Top mount or front mount intercooler

Hi,

i am driving a 08 vitz turbo. It has a top mount intercooler.
The top mount intercooler obstruct the ignition coil and spark plugs.

I am thinking of converting it to a front mount. However, my concern is
will it cause any turbo lag as the distance for the compressed air to reach the throttle body has lengthen.

Or should I keep it as top mount.

Anyone has experience on that?

I had a Suby WRX and I converted from the stock top mount to a much larger front mount. I'm talking like three times the size. It added considerably more lag. But it worked so well that when the boost did hit it hit very hard. I have mounted a front mount on my Yaris and although I realy havent gone on the gas much yet, I can tell U the lag is not nearly as bad as the Suby. But I have a smaller turbo that spools fast and a much smaller cooler then that Suby. The front mount I bought wich fits perfect in the yaris is 28"wide 5.5"tall 2.5"thick.

Should just be a matter of choosing a front mount intercooler that isn't stupidly large. If you check out Bluevitz-rs' thread regarding his Greddy install, you'll see that he was losing a substantial amount of power with a top mount at the low end. Plus, let's be real here, front mount intercoolers are sooooo much cooler. :thumbup:

Correction, the kit had NO intercooler. I was toying with the thought of adding an air to water intercooler because of space savings and efficency but ran out'a $$.

An FMIC might lag more, however that would easily be overcome from the gains by getting cooler air. Just do it right, and you should be fine.

I had no problems with lag on mine with the GT2554R turbo

Nop. It is not that.
1st of all, with a top mount you can't install strut bar.
2nd, when u want to do anything around the engine bay, you will have to remove lots of things. Even with normal servicing, i will need to pay more for labour.

1st of all, the strut bar on a yaris is useless

2nd, what normal servicing would require the removal of your top mount? oil change? don't think so.. spark plugs? good for 100,000 miles..

3rd of all, labor will be based on a book, written SPECIFICALLY for your car, and will include the labor/time required to remove the IC if required, to do the work. this means that even if you swap to a front mount, you're still going to get the top mount quote from a service tech, because that's what is in his book.

just give us the real reason you want a front mount and i'll quit harassing you (you want people to see it) lol

Hmm.... Regarding the
1. Strut bar, I doubt it's useless as I used it on my last ride, it did improve handling somehow.
2. changing of spark plugs can be DIY, and of course cleaning the engine bay
will be easier. Besides, the temperature near equator is around 32-34 whole year through and that makes the engine bay real hot. Hence, with the top mount (no scoop or vent on bonnet), there's only hot air going into the engine.
3. Lastly, in Singapore, workshops don't charge according to the amount of work they carry out and not according to the book.
