Has anyone installed an aftermarket sunroof in the 3 dr Yaris. Or does anyone know of a reason why one can't be installed?. I know the interior light might be in the way, but they can usually be relocated farther back, but are there any roof supports etc that might be in the way?:iono:

I don't think anyone has done it on the Yaris but I'm pretty sure there are a couple of guys who managed to get a sunroof installed in their echo hb's... check out: http://echodrivers.com/forums/index.php or http://www.echo-bb.com/forum/

Hope you find the answers you're looking for..

One of the dealerships that I looked in (not where I bought mine) had one on display with a sunroof (and 17" wheels, custom body kit....slick!)

If you happen to live in the Toronto area you can check it out. It is at the dundas and 427 dealership.

I suppose it can be done! Thinking about it myself!

Cheers.

Yep, Mississauga Toyota has a sunroof on a 5 door yaris. Don't know who installed it but looks quite good. It is a Webasto sunroof that has tilt and when retracted the glass is outside the car not between the roof and the roof liner. And apperently this can be done on any Yaris.

Thanx for the info, I checked out the Webasto website and it appears they only sell electric sunroofs, (out of my price range). I called 3 Toyota dealers, and even e-mailed Toyota Canada to see if they could answer my question, the dealers didn't know and said they have no way of finding out, and Toyota Canada can't even be bothered to reply to my e-mail. As I said before, the more domesticated Toyota becomes, the more domesticated they act, and thats not a good thing.

Can you tell me what is the difference between an electric sunroof and a normal sunroof, and also what is the price for an electric sunroof?

Question... why do people in North America like sunroofs? what purpose do they serve???

when you drive? Doesn't that dramatically increase aerodynamic drag? why not just use the air conditioning or vent?

Sure it does increase aerodynamic drag, but so does opening the window. I guess it depends on the type of person you are. If you like to keep your windows closed at all times and simply regulate the AC/Vent then a sunroof is useless to you. But for some people (myself included) I like to open my car windows when I drive in the summer, and even on nice autumn days I like to feel the cool crisp air. So a sunroof fits in perfectly for my lifestyle.

I see - cool! I guess the idea of opening the windows for fresh air have never really appealed to me (major urban/city background)... opening windows = *gag*

Sometimes it get stuffy. Opening the windows may get too much air and the noise at certain speeds. Plus, if there are people in the back seat with long hair... haha.. As prefered to the sunroof's, it can be fully opened or just tilted and still doesn't make as much noise. Plus, it looks good when tilted up:)

Ditto, plus helps keep the car cool when parked in the sun (if you leave it open). And running the a/c greatly increases fuel cunsumption. and the fan is tooooo loud when on 3 or 4.:w00t:

If by normal you mean manual, a manual just pops up and most can even be removed, but an electric usually retracts into the roof. I prever manual to electric due to the number of leaky electrics I have heard about, where as I have had at least 7-8 cars with manual sunrooves and not one has ever leaked. And besides, theres no motor or fuses or wiring to cause problems down the road.

i love being able to see over my head in my car. it gives it a more spacious feel. if the price is right, i'm definitely getting a sunroof.

Do you know how much Webasto is offering the electric sunroof atfor the Yaris?

Dealer told me 1200 bones for a moonroof install.

Fyi, sunroofs only pop up, moonroofs slide back.

why?
05-03-2006, 05:08 PM
I have had a sunroof stock in most of the cars I have owned, and I don't think I have ever used them more then a half dozen times.

Of course, I hate the sun, so that could be why.

I just called the Webasto authorized dealer closest to me that installs their sunroofs, they are in Edmonton, and Im in Calgary (280km). I got a quote of $1295 CDN installed. Electric (slide out), sunshade, full headliner, lifetime warranty. I booked my appointment for the first week of June. They advised me they perform a lot of sunroof installs for many the area dealers. Assured me it looks factory finished when complete.

Any photos ubetiam?

I took the plunge and ordered an Infalda electric spoiler type sunroof for $330 (+ shipping). I'm doing the install myself (wish me luck).

I also found the Webasto model for $320 plus shipping. It only has a 5-year warranty through the seller, not Webasto because they void the warantee w/o professional installation whereas the Infalda has a lifetime warranty through Infalda.

i dont know why things in vancouver have to be so damn expensive! okay there are only 2 places in the whole greater vancouver who installs after market sunroofs and i called them and they quoted 1300 sth includes labour and the roof! but wait there is tax to it as well so i am looking at around 1600 to have that sunroof installed.

i am also looking to a cheapter to have a sunroof installed. prefer a power sunroof but i wouldnt mind getting a manual one as long as it looks good from the outside and inside. so plase post up some pics if you guy have them :)

Gaahhh!

I just got the Inalfa EVENT 300 spoiler sunroof through http://streetbeatcustoms.com/premspoilsun.html.

