View Full Version : Moderators Overmoderating?

Regarding this thread VOLK replica rims for sale (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28929).
Why was my post deleted? All I asked was what brand the wheels were instead of just posting "replicas". The moderator who deleted my post is abusing his/her power.

+1 on the glitch ^ I don't think a mod did that because there is no track of posts being deleted by anyone of us. Usually if a mod deletes a post, you can see something was delted.

BTW that happened to me too a couple of weeks ago. You know there are hundreds of entries any given day, so who knows.

Astroman

Rather than accuse us, why not send us a PM with questions? Would be a lot more helpful. Must be a glitch because none of us can see that your post was deleted.

I'm sure it wasn't a glitch because PETERPOOP's posts were deleted, too. His may not have been thread related, but why include mine?

We didn't delete your posts. And not being a mod or admin you CAN'T be sure, only we can, and there are no deleted posts in that thread. We can see deleted posts and threads just fine, with the ability to restore the posts. We can assure you that none of us have deleted your or anyone elses posts in the thread. Glitches happen, and they've happened to me as well. Again just PM one of us if you have questions. Degrading the mods isn't the solution.

I gotta say something.

Sorry, but someone definitely deleted the posts. Peterpoop was being an ass in the thread, btw. My recollection is that yarisugi also said something about the OP posting up replicas; I know it wasn't just a question.

Claiming "computer glitch" doesn't serve those whose posts disappeared. Maybe Bueller was on for a bit and did some cleaning up, or another Mod that hasn't chimed in yet. Maybe this should be kept open until you know more.

with all of that said, OP you should PM a mod before committing to an open thread. Mods, you responded on the thread, so here we are.

tomato
07-02-2010, 09:08 PM
Garm, no problem keeping the thread open, but I doubt if we'll ever get to the bottom of this.

As a matter of policy we don't hard-delete anything, except when the user expressly requests it *cough*, but those cases are extremely rare, and even then, we have to fill out a box saying why we're doing it.

Just don't let this thread turn into a mod-bashing fest

PS (I doubt "Caveatipse" has anything to do with that either) :iono:

tomato

I don't hard delete spam either. I think that kind of maintenance is done on a regular basis anyway because the threads disappear on their own after a while.

OK, here goes: mods, if anyone is hard-deleting anything, please don't do it anymore.

tomato
07-02-2010, 09:21 PM
OK, I just sent the same message to all the mods privately about hard deleting posts, so now we'll see if someone reacts. :iono:

tomato
07-02-2010, 09:39 PM
the only posts to be hard deleted are spam and obvious trolling

Yeah, don't hard-delete the trolls either. The next mod logging in after you might need the info (IP addresses associated with the posts) or whatever.

Thanks :headbang:

I've been noticing a few "inconsistencies" here and there lately. I'm not sure what's going on. We mods never hard-delete. It's always more useful to leave proof that there was something wrong with that post in the first place, or in case mods make a genuine mistake and need to restore the post.

In this case, I see no soft-deleted posts. Either someone hard-deleted it (unlikely, but possible), or there was a computer glitch. I apologize on behalf of the mods if the former is the case.

My recollection is that yarisugi also said something about the OP posting up replicas; I know it wasn't just a question.
Yes, it wasn't just a question, but what I asked and said was "what is the brand of the wheel, instead of posting replica". For potential buyers, it's good for the buyer to know that the wheel is a replica and not the real thing, but it also helps to post the real brand to avoid potential buyers asking more questions and prevents anyone from being misled. Thanks for your recollection cali yaris. I'm glad someone remembered. I wanted to know the brand of wheel myself, but that post got deleted. I know it wasn't a glitch. Thanks camell. I'm not the only one :) I'm not trying to start a "me against them" war, just want the mods to be consistent and fair.

Yarisugi, i believe you. And if you know for certain that the post was deleted, go ahead and post again. If it gets deleted the second time...then obviously the admin has something to do w/ it or....a moderator who hasn't spoken up or is unwillingly not telling the truth.

