Hi all. I am a driving enthusiast.

I use to own a 1992 BMW 325i, and it was a great car. the steering felt like it was part of my body, it felt like it was one of my senses.

The BMW engine was good, and it cornered with good poise and composure. I use to drive it through the canyons in L.A.

But aside from driving the bmw on twisty roads, it was kind of a boring car.

The Yaris is so much more fun, it is very tossable, I feel like I can manhandle it. The Yaris feels like a toy or a go kart.

I have fun with the Yaris just going up and down the street. Although I do live near country roads (twisty).

The problem with the Yaris for me is the ride on the highway, its really noisy, not to complain but compared to other cars the Yaris is quite noisy on the highway.

Anyway i would enjoy hearing what others think of their Yaris,s.

Cheers

A go cart it's not  but it is fun to drive and if you forget, you can start hitting pretty high speeds on the highway and not notice it. The Yaris is kind of impressive that way for a little car. I like to toss her in the corners, too. I like her small turning radius.

that's pretty much it. I've been driving small, manual, hatchbacks for a long time now and the Yaris is my newest one.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

PS. Highway noise isn't a problem for me because the car I had before was way noisier ;)

Thanks for the welcome.

Ye its fun, too many tickets to prove that unfortunatly.

When Im feeling aggresive, i feel like I can lift the yaris above my head and run down the street with it, well not exactly but..........

This is off topic, but I lived in L.A for a few years, looking back I probably should have gone to san fran instead of L.A.

samuelll, you have the liftback or sedan? after reading 100s or yaris reviews, i've found most of the hwy road noise comments have come from the liftback owners. i don't think my sedan is noisy at hwy speeds.

I have the sedan.

But the truth is that part of the noise might be from the fact that the highway I use is not very smooth.

But my overall impression is that the yaris is quite noisy on the highway.

What are your overall impressions of your yaris?

I.. er.. get mad when the Yaris understeers. I wish I still had my E30s.

soundproof it! Just a couple hundred bucks at most, and a little goes a long way.

I now what you mean, I just wrote down this on another threat:

"Road noise was driving me crazy to the point that at highway speeds I was having a problem trying to listen to my 3 years son in the back seat.

That's way I've been deadening all my car, so far 90% completed my ride feels so different than day 1, it's like a little Lexus now.

This is the THREAD (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26150) if you like to read..."

would be a 100000x better car if Toyota would have designed the front to accept camber plates, really sux to have to use junky crash bolts to get - camber

I've heard this before,

why do you think this would be such a good improvement?

sorry for the naive question

Sometimes when it's windy, I get blown around but that should happen with practically all small cars.

It's true,

After installing lowering springs, 19mm sway-bar, rear camber kit -1.5 degrees, 195/50/16 Tires this effect of blown around has been minimize a LOT

My car feels and drives far away to what it was on day 1.

Understeer? what understeer?!

Keep your entry speed reasonable and floor it going out!

Tire/wheel combo plus road surface definitely makes a difference in noise levels. I drove my Yaris from Colorado to Maryland last year and experienced all sorts of road surfaces. Some were extremely quiet, others not so much. So I concur with your assessment.

Also, don't expect miracles from sound deadening. It helps to limit traffic noise, but the sound of tires on pavement does not really diminish.

I'd say look at the tires for noise. I'm still running Bridgestone OEM Potenza RE92's and they're very quiet on the concrete freeway even compared to michelin's on my other car that hum on the same surface. Directional tires seem to always run louder than non-directional.

No matter what tires you use (Yes it helps),But all Yaris lack of deadening materials from Toyota manufactures AKA "noisy at highway speeds"

How many miles does yours have on it? My stock tires were rather noisy at first, but quieted down as the treads broke in. I think the car's rather quiet.

I sold OEM tires after 3K miles (I didn't like them, too much hidroplaning and skinny for harder cornering and stability at high way speeds) sorry I'm use to high performance tires.

It was the start of winter so I got one of the best sport winter tires I ever own, they where much quieter that the OEM tires and performance was so good (SP Winter Sport M3 205/50/15) with 25K miles and just like new

Then for summer I got General Tire GT Exclaim UHP 195/50/16 (Awesome tire, a little bit noisier than the Dunlop Though. with 5K miles and I'm sold. My car has a total of 33K miles

.

I've been working on a extensive deadening project, I know tires and road make noise but if you block that nose you get a better ride

Tomato, whats the deal with that, does it get cold at night in the summer?
How cold does it get?

L.A. was too hot for me in the summer. The sun in California burns the hell out of me.

I dont think im gonna do sound insulation, dont want to bother with it.

Besides for highway driving, the yaris is a great car.

Can some of you give like small reviews of how you think your yaris drives in general and compared to other cars.

It's always foggy for me when I leave in the morning and I have to use my wiper blades for the sprinkles. The streets were soaked earlier in the day.

I should mention that the entire bay area doesn't get foggy, mainly SF, Daly City, Pacifica, and some other neighboring cities. I always get sun when I head out to the east bay or the south bay while SF is 20-30 degrees cooler with fog. Some districts in the city get more fog than others.

I agree about the stock tires - mine just turned about 12,000KMs old and are now very quiet - and that's even at about 100-120 KMs/H on the freeway. When they were brand new they were quite noisy.

I believe you!

But... I have never experience that with tires as they get older.

Reading tire reviews they claim that as they worn out they got noisier.

I'm sorry doesn't makes sense for me, is it possible that you are getting used to noise levels?

they get slicker, tread blocks don't slap around as much = quieter?

why?
11-25-2010, 01:17 AM
i love the yaris. I will say coming from something like a BMW pretty much every car will be noisier. Maybe it is because I am always listening to music that the noise doesn't bother me.

Or maybe it is because I've removed everything behind the drivers seat so I here all the road noise, and I kinda like it.

Because of that my car handles kinda neutral, with some oversteer when I push it. Not enough for me, but I am sure when I can get a suspension and the like it will be much better.

You can get cars that are faster, quieter, bigger, smaller, and more options. For the money the Yaris is one of the best values out there.
