Undercoating

I bought my 07 Yaris sedan. For some reason, I sprung for the undercoating. Did I err? Buying a new car is stressful for me, so I picked out the car, and let my wife handle the paperwork. She's a cheapskate, so I was surprised that she signed off on the undercoating. It wasn't my idea, the salesman pushed it, and I was too stressed from car shopping and wrangling a three year old.

I'm told undercoating isn't a good deal. On the other hand, I park on the street in Minneapolis.

Good advice for someone who isn't me. :smile: I suppose I might have been better off without it, but a case can be made for it, as there is a lot of salt used on our roads in winter.

Actually, if it is a rubber undercoat it could do worse damage than not having any coating.

Reason being is after time the rubber will crack or split, and then that salt water gets caught between the rubber and chassis. This stagnant water is going to speed up rusting quite a bit. Making matters worse, you can't get at that trapped water to get it out as you won't know where it is.

Without an undercoat, you can successfully wash/spray/rinse/whatever the underside and get most, if not all, the salt/water mixture off the car.

In the dead of winter, washing the car can be tricky. Car washes are often closed, and even when they are open, there can be problems. More than once, I have had difficulty getting my key into the door lock because a bit of water had gotten into the lock. I've had to use lock de-icer or heat the key.

Toyota was real stingy on sound deadening materials on the Yaris.
You can see this in the fenderwells especially.
I'd check to see if it was done, and how well the coverage is.
Might not have been a bad investment...
How much did they charge you for it?
