Each door panel has some hard foam with steal on the tips of some of the foam. What is this for? Safety? Structure? I'm working on diy power door locks and would hate to remove it if it's safety related.

keeps the panel from rattling against your door.

you're a safety engineer and you think that stuff could be structural?? mmmmmk

It is noise insulation. When they pulled out just a little bit in the b-pillar for a TSB, it was noticeable. Its not crazy loud, but it makes the already loud yaris just a little louder.

My screen resolution made the "just kidding" not show on the screen and I actually thought you were serious for a second...:drinking:

lol yeah.

UPDATE: My buddy and I decided to cut the foam. It seems like if you want DIY power door locks, you will need to cut the foam. From all of the comments, the road noise insulation comment rings best, but I am not sure what info. the comment is based on. So, future DIYers, cut at your own risk...

RELATED FINDING: I looked at the stripped door area and found a very likely issue for power windows DIY. The metal-stick that the manual power window handle attaches to that you would instead attach the power window motor to seems to sticks out of the door panel too much to make a flush install (read: easy) of power windows... so do your research before attempting power windows on our sedans.
