If you were going to buy an AWD car, what would you get? I'm not talking your dream car, but an AWD car within your means?

My other car is an AWD Suzuki SX4. Good price, good economy, good AWD system. Plus, it was one of the few AWD cars I could afford with a manual transmission.

What would you buy?

A used Subaru WRX STi.

I like the SX4 format, but the weird AWD clutch system is scary in terms of the car's longevity and ultimate repair costs. (We drive AWD 4-Runners and Jeeps at work and they always have issues with their stupid dash knob based electronic on-the-fly shifting systems.) I want a simple REAL manually shifted locked 4WD for REAL off-road. If you can weld one into the SX4 I will be a customer. I don't have much use for AWD here, but locked 4WD and good clearance is required for many of our roads. I realize you suburbanites out there love your on-the-fly technobleep AWD winter cars - my purpose is just different.

I would get a used SX-4. It is small enough to be practical, gets the best MPG of any AWD, and has a much higher reliability and consumer satisfaction rating than the Subaru line.

Just my opinion... but I loved the Sidekick/Tracker... not exactly a car, but a very good utility vehicle. We have owned a 94 Sidekick, a 97 Tracker (both 1.6 liter, 4x4), and a 2001 Tracker ZR2 (2.0 liter, 4x4).

They got a bad rap... but got decent mileage, short wheelbase for mild trails, 4x4 for the winter, & a drop top for the summer.

So for me... the SX4 looks like a winner also. The roof rack system for skis... bikes... all great. What motor is in it, a 2.0 liter?

previous gen forester w/ a 5speed. love the looks and need the wagon space. id prefer the XT version w/ a turbo and 5spd, but id be happy with a non-turbo version.

plus they're very moddable.....used sti parts, anyone?

If it's not a Veyron, I don't want it.

Kidding, but I did take a look at the SX4. Seems like a decent practical car.

I do also like the less practical WRX though.

Probably a Subaru Impreza Outback. Suzuki would be second on the list but I have a lot of faith in Subaru's products.

Wouldn't mind one of these...

why?

I looked at the SX4 right when it came out, and didn't get it because you had to get a slushbox with awd.

If I was to go awd right now I'd first want a Toyota Celica All Trac Turbo. Yea they are old, but they were so amazing. Or an old Eclipse GSX, Audi or Subaru 2.5 RS. Used wrx's are getting reasonable as well.

If I had real money though I'd prolly go Lambo or Porsche.

You only have two choices under $20K in the US. Which is my limit.

Base Suzuki SX4 AWD wagon $17K

Base Subaru Impreza - MT $17.5K

I'd have to go with the Subaru. Though I have no need or desire for AWD. FWD + snow tires = plenty of traction. I don't need the added cost and less gas mileage of an unnecessary feature.

Sure some people may need it if they are out in the middle of nowhere way up north and need to drive through a lot of un-plowed roads.

I would go overseas to europe and steal or buy depends how much it is, the Suzuki SX4 WRC model, love the way it sounds with its chirp turbo :P and the way it looks, the wing just fits the model perfectly

That's because real Jeeps don't have "stupid dash knob based electronic on-the-fly shifting systems!"

I want a simple REAL manually shifted locked 4WD for REAL off-road.

Again, a real Jeep has that!

In case you are wondering what a real Jeep looks like, here's an example...

Unfortunately they also get horrible MPG.

Our facility used to have 2000-ish Grand Cherokees. They were arse-kicking rockets on the mountain. I was so sad when we started replacing them with the newer Grand Cherokees and found out that they changed them into flaccid soccer-mom cruisers.
