Headlight Restore

My friend's tC headlights were getting hazy and yellowish after being untouched for 5 years.
I thought I'd give this restoring thing a try - it can't get any worse than it is now.
I bought the Mother's Headlight Restore since it was on sale.
In the end, you can still see some scratches and blemishes up close, but overall, not bad for a couple of hours.

I've used the rainx product. It worked fine, just be liberal with the lubricant and really go to town with the headlight polish, wash it then really spray down and rub in the sealant.

I would wager that all brands of headlight restoring products are basically just about the same with just slight variations in the prportions of the same ingrediants. :smile:

I used this kit last night on the 3 door and it did a pretty decent job. I am a bit of a perfectionist but it sure did more good than bad. Our Yaris started to get bad and hazy last year and got worse almost monthly. I hope that it will last a while till I need to do it again.

That is what happens when you live in the desert at 4500 ft elevation. But thankfully we garage it most of the time.

I've been reading the reviews on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-PowerBall-4Lights-Headlight-Restoration/product-reviews/B00341MIAW/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending) on this product and for the most part they have been positive.

Disappointingly, the tops of my 08 LB headlights are already starting to cloud. Of course, I do live in southcentral Texas where the sun can be pretty severe. I almost bought this kit today at Walmart but decided to hold off until I did a little research. A few did claim this product made their headlights worse! :eek:

That said, we had the headlights on our 2005 Honda Odyssey "professionally" done while it was in the shop and they are not crystal clear either. I don't think that such a level of restoration is even possible...

I recommend you use it ONLY if the lens is completely faded. In your case, I don't think you should use it yet. You're right - after using it, it doesn't return back to it's original state. It's still a bit blurred after I was done, but since it was really bad before, it was much better after. Another thing, I highly recommend using sandpaper with grit 1500 then 2000, wet-sanding is a must. It takes a lot longer but comes out better. You'll still see the 2000 grit scratches though.

The ones that claimed it made their headlights worse were probably because of two reasons. The lens probably wasn't that faded, but they tried it and found out that the sandpaper made scratches that the polish couldn't remove. The other reason was probably they didn't spend enough time on the sanding (esp. with 2000 grit).

Newsflash : ANY wax will do the same . That's right , any wax that you wax your car with will do the same thing . Personally I use Meguires NXT tech wax 2.0 .

Whenever I wax my Yaris (3 times a year : Pre and post pollen ,then again before winter ) I wax the head and tail lights .

My Yaris sits outside in the sunshine pretty much all day everyday .

Ah I missed this when I posted about the film on the headlights. Is there a way to prevent this from happeneing? Is waxing the answer?

ive tried some plastic polish on my all red tails that got hazed up from the cheap clearcaot applied. While it tOOK away some of the mess it stillS STILL DULL....

Yes, wet sanded because was pretty bad. If the headlights aren't that bad, you could probably do it without sanding. This is not a permanent fix though. It has to be repeated every few months, depending on how much you drive.

The other day I redid my headlights at school, I used 800 dry grit to sand them down, then 1000 wet, then 2000 wet, and finished with polish. I got 95% of the chips out, but at the very least they shine like new.
