If you are wanting to go fast a Yaris is a poor choice,
Had my 08 stock sedan up to 80mph,felt like there was enough throttle pedal remaining to get to maybe 100mph.

Are you asking about top speed when you say "fastest"?
Top speed has nothing to do with mods, only gears, wheels/tires and rev limit.

I'll answer this if you answer my question: what is your signature video?
Fl highway/insterstate is like everywhere else 70 mph is the max limit...but people constantly go 10-20 over that....even buses with people in them (except West Virginia or is it Virginia)

I saw your Post Garm.. hehe...
IF we are talking TOP speed(fastest KM/h or MP/H)
The speed limiter came on at 199.
It took a LONG time to get there.
It was on a stretch of highway that had been closed for major road construction that connected to small communities. not a chance I would have tried it otherwise.

I don't go past 120 KM/HR - in BC excessive speeding ticket cost $383 CANADIAN and driver's penalty invoicing from just that 1 ticket cost $320 CANADIAN - for the next 3 years = $1343 CANADIAN for 1 offence (more invoicing - of course if you speed more)

My bone stock (as far as engine goes) Yaris 1.5l Liftback?
I've squeezed it to 210kph/130mph on the speedometer, on 195/60-15's which are 5-10% larger than the stock tires so I was actually going about 135-140mph.
And before anyone claims the speed limiter would prevent that? One click on the e-brake so the light turns on on the dash shuts that off, but doesn't actually apply any braking. With the e-brake fully disengaged, yeah, the limiter kicks in harsh. One click up? Suddenly it's gone on my '07.

I got it up to 110 maxing out 4th gear then shifted into 5th and took it to around 115-117 and was around 5500-5600 rpm so mabey could hit 125 max if no speed limiter . My modds then were all basic bolt-ons

Got a nasty ticket doing 85. I didn't notice that I was going that fast. Really I didn't. There have been a number of occasions when I caught myself going way over the speed limit without intentionally doing it. I have no doubt this car is capable of considerably more without noticeable strain.

Thanks for the enticement, now I have to put that theory to the test.
Well, it shouldn't be too hard. Just pull the ABS fuse (disables traction control), jack the car up on its front wheels and slowly go up to the rev limit in 5th gear. :33
Fastest I've ever gone in any car was 165 MPH (115 over the limit) but those days are behind me.

I have had my Yaris for 1 week now and I totally agree that it is easy to go over 80 with room to go a lot faster. We find that we have to keep checking to make sure we are not speeding because the ride is so smooth. It is nice to know it has the speed when you need it but we are trying to increase mpg and high speed doesn’t help.
Has anyone tried to dispute a ticket by saying something like seriously officer you know I am driving a Yaris right?

Can't afford the speeding ticket so I won't play. But, I will comment that on the freeway my '07 stock hatch wants to cruise at 78 mph. It's hard to keep the darned thing down, but when it hits 78 it just runs real nice and smooth. But, darn it, I have to watch it because I don't want a ticket.
I'm not a young guy, but when mine was a few weeks overdue for delivery I raised a fuss and threatened to cancel my order. The dealership offered me a Scion tC as a loaner until my hatch came in. Now, I realize that a tC is not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it was one peppy little ride. I had it out on the freeway one day and was in a rather peppy mood myself and had to outrun a cop, quickly exit the freeway, and cruise around a corner and hide in a motel parking lot. Fortunately, he got hung up somewhere along the way and never caught up with me.
That experience that day told me that I may never have a high performance car. E v e r.
Darn it....

Hmm... my gov doesn't let me go more than 113-114 mph. I've been there often and regularly run the cruise on the autobahn @ 100mph+. You want to talk about bad gas milage with a Yaris! It drops below 20mpg! lol.

About 110-113 a few years back. Was driving from Chicago to Iowa on a clear sunny day. Road was straight and flat, and not another vehicle in front or behind me, and I remember just flooring it. Next thing I knew I hit the governed limit and cross winds were were making me feel just a little uneasy so I slowed it back down after several minutes at top speed.

Lower it, get some wider tires and add a rear sway bar. That problem will go right away. I cruise between 90 and 100 during as much of my 400 mile weekly commute as I can...LA/OC traffic permitting.