Just checked back at that thread, definitely cleaned up. ChrisLB (mod) hasn't chimed in, nor is he really active. Perhaps he may have accidentally hard cleaned everything, or it may be a coincidental glitch that got rid of all post irrelevant (minus the OP's question) to the thread.

You guys don't delete the things people want deleted

No, not always. We try to be fair, believe it or not. I've left some posts up that I myself consider of highly questionable taste, but peeps seem to be enjoying them, so yeah, at times, I look the other way. I suspect we all do.

either, nor unlock threads that were only supposed to be locked for a couple of days. I asked for a thread to be deleted a long time ago. It was deleted for awhile and then it was reopened but remained locked.

A reminder, or a PM might do the trick. Sometimes it gets really busy in here, and then it's time to log off, and we forget. We're human. A quick PM "hey, dude, did you forget about my thread, thanks?" is all it takes. PM me / or leave a visitor msg if my PM box is full, and I'll look at your thread and see if I can figure out what the problem is.

Funny how when a non paying person claims a wrong all the mods tag team and jump on that person but when garm steps in you guys take a different road. WOW keep up the good work!

hmmm... I don't know if that's entirely true but thank you anyway, i'm gonna pretend there is a compliment in there for all the hard work we do indeed, believe it or not. :iono:

Do you really think that the mods delete post for fun???
It is possible that the Database lost 1 or 2 post (read,Write error). The website/forum is hosted on a server(still a computer) and many thing could happend.

cali yaris
07-03-2010, 01:16 AM
not for fun, but because there was some nastiness. Only the "nasty" posts disappeared, that is very unlikely to be random. Database corruption, in my experience, almost never results in "clean deletes" like this.

ztrack, thanks man, but I think these Mods do an extraordinary job with the tools they have, and even lacking the Admin-level support they so desperately need, they carry on, for all of us.

so, carry on... I'm prolly gonna end up with all those replica wheels anyway.

Mods: have you all changed your passwords since the last couple of phishing attempts?

Astroman
07-03-2010, 11:24 PM
I did, even though I didn't click on the phishing link. I wasn't even aware mods could do a hard delete. Guess I've been soft deleting everything, even spam. The only "mod" that went nuts deleting posts and threads was dropped as a mod and made a regular user again.

I can't speak for everyone, but I didn't delete anything. I think I do a pretty good job moderating, and I thank this community for allowing me to do this for as long as I have, and I hope to continue for a LONG time.

They are just posts, none of the deleted/lost posts was going to change the world. I think I've had a few disappear on here... the world didn't end. To start this thread without contacting a Mod first was bad form though.

I think the Mods do a pretty good job here. Most of the time they seem to get that everybody has a different sense of humor, typed messages don't always come across right and they tolerate a fair amount of intentional and unintentional trolling. I laugh my ass off at some of Peterpoop's posts (my odd sense of humor) but I understand why they get edited or deleted.

I've owned a few cars and been on quite a few forums and IMO the moderators here have been able to create a very helpful and friendly culture I've rarely seen. The posts that were deleted from what was posted in the above link seem very aggressive and I agree with whatever mod (named or not) that deleted them.

The mods are here to ensure that that culture is preserved. This place is great about that...if you want to see a place with problems check benzworld...those guys are straight up nasty! and for no reason! no fun

I don't think there is such a thing as over moderating. The only people who are complaining about stuff like that are guilty of some stupid remark that generally flames. I administered several forums in the past, and while there is freedom of speech and freedom of opinions and all that, there is no room for bashing another member (flaming). Those people were gone in a hurry...forcibly.

Someone has to police forums, for sure.

if they were to have been over-moderating, there are a few posts of mine that were toeing the line, that should have been "moderated", as they could have been construed as inflammatory...

case in point, my thread about light bulbs, which was a tongue in cheek statement about forum life, was never touched by the mod team...

