6-speed manual transmission is standard:drool: . A 6-speed automatic transmission is optional.

If you change the styling every 2 to 4 years. You can keep up with what's new in style. Rather than fall behind like chevy has been doing. Its fresh now...just not fresh 5 years from now, and toyota has dropped the ball a couple times with being the first to change, creates sales now...but when the newest big dog comes out. That cripples you when they have the newest technology and or design to deminish your sales.

Only saving grace for toyota. #1 in reliability.

Also the car looks great...will be by far the best interior styling I've seen yet in a compact. And the outside looks like a teenage sonata, with its big grin and big eyes...

In other words, it should beat every compact on the road on price, style, and standard equipment. Once again hyundai raises the bar.

looks very similar to the new Sonata really...kind of like how Toyota was using simliar front ends for the yaris sedan, camry, and avalon there for a couple years.

Very impressive, just like every car Hyundai puts out these days.

They are quickly becoming my potential alternative choice to Toyota. Dare I say. It's clearly happening - Toyota and Honda (and everyone else except Ford) almost seem to be moving at a snails pace, while Hyundai is a fast moving train. Their progress in the last 10 years is completely unprecedented. Impossible by most standards. The Korean automaker is the hungriest of them all, and have the cheap resources to work miracles. The whole rest of the industry must not doubt that Hyundai could rise to the worlds largest automaker. Perhaps still unlikely, but I would not be surprised in 15 years.

I also love how Hyundai and Kia (same company) are running with very different design directions. Hyundai is fluid, Kia is angular and aggressive. Very smart.

This car makes everything else in the segment look boring, including the interior (at least until the stunning 2012 Focus comes out).

I am very impressed with hyundai as well. I agree with most everyone about toyota making some of the most bland sedans but they are very reliable and have die hard customers.

The 2007-2010 Elantra is a very high quality car. Reliability has been excellent.
Expect this new one though, to be an even further leap forward.

I dont get Hyundai .. they change their designs every 2-4 years ... normally, it's 5-6

Hyundai has never replaced cars at a 2 or 3 year clip. They are working with 4 year cycles while most mainstream cars use 5 year cycles. Trucks and luxury cars typically go 5 or 6 or more.

The current Elantra went 4 years (it does seem like less but it has been out as long as the Yaris). A new Yaris will drop one year later for 2012.

Hyundai is able to do this due to cheaper labor costs and material costs. And their drive to become the best doesn't hurt.

looks very similar to the new Sonata really...kind of like how Toyota was using simliar front ends for the yaris sedan, camry, and avalon there for a couple years.

Most companies follow design themes. You don't want to be all over the place when it comes to corporate design. Companies need an identity. Still, these latest Hyundai designs still are quite distinctive enough to not just be re-sized versions of one car.

Those headlights are huge! probably bigger than the yaris headlights by a couple inches. it almost touches the door!

why?

not sold on hyundai. It has been noted that a bunch of their new customers came from GM. Not people who are use to high quality standards.

i wanted to like them when i was shopping, then again last month when helping my sister in law shop for new car. they failed to impress me...

but then again, i was looking at under 20k hyundai's... the ones you spend $$ look pretty nice...

I just bought a 2011 Elantra GLS with 6 speed automatic last week. I am extremely impressed. The interior is larger than a Nissan Maxima's. The standard gas ratings are higher than any non-hybrid car on the road---29 city, 40 hwy (for both transmissions). Car and Driver pegs 0-60 times with the automatic at 8.6 seconds. Here are a couple of pics and the Window Sticker (http://theparson.net/elantra/elantradetails.pdf).

8.6 0-60? Lol another gearing special. Does it seem like it accelerates slowly, or does it get up and go fast enough?

i will say it does look pretty good.

Just to compare, the Yaris is about 8.8 seconds.

cdavidhess
12-21-2010, 12:46 AM
It has good acceleration. The car has a good power to weight ratio. The engine has 148 horsepower. The base Elantra only weighs about 100 lbs. more than a 2011 Ford Fiesta. Hyundai uses light weight, high strength steel. The engine is aluminum.