Does the Yaris have a governor or limiter I've gone 117 mph one day and the next over 120 mph with a serious back wind on the same stretch of road? For a car with around 100 hp; 115 mph is about right. We might have rpm limiter but that's more for engine life right? A speed governor is for an M3 @155mph and When you hit 155 thats it even down a hill. BUT I don't know I'm a simple lawyer from Kentucky this Post is more of a big what if as you will.

The only way you were gonna do that is with either 18s and 225/35 tires with a stiff wind or going down a very steep LONG hill. That is the ONLY way that you will get that much faster than the 118 fuel cutoff and you would have been up to speed for a few miles at least with 0 cross or headwinds...in other words I call :bs:
fnkngrv
07-26-2012, 08:01 PM
I have reached 129.734mph and have the timeslip (133 by GPS) to prove it. I have hit 146 on a dyno (have dyno chart) when the rev limiter kicked in which is actually not a rev limiter, but a secondary fuel cut off as the ECM leans you out to over 17 for your AFR and it retards the hell out of your timing too...knocking off the rev limiter is pretty unwise. The 145/146 IS the top speed that the car will go with a stock motor "safely". At this point you would need to build up the bottom end making sure to upgrade the rods because in order to bump up the rev limiter for uses at extended periods of time over the 6250 you would want to upgrade the head too. The limits of the stock transmission are still a mystery since you indeed hit the rev limiter before you "run out of gear". Unless something changes I won't be able to verify the limits of the stock tranny unless I was to find a way to get the car out to Bonneville since by the time I do the LSRs next summer I should (fingers crossed) have both motor and trans built.

Ya'll oughta be ashamed of yourselves. It's lunatics like you that kill people on the road. Just last week a young couple was killed by some idiot blazing on the highway at 175 km/h. Tell us what you really think ? Hey .. it is all about what people can do to show off and get themselves on YouTube. I do agree .. the highways are not the place to see what your car can do. Myself .. I am very scared of speed .. so I go the speed limit.
The fastest I have ever gone was 220 KM/H on the Autobahn in Germany. I was in the backseat .. I wasn't driving. I think that I did something in my pants .. as that is twice as fast as we are allowed to go on the highways here in Canada. :burnrubber:

Was the 175 km/h driver young? We males sometimes do stupid things while driving until our frontal lobes have finished developing.
Don't lump all of the posts together. When I mentioned the fastest I had ever driven any car, I didn't say it was on a road that had any speed limit whatsoever. The 160 mph trip in the 911 was in California but, as I stated, I wasn't driving. The driver was much older and should have known better.
The Autobahn and Autostrade are HIGHWAYS. Both systems are controlled access, but they aren't backroads nor racetracks (despite that some drivers ACT to the contrary). One can get a ticket within either system for impeding traffic/driving too slowly. Every situation is different. I would agree that in a majority of cases, especially in North America, slower is better.

Not to encourage stupidity off a track/racing course, but the sedan seems to work pretty well at the speeds I have gone. It gets a little flighty around 128-135, but then balances out really nice over that at least to 144. I agree with edmscan in this case. I have been in and driven in many countries around the world. Some folks may complain about how terrible drivers are in NA, but really we can't hold a candle to the insanity in other countries. You would never catch me driving over 100mph on busy roadways let alone at night. Hell, even on the I-95 corridor from Houlton, ME to Bangor, ME (Google Map/Sat it) with the little traffic it has I am perfectly happy cruising at the 75-85mph that folks drive.
As for closing the thread I actually agree with why? about closing it. It only promotes silliness on the roadways. "Gee, someone said they were able to go xxx mph on the Yaris forum so I am going to try and beat it!" Universally stupid.

I must post the reason why I am bothered by it. First .. I will comment that I have been in Germany and have done 220 km/h and felt totally safe. It isn't so much the speed he was going but more the fashion he was doing it.
The poster had to record his high speed careless driving just so he could post it on YouTube. It promotes stupidity. If you watch the video . . he was passing other vehicles like they were standing still, thus making it a stupid and dangerous thing to do. If he would have posted his speed and not the videos I would have had no problem with it. In his second video he was just driving like an ass in a parking lot.
I will admit that I am biased in my opinion cause most of family are law enforcement officers, and when I see such crap on YouTube I cannot help but wanting to throw the book at them. It should be noted that such videos HAVE happened in Canada and the person involved have seen harsh penalties.
Can someone definitively tell me the speed limit in the area he was in and that he was not speeding at the time ?
If he would have done what he did in my province he would have received a huge ticket and the police would have attempted to permanently seize his car. (something they cannot currently do, but they are working on it)
There have been several cases of people driving at high speed in BC and having people killed in the process. Somehow I think that if one of your family members was killed by the poster of the video, you guys would probably not be promoting his actions.
I personally never go more than 15 km/h over the speed limit .. as excessive speed kills, something most of you seem to be forgetting.

