I have some extra hard drive magnets and was thinking of putting them on the oil filter to trap super small metal bits. The Yaris has an aluminum engine (maybe I'm wrong) so is it even worth the effort? It's a 3 day old car and have free maintenance for 2 years. Is the dealer going to care about the magnet at all?

Been running a FilterMag on mine since new. Had it so I put it on. As far as dealer, if you let them do the changes it's one more obstacle in the way. Besides that I don't see any issue other than making sure they put it back on the new one.

ya, you can also get a heat extractor with a screw on clamp. it's basically an aluminum strip that's about 2" wide and has raised fins on it...and a screw clamp. it's supposed to draw heat from the oil.
magnets have been used since the dawn of the engine and oil....it's usually in the bottom of the oil pan.

Ive always used those Neodymium strong earth magnets on the bottom of my oil filter on every car ived owned. Then just swap it to the new filter when i change it. Also i use a magnetic drain plug. Every time i change my oil there is always a bit of metal mush that i clean off. Using a magnet will extend the life of your oil pump.

I did the same on my yaris sedan. I have used HDD magnets(2ea) on filters. Planning also to put 2ea HDD magnets inside the oilpan via metal epoxy or welding.

Hard drive magnets on the side of the oil filter works great. No warranty issues at all.

I found some nice curved ones out of a old old old server, made a nice ring completly around the filter. I'll cut it apart when I'm due for my next oil change (I'm just past halfway on my 10k interval)
