Tire recommendations

Hey guys, my OEM tires on my 2008 Yaris LE have had their day. I'm looking to replace them over the next couple weeks. We are heading to the states for the long weekend which will allow me to purchase a set, duty free. With that said, I was looking on http://www.discounttiredirect.com at my OEM tire size of 185/60R-15 to see what's available and a good price. I actually called there and the guy working suggested one of the following:

Yokohama AVID Touring-S $72.00 USD each + $40.00 rebate on set of 4

Pirelli P4 Four Seasons $78.00 USD each + $40.00 rebate on set of 4

BF Goodrich Traction T/A $82.00 USD each + $60.00 rebate on set of 4

They do free shipping across the US too so I'd have them ship to CBIUSA.com at the border crossing and pick them up once we crossed over. With all that said, does anyone know first of all if thats probably my cheapest route for new tires? Furthermore, does anyone have any personal experience with any of the tires mentioned above, and can give me a good recommendation?

I wouldn't recommend the Pirelli or the BFG tires you mention above.

I like the Yoko Avid Touring S. Yes, they are currently $72 - $40 rebate.

I would consider replacing the 185/60/15 with a 195/60/15; I think they work better on a daily driver with stock suspension.

The Yoko Avid Touring S in 195/60/15 is currently just $66 - $40 rebate.

The other tire I would consider is the Falken ZE-912... just $61 in 195/60/15.

I am running the Falken ZE 912 195/60/15's on a 15/6 +45 offset rim now and they are perfect. Also running the TRD struts/shocks and springs. Perfect. On a stock set up they are just as good and it doesn't bother the speedo in a bad way. This by the way has Kimona's endorsement. Check my garage for the look with the old 195/60/15 Michelins. Hope this helps.

The 185/60/15 tyre is 23.7" diameter, while the 195/60/15 is 24.2" diameter.

Keep in mind the Yaris/Vitz is offered with OEM wheels/tyres ranging from 14" (23.0" diameter) thru 17" (24.3" diameter).

Yes, odometer reading will change ever so slightly; When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 61.2mph (98.5km/h).

For the Yaris (and many other cars), speedometer readings are inherently inaccurate out of the box.

Yup, 195/60/15's will work well with a mild TRD drop (provided you are running proper wheel offset).

Thanks once again. And just to confirm before purchasing, the 195/60/15 will fit just the same on my OEM 15" steel wheels, correct? They won't be too wide or anything, requiring a wider rim to fit?

They will fit just fine on stock steel wheels. In fact, you can safely go as wide as 205mm if you want... in a 205/55/15.

I was also checking out Sears.com and they have a pretty large selection as well. Their pricing also seems respectable. My concern I just realized with CBIUSA is that they are only open 3hrs in the morning on Saturday, and closed Sundays. This might not be an option now for me, depending on our arrival time into the states.

Last time we were visiting the states, I purchased my winter tires from Sears and it worked out well. If you don't mind taking a browse through their inventory selection, is there anything there that jumps out at you as a good tire for a good price?

Call discounttiredirect and ask them to help you find an installer who will accept delivery of your tyres.

The only problem with that is that we are taking my in-laws minivan on our shopping trip, rather than the Yaris; as it has a lot more room inside for shopping. So the plan was just to purchase the tires and then once home I would worry about installation.

Anyway, if that is your plan, I would either pick them up from CBIUSA between 9AM and 12noon, or perhaps a discounttire qualified shop would simply accept shipment for customer pickup (check with discounttire).

The selection and price at discounttire is so much better than Sears.

Should be no problems as we are given a $400.00 duty free allowance per person at the border, once in the states for 48hrs (which we'll be doing). With 4 of us going we can spend a total of $1600.00 dollars combined, which we definitely would not go over.

I think I will take your advice however and see if they have a shop that could hold them for me as I think our arrival time will be after 12 noon on the Saturday given my night shift finish time on Friday.

Yes, I did purchase these tires. However my family and I are not going states side to pick them up until next weekend. I doubt I will even run them this year as I'll be switching to my winters within a couple months and will likely run my current OEM's until that point before they get thrown out. Sorry I can't give much of a review, but from what I've read online to this point, they seem to be a very decent tire indeed.
