I bored out the headrest post holes in the unistrut to 5/8" on the passenger side and drilled 1 1/4" x 5/8" slots on the driver's side.

Then I made sure the strut fit nicely in place.

After confirming a nice fit, I lightly hand-sanded the outer surfaces of the bar then primed, painted, and clear-coated it.

Finally I put the bar in place and used 1 1/4" x 2" coarse bolt, 3 thick spacer washers, and a rubber washer (for the base of the camera) to mount the camera in the center of the bar.

Since I only have one camera, I had to use it to take pics of the mount. I did take two videos yesterday and they look very stable! I'll have to take a short one today and upload it to the net.

For better results, do it in your kitchen. LOL.

You forgot that, dork!

My version that fits all cars with headrest post.

ohhhh, that's a great idea to strap it like that. I have a similar mount and the seat vibrates, that should help a lot.

Looks good, too bad the weathers awful there.
I'd ditch whatever's strapped on that mirror, it's very distracting.