I was driving to a Labor Day weekend party. On this back highway, I got behind an Eagle Talon Turbo with a fart-can muffler to boot. He was doing about 15km/hr over the limit, but there was no traffic, and I caught up to him so he wasn't going fast enough for me. The faster I got to the party, the quicker the beer would be flowing...
Anyway, I passed him, which I think hurt his ego somewhat: 'Young guy with his girl driving a turbo talon being passed by a wimpy Yaris' LOL !
Not much later after I passed someone else, he hammered on it and passed me after he passed the same guy I did. My wife and I were laughing about the whole thing. Then he went all nutty and was trying to pass everyone in about a 8 car line, one-at-a-time, to show off his "fast car" I suppose. It was quite entertaining. :D

Sounds like a contest - "I can drive more like a retard than you." You lost, but not by much.
If the road is good, 90MPH are no problem.
A while ago I reached 100MPH and I remember that downhill I once got close to 110MPH.
Remember the small engine I have ;)
This kinda hurts the MPG, I got 36 back then, but it was never worse than 33 :D

Explain how passing someone is retarded. I am listening.
Also explain that 20 km over the limit is retarded.
I made completely safe passes with no erratic driving maneuvers. He made a double pass, in a non-passing zone, with a turn up ahead disabling the view of any oncoming traffic. Then he played leap-frog with about 8 vehicles.
Thanks for useless commentary.

Lemme tell ya about MPG at high speeds. When I ran last year for the runs I did 13 passes at WOT through the power band up to 6k and after the total combined 20.5 miles I actually avg'ed still just shy of 30mpg with the bulk of the time near redline and over 100mph. I was pretty stoked. This year with my tune and VP100 racing gas I burned through 5 gallons on only 6 passes which only makes 9 miles however I had a more aggressive tune. I missed the 29+mpg especially when I spent 15 bucks a gallon for the VP100
I don't even wanna do the math on this year's runs to figure out mpg...lol
I will be intrigued to see how much fuel I burn next summer attempting 175mph in the mile. I can tell you that my friend with his 1200hp Nissan sr20 build burns 4.5 gals per 1.5 mile run on his 200+ mph passes. Guess I better dig deep just to start the damned engine!

If you ease into it, these cars can hit 112-115. Only on open straight roads, yes it's dangerous but what is life without danger? Lame, that's what.

Come on now!! Time to act like adults here. Maybe you have someone that loves you and might care that you kill yourself. Such disregard for yourself and your surroundings is vehicular terrorism. A car is an nothing more than an appliance and not a "Hot Wheels" toy. I challenge the moderator to kill this wholly stupid and hazardous subject. It serves no purpose except to "goat" idiots to act like idiots. Good day!

I live in Vegas and the 15 freeway that goes straight through town is about 10 miles of extremely straight 12 lane freeway. I work late at night so the freeway is pretty empty on my drive's home so I have attempted to max out my Yaris simply for the sake of this thread. So far I have reached a Top speed of 115 MPH before I get scared that the NHP's are gonna be behind the next overpass column. I have a '12 Yaris SE M/T. The SE has significantly firmer shocks then the LE or lower models so it is very stable above 90 MPH.

TTR Toyota Yaris Speed Record 147mph (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K_z9Wg1g-w&feature=youtu.be)
The car currently tops out around 158mph on the dyno. I didn't have time to upgrade my injectors before the event which sucks because I am maxing out my current ones by 5200rpm. I did take the car out one last time after the event to see and I did break 150mp by 1.8 miles....only 3/10ths of a mile away! Next summer will be shooting for 175mph in the mile itself and 185-190mph in the 1.5. The thing to remember that this is a sanctioned event in a relatively safe environment.