IMO, the people that complain about mods on forums have never actually moderated forums before, or at least not forums with a fairly large membership. Forums that don't have at least a somewhat strict staff end up being 4chan.

real names on the net are dumb, they make it far far too easy to find peoples real life info, which can lead to real life problems.

we are trying to accommodate everyone, and like many hve said we could have been more forceful yet we decided to let you have your freedom, and look what it gets us. Now when we have to act we have some of you that whine and complain that we are power-tripping. truth of the matter is there are some people on here that are not happy with us being mods because they want to be and they choose to create problems on the forum to try and "show everyone what bad mods we are". Our mentality on here is live and let live, but we won't tolerate open forum member/vendor/lurker/etc bashing or flaming. We try to talk the problems out before we issue a warning and bans. The rule never changed for banning, its 3 warnings and then a ban, in many other forums is an automatic ban without discussion. We give you the opportunity to defend/explain yourselves and in 90% of the cases we will disregard the warning/ban because we managed to talk it out with the affected member. Now if we delete posts there is a reason and we always try to give a concrete reason (you can it under the deleted post). Now if you want a free for all its not going to happen. Some members are spoiled and have the impression that it is their right and privilege to act like they have no manners or that they can say anything without the consequences. If you don't like the way its done no one is forcing anyone to participate in the discussions , that is your choice not ours. If you want to be a mod ask the owners of the forum

Those of you who feel this forum sucks and the mods suck, etc., etc., I have one answer for you: don't log in to this forum. :iono: Go on Craigslist's rant and rave (for example) and tell the whole word how much we all suck and see if anyone will listen. Or grow a pair and start up your own website and/or forum and see what it really takes to moderate a website and/or a forum, let alone a forum this size.

In the meantime, when you're here at YW, we ask that you refrain from poisoning the atmosphere for the rest of the members. We just won't tolerate it anymore.

Word to the wise, Don't Mess with The 'Mater!

Haven't been on a forum yet where someone didn't think the mods were abusing their power. Personally I think our mods to a great job.

Excellent. A thread for unhappy dendrologists

i thought it was a birch, whine and runt...

unity is not essential, in fact on an opinion board, it would really make things boring...

For sure i guess it would if people didn't complains once in a while, and the mods can always get a laugh or two out of it.:smoking:

I've not seen the mods here over-reacting at all yet. It's a fine line between giving freedom of speech to people and saying enough is enough. I'm a mod at another site and you have to pull those finger back at times. Its rough, one thing guests here have to realize, yes I said guests, is while the site does need members to survive, thsi is in reality not a total free for all. This site belongs to an individual of group of individuals and you are here because they allow you to be. Sound weird? Isnt the internet some big free party? No, its not. It a bunch of privately owned web sites and some allow us to post our own stuff and share ideas and become a community. Like this site does. Its a family affair so to speak, And with that, we have parent or authority figures. And also little kids that need to learn respect for other members of the family. Thats when they get knocked down a notch or put in time out. Learn the pecking order, respect for your brothers and sisters and obey the rules of the family or get put up for adoption, bisnitch!!!! (LMAO Sorry, got full of my self there,,,,,)

I hear you and agree 99%. But mods are not the problem here at all.....

No, mods are not the problem here at all. Of course they expect us all to be sheep and robots and not have opinions in some odd cases. I mean yesterday, my posts were deleted from the GUNS topic because someone made an anti-gun statement.

EH, what I said wasn't totally out of hand compared to what some people were saying , but if that person didn't post anti-gun in a gun topic it wouldn't have been an issue! If the thread was labeled "What are your thoughts on gun ownership" It would have been a different story. Am I mad that they did it? meh I could care less, just wish i didn't type so much, but i understood the cleanup had to be done.

The mods are doing their job, as strict as they sometimes may be, get off their nuts.

Please let us know via PM the next time you feel the post was unfairly deleted. We do make mistakes from time to time, but they're usually easy to repair.

Yeah, TK that reminds me, why did you delete my post? was it really off topic to say that I hadn't been at the range for ages? Shooting is an expensive hobby, so how was that statement in a gun thread off topic?!!:rolleyes:

;)

(no worries, man )

By the way, speaking of "off topic" I don't know where else to say this but your new avatar rules. May the froth be with you too :D

Errr... I just went through the guns thread and the only post from you that I deleted was this one (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=513682), and that was because it was in regards to an off-color post from another member.

P.S. Mind taking this to PM next time?

I totally stole it from a twitter user. Makes me want to have coffee every time I look at it.