Car and Driver puts the Yaris 5-speed 0-60 time at 8.9 seconds. An automatic would be slower.

Toyota isn't completely innocent when it comes to the mistakes that have been made. I think that their biggest issues stem from the plants in the US. I am very proud to be an American and proud to have served, but the bottom line is that we as an automotive country have been going down the shitter for decades hence the reason for the imports to rise as predominantly as they have for quality. I bought the Yaris because it was made in Japan. If it was made in North America than I would have bought something else. Every North American car that I or my parents have owned that was built after the mid 60's for the most part has had too many issues to count. Hell, my dad's 07 GMC HD2500 only had 60k on it by last fall and had over five grand in warranty work done. Not impressive at all.

As for the Elantra, after seeing a few real world pics, it really does look to me like a smaller version of the Sonata. :iono: Not saying that is a bad thing. Hyundai has been coming a long way from the garbage that they toted around for a couple decades. As for the 148hp I will have 50 more than that with my turbo for roughly the same price point (19k). I will still be getting real world HWY mileage of 36-38 and 29-31 city as long as I don't stomp on it. I still go with the old adage that you can spend less and get more in certain areas if you are wise about it.

Best of luck with the car. Hopefully as long as you treat it right, it will do you right for many years to come.

Most Honda's and Nissan's are becoming hideous. No thanks. I'd take a new Hyundai any day. Hyundai is arguably more reliable than Nissan as well. Hyundai still gives you the most for your money. $18K is a bargain.

Wow! Hate to say it, but I'd take the new Accent hatch over the new Yaris LB in a heartbeat. And considering the Elantra gets 40 mpg highway, this new Accent should achieve remarkable efficiency.

I just got back to Rochester from WV. The traveling weather was much nicer, generally around 50 degrees. The last tank of gas (highway driving, 70 mph) was 39.6 mpg. I am very pleased.

I have driven the Elantra for 2 weeks for over 1500 miles. The worst tank was the first one (all city driving) - 25.8 mpg.

Altogether, all types of driving and lots of winter weather, I have received 31.6 mpg.

I was able to drive some nice hilly, curvy, West Virginia 2-lanes. The Elantra handles great!

I am thrilled with the Elantra!

Sounds like you're getting an overall average close to 35 m.p.g.. Not shabby , right up there with a YARIS .

True. But with the Cruze, it's the engine in all models except the base. The turbo is actually a 1.4 liter, while the cheaper base model is a 1.8 liter. Interesting that the cheap model gets more displacement than the higher models with a turbo. And in the end they are only 2 horses apart...136 & 138.

As for the Juke, its turbo engine is its only power plant option, which makes it a non-option. It also starts $4K higher than Elantra's starting price and doesn't compete directly.

Plus, the Elantra has 148 hp compared to the 136/138 available in the Cruze.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/01/01-2013-hyundai-elantra-coupe-spy-shots628.jpg

Here it is, ladies and gents – the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe. The svelte new two-door will make its official debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show in just a few weeks, but our intrepid spy photographers managed to catch this completely uncovered prototype on the back of a flatbed truck.

Not surprisingly, the new coupe relies heavily on the same Fluidic Sculpture design language of the award-winning sedan, though subtle tweaks have been made to give the two-door a bit more sporting flare. The foglight housings appear larger and more angular, giving the front end a slightly more aggressive appearance. Out back, a small lip spoiler has been added to the rear deck that both enhances the swoopy profile shape of the Elantra and adds another element of style to the rear end.

As we reported earlier, the Elantra Coupe will get a sport-minded SE trim level, and all in, Hyundai hopes that the coupe will account for 20 percent of all Elantra sales. We'll have the full details in just a few weeks, but scroll through our gallery of spy shots to see naked coupe from all angles.
