so i notice i had a bunch of undeliverable emails this morning
seems as though someone hacked my hotmail account
is fixing the problem as simple as changing the password to something "strong" on my account?

Spyware and keylogger could be the problem.
Maybe you logged in on a public or friend computer that had a virus in a Windows live services.(Hotmail, Messenger, Skydrive...)
If not, Scan your computer with an updated Anti-virus.
I had a lot of e-mail about "Who block you on Messenger" from friends that got this kind of virus. Did you tried one of these services by this kind of Emails?

I didn't even know that Hotmail was still around.
Regardless of the actual attack vector that netted you a hacked account, bear in mind that Hotmail runs on Windows and according to M$ themselves Windows cannot/will not be secured. So regardless or how much you lock down your end and how much they lock down their end both remain quite hackable.

Do you mean that his computer or Hotmail's Server could be hacked?
An attack to the Servers could be possible but it is more an virus on the computer the user used to login to his account.
@Barber and shinlee: Changing your password is the best solution but be sure that the computer you use to change your password is not infected by a virus.

I'm sure you can change your password, but the next time you check your email on a computer with some form of virus, It will probably happen all over again.

how do you contact hotmail?
I've changed my pw, it sends out it's own emails ot people (like go here so we can see if your wow account got hacked...) so it's not my emails that aren't being delivered, but a spam bot email's that's trying to get people's personal info

So its is someone who got your password and use your account.
To contact Hotmail with their online forum : http://windowslivehelp.com
If you still receive undelivered e-mail, your computer is infected by spyware/Keylogger and the spammer have your new password.

can you provide more info of what actually happened? Undeliverable emails are not necessarily a sign of a hack. The internal server of hotmail could have a dns resolve error (may or may not be due to hacking), best to do would be to see what kind of error it was and contact hotmail for them to run a diagnostic. that said it is always good practice to change your passwords monthly and use both words and numbers with a mix of capital and small letters. Also if you are really determined and disciplined encrypt your emails.
Everybody on his contact list (me being one of them) got sent an email with a url to a link...that was it. I've received emails like this before from a few other people and they quickly replied saying not to open the link, as they their account was hacked by a virus.

To everyone:
Nobody should click on weird URL receive by e-mail or by IM. Always ask to the one who send you the link if it was really him. I receive a lot of e-mail asking to click on a link to know "If somebody blocked me on Messenger". If someone use your computer, tell him to not click on everything he/she see. You could be infected and dont know it.

Your account didn't get hacked, you didn't get infected with a keylogger or anything like that. What happened is a spammer used your VALID hotmail account as the return address. So, when they hit a invalid email address it bounced back to you. You probably got out of office replies as well. I had this happen on a 13 year old account that only delivers mail from people in my address book. There is nothing you can do until they stop using your account to spam.
So, your not hacked, not wormed or keylogged. Its just another annoying way spammers f*ck with us. Trust me, emailing microsoft wont do anything. Your just going to have to sit it out until they stop.
