Best way to accelerate

Hi All,

I've just managed to bag a pretty good deal on a used Yaris YRS. My questions is how to accelerate to maximize mileage. ATM, I change gears at just under 2000rpm to get up to 60kph.
Can anyone tell me if it might be better to from 3rd to 5th gear, and in 5th gear go from 35kph to 60kph. Would this wear out the clutch excessively, or will it be economical.

That's exactly how I accelerate, and I've found that if I use enough throttle to get to 2k RPM rather quickly that drivers behind me don't get upset.

yeah, I know what ya mean. I do try to be considerate of other drivers and save my crawling for the back streets.

I guess my questions is, does accelerating from slow speeds in 5th gear will hurt the clutch.

Personally I think around 3K RPM is the best point to shift for fuel economy. Lugging an engine is got particularly efficient or good for the engine and clutch.

Im easy on the throttle shifting around 2.5k too much throttle at low rpm may lead for a lot of carbon deposits speacially on the valves, is important to find the right balance if you are going uphill in 4th or 5th gear you need to know if your engine is under rev for the power needed at that moment, if the engine is under rev you will end up using more gas and forcing the motor.

3000 is pretty racey - I usually shift at 2500 during "quick" acceleration and 2000-2200 for low/conservative acceleration. I never let it get rough, but it will accelerate smoothly with gentle throttle from 1600 RPM. What do you consider "lugging"?

Light throttle is the best way to good economy. If one had put an eggshell under the throttle of my Yaris, it would remain intact after 50,000kms. I don't hold up traffic, I have fun, and (most important) my brakes are like new. Brakes are a big enemy of fuel economy!

Looking way ahead, watching traffic light patterns, using inertia, all work for good FE.

An old car of mine got great fuel economy, yet it registered 4,000rpm at 60mph, so it isn't rpm that eats fuel, it is throttle opening. My Yaris is way more aerodynamic than my old car, but again I seldom used full throttle for anything... sorry about that, zachryboles...

I agree with all of this, and enjoy my driving even more than before as it's so relaxing doing it this way.

best way to accelerate is to have as high gear as possible in less time so first you will consume some more fuel buy accelerating the car more fast but after that when you shift the fifth gear and drive smoothly with one speed it will dropped down very fast ;)