The site says you can wrap the headliner and the guy I spoke when I ordered said you could but when I got it, I couldn't see how. I called Inalfa and they said the smaller 300 couldn't be installed that way, only the 450. I'm afraid 32" is just too wide for the Yaris and I don't like the look of an interior plastic trim ring - I want a factory look.

To their credit, streetbeat customs is paying for return shipping but I was planning on doing the install this weekend.

Dang!

After speaking to Webasto and CR Laurence, it appears that everyone makes their spoiler sunroofs for smaller cars this way.

What to do, what to do?...

Violin
09-25-2006, 01:07 PM
I stuck with the Inalfa because
a) Lifetime warranty
b) The shape of the interior trim piece will allow me to wrap it separately with headliner material.

I have a piece of headliner cloth and plan to take down the plastic interior trim ring and cover it so it blends better. The cloth I found was a slightly different shade (a little darker) but it should look better than the hard plastic.

Here is the install (there is morning dew on the car):

Here are links to a few different spoiler sunroofs if you are thinking of doing it yourself:

Inalfa: http://www.streetbeatcustoms.com/premspoilsun.html

Webasto: http://www.sunroofdoctor.com/webastospoilerkits.htm

CR Laurence:
sunroof:http://www.technologylk.com/product_view.aspx?&source_ID=nextag&product_ID=2912
dome light kit: http://www.technologylk.com/product_view.aspx?&source_ID=nextag&product_ID=2913

The light kit would be nice because moving the dome light took some doing. CR Laurence doesn't say anything about warranty though.

A nice feature with the Inalfa is that it automatically closes when you turn off the ignition - no leaving it open by mistake.

I'm gonna see what an install shop wants me to pay to have one installed before i attemp this one... as its kind a perm. mod (unless your a good body wrk'r).

hows the seal work? its it a combinations of a rubber "strip" and caulk..

Violin
09-25-2006, 04:44 PM
This was my third time. The first two were just pop-ups.

You may have heard the expression in carpentry: "measure twice, cut once".

Here it's "measure 57 times, cut once".

The instructions with mine showed a strip of butyl rubber tape to seal between the frame and the roof. It didn't come in the package so I called the manufacturer. They said they stopped using that and recommended I use that black silicone made by Permatex - it's a non-corrosive silicone for use on metal.

looks great violin! i would love one of those.

is there any structural stuff that was in the way, or just straight sheet metal?

Violin
09-26-2006, 09:01 PM
Not structural - there is an anti-flutter bow that the interior dome light is attached to. I had to remove that and relocate the light. Three bolts at either end, bend it down, cut it and pull forward to pop the little spot weld at each end.

Relocating the light was tricky.

What exactly is an "anti-flutter bow" & what was so tricky about the dome light relocation? I have done a few pop ups in older cars with not much to lose if i messed up. Just want to have my facts straight before I cut away.

Violin
10-16-2006, 11:14 PM
The anti-flutter bow is a piece of metal that runs across the roof to keep the sheet metal from flapping at highway speeds. The side rails provide the structure so it can be removed as the sunroof frame is stiffer than the sheet metal it replaces.

If you look at the light in the hatchback, you'll see that it sits in a recessed cup molded into the headliner. Placing it flat on the ceiling doesn't work. If I could have found a decent looking surface mount dome light with a door/off/on switch I would have replaced it.

To mount it, I glued two pieces of foam to a thin piece of wood to make a support with a recessed area in the center for the light to sit in and put that up behind the headliner. I used the light lens as a template and cut a hole in the headliner exactly that size where I wanted the light. I cut off all the protrusions on the back of the light and put two screws through it (with the lens removed) into the wood blocking above. I practiced with the piece of headliner I removed from the sunroof hole. You may come up with a different way to mount it.

If you’ve done a pop-up, this is not much more complicated. Running power wires is an added step, but the end result is so much nicer.

violin your installation on the sunroof looks FLAWLESS! how much did you spend on the sunroof itself? and was it a big hassel to get it install? even tho i could already imagine it would be. i want a sunroof on my yaris but the shop is asking for 1600 for it >.< so im jsut thinking if its something thats NOT TOO DIFFICULT then i might go ahead and do it

Violin
10-18-2006, 08:10 AM
The cost of the sunroof was $350 shipped. I spent maybe another $20 on sealant & parts. It took me about 6 hours - much of that was spent on moving the dome light.

but the shop i have is asking me for 1600 CAD plus roof and labor after tax. the guy told me is gonna be a 16 or 18 by 32 and he said one touch open and close, tilt and other features but i jsut want a sunroof that can slide open

Violin
10-19-2006, 08:25 AM
That's for a moonroof. A spoiler sunroof should be cheaper than that. There is a lot of labor involved and liability for fit, leaks, etc. so they charge you for it.

Mine is one touch open and close with auto close on engine shut off so you don't forget and get rain inside.
