View Full Version : Toyota Arm Rest Installation

Has anyone installed the armrest from Toyota in their liftback? I'm wondering how much is involved and if it can be a "do it yourself" project for someone like me who is not all that handy.

Ours came installed from the dealer, but from what I've read it's a fairly simple install requiring a 10mm socket, and a zip tie (should be provided). It fits in the existing rear center cupholder. Definitely a DIY even for beginners.

I have one. It's not exactly hard but not easy either. I did'nt have to use any sockets or a zipties on mine. It also depends on what one you got. do you have the one you can get from a dealer or one like what Garm sells.

It was fairly easy to install but I needed to loosen the passenger seat rail for the wire clip tuck--I had to use an external torx socket (E10 I think) to do that. I'm sure my situation was atypical

You can install it without getting it entirely underneath the seat rails. I did it 'half-assed', just tucked it under so there was some tension, and it was no less/more stable because of it.

I don't have either one yet. Is the one from Garm easy to install? It looks quite nice in pictures.

I have the factory Toyota one. It was a cinch to install, aside from getting the U hooks to line up to the holes in the seat rails. That was more of a pain in the ass than anything else. Only tool you should need is a Phillips head screwdriver.

Be forewarned though, once installed, the armrest sits quite high, and if you have a manual, 2nd and 4th are not as easy to get into. In city driving, I usually flip it up out of the way.

as far as I seen Garm's sit a LOT lower and has a storage are I think too. As for install I can't help you there. Like others have said the "USA" version we'll call it is a PIA to get in but ounce it's in there it serves a good purpose. To tell you the truth it's one of my favorite parts I added to mine. And if you got a stick-shift I've herd it's kinda hard. Another thing you should be warned if you have a drink in the included cup holder you can't really flip it up very well, but all and all it's a good part I think.

I recently ordered this from trdsparks (yet to recieve) would you guys say it's fairly stable? I tend to lean on armrests typically

oh yeah it's pretty darn stable, I would sit on it or anything but it's stable. And after look over the install instructions posted, I completely forgot about needin a Phillips screwdriver......geuss it's been THAT long ago lol

SIPNGAS (Lisa) is from Wisconsin, and I believe has one of the Garm center
console armrests. She doesn't post much anymore...perhaps too busy.
I had wanted to see how her's looked and functioned with the manual
transmission. She said it was easy to install.

Question, I have an 2010 sedan with the center console/storage area. Will this fit over the top of it? storage still usable? Not sure how this fits, either one OEM or Garms.

The sedans already have the center armrest, so this wouldn't fit over the armrest that is already there. Liftbacks don't have center armrests from the factory, and thus this was the dealer installed solution. The base of this sits in the cupholder for the back seat passengers.

Ok, I bought the one from Garm. It was bought as a birthday present for my significant other who constantly complains about the lack of an armrest in the Yaris. Because it is a present, I can't go out and test fit it right now without it being seen.

It didn't come with any instructions, just a few loose screws. Anyone able to give me a hint as to how this thing is installed?

I just ordered one from Garm today. Hopefully, he will respond to your post.
However, if you look at one of my earlier posts, Lisa SIPNGAS says that it's
just a matter of removing the little felt thing in the cupholder, then removing
the bolt there. Insert the armrest and re-bolt.

I'm sure I have read that Garm added something to make it a little tighter fit.
You could try PM'ing him or call the store. Phone service was great for me! :thumbsup:

OEM one is very easy to install, took 10 minutes

The center storage in the sedans wouldnt qualify as an arm rest in my eyes! I'm 5'7" on a good day and its too low and back to far for me! I'm used to a real armrest like my wifes highlander. Or even the Ford service trucks at work. I was wondering if it would work in the sedans too, but I guess thats a no?
