I just wanted to see what is everyone's take on what is considered a "Ricer".

At what point does simple modification crosses into Ricerhood? Is it a large exhaust? Is it a New Spoiler? Is it a body kit? Lowering the car to 1" off the ground and not be able to go over speed bumbs? Putting emblems on when said emblems weren't ment for said car?

Sorry if this was already answered, but when I search for Ricer on the forums, I really didn't see any topics about ricers, just posts with the word "ricer" in them.

Who cares ,do what you like ! Funny how when my 1970 trans am was new they were hated and thought to be covered in "rice",now they are a highly sought after car and sell for 60,000.

Spoilers, extractors, flares, shaker hoods all done on one car wad just to much for 1970 minds and it took until around 1977 and movie to make trans
ams a non-rice car....I always liked them my pals hated them...so do what you like not what a guy on a forum tells you is the rule.

i generally equate rice with lack of quality. a large exhaust done right is great, but a $29.95 super turbo fart-can held on with binder clips and duct tape is rice. same can be said for graphics, spoiler etc.

Well if you're talking about where the term originally came from, back in the day the muscle car guys used to call my brother, his friends, and I "rice burners" because we drove Japanese cars. It seems to have evolved from those days into a term to describe...for the lack of a better term, poorly executed modified cars. If we're going to use the original meaning of the term "ricer" then I'll proudly call myself a ricer because I race Japanese cars. If you're going by the latter, then I am by no means going to call myself a ricer.\

By the way, that picture that's posted in here isn't considered "rice" in Japan. There's a large following for that style of modification in Japan. The name for it escapes me right now but its actually common over there. So all of you JDM freaks on here, why not try to imitate that as well? ;)

Personally, I hate the term "rice/ricer as there is no definition that can be agreed on.
Rice has has gotten so far from its original meaning that the term should now be abandonded.

Now, It's like trying to define porno and you will get plenty of different definitions.

As the saying goes, porno is anything that excites a supreme court judge.
Rice is anything a non ricer does not like.

Are things like simply bad taste rice? No, they are just in bad taste.
Many times, custom cars are labeled rice even though they are not in bad tastes and some simply don't like it.

Shure, there are people who really deserve a derogitory term, any term, and ricer is as good as any, but is is used far too often.

Here is a good example, and not because of the mods themselves, but because the absurd point they were taken. The car is just way too far over the top.

Besides the absurd rear spoiler, the kit itself would be cool if it wasn't quite so ridiculously wide and absurdly low.

any mod that is done solely for the sake of looking "cool", yet looks "cool" *only* to the eye of the car's owner, is what I call rice. It might not be a single part, but a combination that just does not have any kind of harmony to it. One might say too many LEDs around the exterior of the car is rice, but if done properly, it can be pretty cool (case in point, PK's car).

long story short, tasteless, uncoordinated mods = rice, IMO

I kind of find the word offensive, and I am not even Asian.

The meaning of the word came from the way Japanese ppl do up there cars. Just watch the original fast and the furious. That is all Japanese tuning and, naturally, some American/jackass had to just make fun and equate the japanese nature and origin of the modding, with "rice" - what they are most famously known to eat (plus it is easier to say than "moogoo-er").

Anyway, I do my car how I want it, and I don't give a flying fuck if someone doesn't like it;) Becasue, quite frankly, I don't spend thousands of dollars on what you like or what you want.

ricer = slang for people who love rice.
I love rice. Therefore, I am a ricer.

Ok. What would you classify the car below? If you associate it with the "N" word than saying "ricer" should be the same.

I'm Asian and I don't take offence to the term at all. Its only a derogatory term if you let it offend you and give pleasure to the ones using it in a hurtful manner.

Also, I'm not sure who made the Fast and the Furious remark but the term "Rice Burner" goes way back to the 60's and 70's when Japanese cars first started popping up in the US. The term "Ricer" is just a "modern" spin on the word.

I referenced the fast and the furious, but I didn't say it started the term. Although it became WAY more mainstream after that movie.

Isn't a "ricer" just a name that is used to describe a driver of a modified import ride that the eye of the beholder doesn't like?

That car looks like it could fly if you put some wings on it! :eyebulge:

I sorta get it now. It's more shade of grey than black or white when trying to deem what is or what isn't a "ricer".

Thanks for all the responses. I'm gonna go get some lowering springs, a spoiler, some beautification trims and those "carbon fiber" sheets to cover my interiors/spoiler!

Yeah, I thought it might have been a bit much to have all those things without any mods to make the car go faster. I only have a sway bar installed, everything else is stock.

Yes! Some think they are the mod police and call something they don't like rice.

I find the term derogatory and I wish we would just stop using it.

why?
09-15-2010, 01:25 PM
I just don't see why allowing a word to hurt you makes sense. It is just a word, and frankly, a term with very old routes that was aimed at anyone who liked Asian cars.

Oh, and please F&F didn't make anything mainstream, the movies were only created after the import car craze went supernova.

sleey0
09-15-2010, 01:33 PM
Well after the import tuner crowd became bigger then that movie was made and most definitely it became more mainstream after that. Maybe in your area it was prevalent but after every 12 year old saw that movie they finally found out what a turbo was.

And I am glad someone else thinks the word is deragatory.

I had people call me a ricer just for buying the Yaris before I put any of my stuff on it. I don't really care though, I can drive twice as far on half the gas :D

I can literally beat anyone off the line in reaction time and maybe for the first 50-100 feet or so. After that power takes over and I have no chance.

Take happiness in reaction time, it is more important.

I don't see how reaction time is going to magically give you more power to pull ahead of a car with more power. Maybe the first second but def not 100 feet, especially with an NA Yaris lol.

And I don't care how fast you get into 3rd, these cars have almost no low end unfortunately.

You would save me a lot of money by throwing some of this pixie dust on my car!

And in a sense u are saying I can't drive which is far from reality:)

It is that clean and shiney thing I just hate. I don't think my car has been washed more than twice in the four years I have owned it.

Lol, definitely not going to win any races, but you'd be surprised at how slow some of these people step on the gas. And reaction time is fun.

I'm just saying there is no chance for the Yaris to beat most of the cars out there off of the line unless you are willing to go Garm's way, and that just costs a ton.

I truthfully don’t mined the term used to talk about a car.

Lack of quality (in materials or craftsmanship of installation)
When the modifications to the car cost more than it cost new
Modifications get in the way of every day driving

When it’s used to describe a person then I feel they pushing the line.

Well, I figure that with 50 more HP I will be able to keep up with others. Mine is a dd so I can't go Garm's route, unfortunately lol.

Plus I am not rich like him, either. :D

ricer is a term that sent me to this site. A local arkansas forum, comprised of mainly mustangs and vettes, kept bashing me and my mods. one guy with a honda directed me to this site, and i haven't looked back since.

but man do i wish i had one of those rocket cars previously posted.
