nice, looks liek they didn;t have to extend the front bumper too much, if at all. Back bumper's bigger for sure, on ours here, the hatch is almost flush with the bumper, barely any ledge, I like that :D

The fiesta was built on this same platform. Think of the mazda2 as a cheap fiesta. If this came out 2 years ago I definately would have gotten this over the yaris. But I love mazdas so my point of view is skewed.

Who in their right mind would buy one of these over the Fiesta?
100 HP and yet a nearly pathetic 27/33 MPG rating? The Fiesta is heavier and has 119 hp and yet achieves a 30/40 rating. Doesn't quite add up. Plus, the Fiesta looks waaay better and has a far better interior. The 2 looks old already and its spec sheet looks just as old. Very disappointing.

Wish my Yaris came standard with a 60/40 split seat. Atleast Mazda knows how to do it right :(

^ hmm, what's not reliable about the Yaris? 2 YARIS ( '08 + '10 ) with #1 cylinder head gasket leaking oil . The 2010 seems to slowed down or possibly stopped . The '08 still leaks oil every 100+ miles .

I actually like the interior of the MAZDA over the FIESTA by a small margin . When sat in a FIESTA sedan in passenger seat my left knee was hitting the side of center console that meets the dash . The seat was set quite a way back . So if had someone in the rear behind you would be a bit of nuisance for both . Find the dash of the 2 similar to that of the YARIS . The oil changes would be a breeze . No obstruction of the vertical oil filter mounted on the front and the drain plug placed in the back of the pan . We had several FORD Festivas ( '90 > '93 ) which were MAZDA 121s' . Very reliable cars . We still see some kicking about .

Hershey
08-10-2010, 01:19 AM
We also had a '97 ( or was it '98 ? ) MAZDA Protrege' sedan with the 1.5 ltr. engine and a 5 speed manual tranny . That car had plenty of head room for front and back . Could be weak with 5 passengers . Traded that in for a '99 COROLLA with 4 speed automatic . That car had plenty of rattles and a hard / harsh shift from 1st > 2nd gear . The FESTIVAs were known for rear wheel bearings going bad and possibly causing serious problems when undetected .

IMO, the interior looks nice, but it feels cheaper than the Yaris. The plastics are very course and remind me of a Scion xA. . . all plastic doors with zero fabric inserts. The Yaris interior can look cheap due to the fisher price grey plastic, but it's fairly durable and put together well. All latches and knobs feel robust. I honestly felt like I was going to break the Mazda 2, playing around with some of the stuff inside. The Fiesta would clearly be a better choice (compared to the 2), but I'm sure it also costs a lot more.

I think I would. The Mazda is 4 inches shorter, has less options, lighter and cheaper than the Fiesta...something I'd be looking for if I parted with the Yaris.

My Yaris is an unreliable piece of shit, but it seems to be one in a million.

I mentioned this elsewhere (I believe hershey's Fiesta thread), but it only comes with a four-speed auto, according to the Mazda website last time I checked (versus the equally-priced six-speed option on the Fiesta). If this is the case, the Fiesta is a much better value.

yup , 4 speed auto for the MAZDA 2 . +3 ( '08 ) and +4 ( '10 ) for piece of crap . Even though we can't complain about the mileage for both . 40+ for each  . The 2010 3 door seems to have slowed or stopped . Will let it go for few weeks or more before checking for the oil leak , the 2008 sedan still leaks every 80+ miles after 4 O.C.s of SHELL 5w-30 conventional and new TOYO oil filter each time to shed the synthetic oil used for 20,000+ miles  . No more O'C.s' for a few months .

I think it's funny how similar looking this car is to the yaris liftback. The back end is almost a copy-just different tail lamps, but everything else is right where Toyota put it including the tail pipe and round fuel door on the driverside. The black triangle in front of the side view mirrors-copy. Ok, the interior is Mazda's/some parts stole out of other Mazda models. The front end is Mazda's own creation-silly looking, but the wipers where swiped from the yaris as well. Not a very original design on Mazda's part.

I didn't think it would happen, but I'm falling for the Mazda 2. It is fun to drive, and light on it's feet. None of the throttle lag my Yaris has with the 5 speed manual. The a/c did not feel as good as the Yaris and you notice it kick on and off somewhat, unlike the Yaris which has a transparent a/c compressor. I'd also miss my cold weather package on my Yaris-ultra quick heater and the starter that cranks even if I let go of the key, Mazda has none of this.

Also took a Fiesta hatch out yesterday-hum, no love here. It is very stylish with a nice interior, but the engine is a relic-timing belt, no coil over spark plugs-it has actual spark plug cables-old tech stuff here. So the money went into the style and the goofy auto 6 speed which sometimes gets a little in uncertain on when to shift up. I personally don't want to be the one to test out this unproven transmission. Still have to try the manual when I find one-people are buying this car up without even trying them. Doors close with a not very nice metallic clunk-latch I guess. Ok, the most annoying thing to me I stress is the turn signal click-it's like a wall clock with a pendulim swinging-tick, tock, tick, tock. There's my rant on the Fiesta-all style, old engine-with a timing belt-oh, the pain of dealing with that.

Here's what Consumer Reports have to say about the Mazda 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD_J1fKWMvE Thanks for that . We're considering that or a SUZUKI SX 4 all-wheel drive wagon . Not to crazy about the placement of the oil filter for the SX-4 . Could get quite messy . The MAZDA makes for easy O.C.s .

test drove a 5 speed manual base model priced at $14,730 and found it to have the most easy clutch and shifting of the cars test drove so far . The others were a 5 speed FIESTA sedan and a SUZUKI SX-4 all-wheel drive wagon with 6 speed manual ( $17,764 M.S.R.P. ) that we also test drove today . The ride / handling was very good and found it to be peppy . There's a easy access O.B.D. port for installation of a ECO-METER , SCAN GAUGE , etc.. Just plug and play . The rear leg room is good , but anyone over 5'9" will touch the roof . This may be the next car . The SX-4 with the C.V.T. is neck and neck ( test drove both ) .

here's pics of the TRUE RED 5 speed manual SPORT priced at $14,700 we drove yesterday and of the LIQUID SILVER METALLIC Touring with the 4 speed automatic that's $17,075 which we test drove earlier today . The 4 speed is smooth shifting along with plenty of zip . Very good A/C as well . I prefer the 5 speed manual  , while she'll take the auto  . Too bad it wasn't a C.V.T. . The head light bulbs are easier to change than the YARIS . The 3 door auto did 40.02 this trip and 40.09 the previous one . Will be hard to part with it if we traded it in .

and a few more pics of the MAZDA Touring and of a BRIGHT MAGNETA METALLIC automatic FIESTA SE sedan with a M.S.R.P. of $16,065 we tried out ( figure include it since part MAZDA ) . The 6 speed tranny is very smooth and responsive . The ride soaked up bumps very well . There's a discount of $66 for the FIESTA SE , $131 for MAZDA 2 Sport , and $76 for the MAZDA 2 Touring  . Scares us to think what the trade would be for the 2010 3 door  .

I am very tempted by the Mazda 2, but in all reality it is so similar to my yaris that I can't justify the swap and several thousand dollars to own it. But curiosity has got the best of me and I'd love to see what a dealer will give me for trade-I'm sure that will cool my jets.