115 limited by the ecu.
Yaris SE MT on TEIN S-Techs (at the time).
And definitely NO, the Yaris is NOT "stable above 90 MPH." The front springs are 10% stiffer on the SE. The shocks are the unchanged.
With an unnecessarily high stock ride height, high engine position, high battery location, high seating position, high roofline (yet with no legroom and a barely adjustable non-telescoping steering wheel), short front control arms, archaic transverse torsion beam rear suspension with NO anti-roll bar, garbage all-season no-traction constantly chirping Turanzas, delayed electronic assist steering (with less assist, yet lower steering ratio on the SE), and 70% of the vehicle's weight over the two front wheels, and no major changes since 2005, the (2012) stock Yaris is hardly "stable" at anything above 40.

You're*
I know my impressions regarding the car differ from some but definitely not all people on this forum, although it's probably echoed (ahem) by every Yaris owner who's NOT on this forum. You're right, the Yaris isn't my flavor. But it was cheap and starts up every time - except the times when it doesn't start. But it has always started the SECOND time cranking.
I'll add that the car started experiencing clutch judder at around 4000 miles. Really, Toyota? With only 103 ft/lbs. (claimed @ 4200 rpm) of torque, and essentially nonexistent torque at ~1500 rpm, how cheap does a clutch plate have to be for this to happen on a new car that only weighs 2300 lbs?
Still looks better than a Fit, though. And I do like the gunmetal sparkly-gray SE wheels.
You're joking!
Right Juicy?
No, those are the facts. It's possible that Toyota thought the car was going to be driven by ushanka-wearing orangutans; You have to be shorter than 5'10" as per the up-close pedals, lack of legroom and non-telescoping steering wheel, with the just-out-of-reach notchy long-throw shifter, but with enough headroom to be wearing two cats on your head even with the high seat.:iono:

I am almost 6'3" and drive it fine and comfortably. As for the stability over 90 mph no econobox is designed to be stable over those speeds. He'll plenty of midrange and even a couple luxury sedans I have driven were a bit iffy over 85. It doesn't take a lot of modifications to make the car stable over those speeds. I feel the car is perfectly fine even at 120+ until around 126 before it felt floaty. Adding the underpanel kit fixes the issues pretty well since it causes the chassis to suck to the tarmac.

I've been faster through the turns at Bristol than in my Yaris, although, that was in a Petty driving experience when I did 12 laps. In the 90's, 92 was what I glanced at once, but probably around 96 for me.

On a 370mi travel some days ago, I did most of the time 90, and I didn't notion any suspicious vibrations.

117 is possible, I did it once, but it was down hill with a tail wind and perfect air conditions to make the most power with what I have. Plus some angry driving. I haven't been able to do it again, the speed limiter of 115 kicks in so it wont let me play that again.

I drove my 1KR 5 speed Yaris to the Nordkapp earlier in the year. While i was driving through Germany on the way back i got it to do 177km/h. I was going down a slight incline and had the wind behind me.
Although it really is kind of taxing driving on the autobahn in a fairly slow car because when you see BMW's and Audis coming up behind you in excess of 200km/h you have to get out of the way fast!

2SZ-FE 1.3l 87hp
5-Speed
I achieved that downhill on the autobahn and with a lot of patience.
When the car approaches 170 km/h (105 mp/h) it really climbs very slowly.
The car barely has enough power to top out in 4th gear on it's own.
You literally need to drive downhill to top out in fourth gear.
And it doesn't top out in 5th. 198 km/h at a little over 5000 rpm.
Rev limiter is at 6200 rpm.
Actually my goal was to get to 200 km/h (125 mp/h) but unfortunately another driver pulled in front of me to overtake a slower vehicle going "only" 150 km/h and i had to slow down a little. I bet the car can get up to 200 km/h if no one is interrupting your attempt. :D
Maybe lighter wheels and tires would to the job. I read an interesting article about the wheels and tires on the Bugatti Chiron. At 400 km/h the forces on the wheels and tires are incredible and i think they said that 3 tons of weight pull on every wheel at 400 km/h.

Oh by the way this engine is bullet proof. I drove 60 mins full throttle basically on the autobahn between Munich and Nuremburg and there was no sign of overheating.
Engine oil was constant at 110 Celsius ( 230 Fahrenheit ), which is pretty high, but unless the engine oil goes over 130 Celsius everything is ok, depending on what oil you have.
Cheap oil won't do the job at 130 Celsius.
