5spd vs automatic

I know rpms at hightway speeds are lower on the automatic than the 5spd.

On the yaris specs the 5spd gives 40 mpg agains 39mpg on the auto. If the auto rpms are lower on the highways....wouldn't it be more frugal ?

I've driven a yaris automatic a lot...and it is ok....engine noise is louder than my 5spd echo. What are the rpms on the yaris 5spd at let's say...

100km/h ?
120km/h?
140km/h ?

I am going to buy a yaris soon....I do mostly highway driving, I don't mind spending th extra $$ for the auto box....I just need to decide...

Automatic transmission have more parasitic power loss. There is no direct connection between the engine and transmission unless the converter is locked up. Weight is also another factor.

Weight is usually some of the difference, but usually there is also different gear ratios as well.

I'd say that if you live in a high congestion area with alot of stop and go traffic you might want automatic. But if you don't then go manual.

well, seeing as how this car isnt a weekend sports car and your not getting it for fast driving, it makes sense to make it as comfortable as possible. So--id say automatic,and get a fast weekend car in manual since there isnt much mpg difference

It has to do with getting every bit of the 106HP and being more connected to the car.

The term automatic transmission makes me think of the gas powered cars we got to drive as kids on the Disneyland Autopia ride. You'd put your foot down to the floor and eventually they would pick up speed!

At least our brakes don't go on automatically when we lift our foot off of the gas!!!

The automatics are not as sludgy as you would think. Mine has plenty of get up and go. I live in a portion of GA that has no access-control on the highway and the speed limit of 65 mph seems to be just a suggestion. My automatic has NO trouble hopping on the highway with cars going 70-80 mph WITHOUT on ramps! BTW--I also call my silver lb, Yari!

yea:) anway i just have to throw it out there again, if this is your only car i can see wanting to feel attached to it. but if its for early morning and after work commutes, or city traffic, then thats time to relax and have some comfort. i say if you want to feel connected to a car get yourself a manual that does better than 0-60 in 9.5 you know? relax and drink some coffee in your comutter car, and kick ass in an older faster car:) but this is just me being bored, i'll stay off this thread from now on :P

My automatic yaris is just as quick as my Chevy Xtreme with 4.3L V6 auto was. That truck had 200 hp and 250ft.lbs of torque.
The yaris will run within' a second in the 1/4 mile of the standard.
You guys make it sound like the manual will leave the autos sitting still. at the end of the 1/4 mile there are just a few car lenghts between them.

if the gearing is similar to the scions (i have not yet delved into the gear and final drive ratios of the yaris) you're gonna have a very sad life at highway speeds (70-80mph).. connecting rods aren't known to be very strong in the 1nzfe

Parasitic power loss for auto/manual is different but not as bad as it used to be, 40-60hp on the old fords, chevs etc.
Ive had my fair share of compact automatics, theyre great initially but it isnt long before your tired engine and tired trans make your 85hp look like 40. Not that im saying the manual (as stated previously) makes it a perpetual rocket ship but youll get more out of your small hatch in the long run with the manual.
Longevity, full use of the 106hp and parts replacement costs were the top reasons for buying the manual. Way too much experience in 10yr old turds.
