View Full Version : Putting a lot of miles on my '10 so far, how long should I expect to get out of it?

I purchased a 2010 4 Dr Yaris Sedan that had 17 miles, back on 6/22/10 and by the time I reach my 2 month mark next week, I'm going to be at almost 4,000 miles, which means I'd be averaging 24,000 miles a year. My loan is for 6 years, which would have me at around 144,000 miles when the car is completely paid off. If I keep up with the routine maintenance, should I get a lot out of this car? I didn't realize I'd drive it this much, but my new job has me driving 50 miles round trip, 6-7 days a week.

It will finally be broke in by the time its paid off! LOL With good maintainence, it will last along time. Much more than the 144k your projecting. I know the feeling though. I bought mine in mid march and am now closing in on 10k already in mid August! Thats just back and forth to work with a few road trips across Missouri. Adds up quick!

We put about 20,000 miles a year on our Toyotas and neither my wife nor I work! Still, we expect to keep our Yaris for 10 years easily.

Don't worry, it will probably rust out before the engine wears out! Toyota's and Honda's last forever.

With regular maintainance 300k should be easily achievable,

My parents had an 86 Corolla that was at 464k on its odometer when a friend borrowed it and hit a moose in 99. At that point there was nothing wrong with it. The only thing ever done to it was spark plugs and fluids. Now some may balk at that and say that I am full of BS, but irregardless, it is the truth. After the accident we sold the engine and tranny to another friend and he put it in his truck which believe it or not is still in use today.

24K a year is nothing. And with 150K, the Yaris will still run like new.

I have 90,000 miles on my '07 and it has yet to go in for anything other than routine maintenance.

What can be done to keep it from rusting out in the long term?

Unfortunately not much can be done preventatively from rusting. Undercoating will help but one little area missed and it doesnt matter.

The best thing is to wash it weekly in the winter time. Easier said than done. Lol

I have a power spray diy car wash near me and i,ll take it there and get the underside the best i can. Really just getting all the salt off / diluted will help.

I am a florida boy living in one of the coldest areas of the country. Car maint here is much harder than in fl. Cars here sometimes only last 5 years before they rust out so it is a major pita!

I suppose it depends on a lot of things. Everything working right it could last and last and last. Not all owners will have the same reliability unfortunately. If you drive 10k per year it could last more than 30 years! If it lasted only 20 that would not be too terrible either.
