View Full Version : My first oil change

I took my yaris into the dealership today. I was just a little early at 2,936 miles but it's all about prevention. It took for freakin ever for them to get done with it. There was only one guy working though and I didn't have anywhere I had to be so no biggie. I'm thinking I should've just opted out of the oil for life and just did it myself. Then again oil isn't going to get any cheaper and the cost of an oil change is just increasing over time.
Has anyone else purchased the oil for life from their dealership?

Just did my second oil change today.
15 minutes start to finish, including clean up. Do it yourself next time, its cake.

I know how to change oil, was a grease monkey for a bit (not the actual grease monkey shop). I have the oil for life package so going out and buying my own oil would be asinine. Besides, oil is only going to get more expensive. Sure, it takes some time at the dealership but down the road, it'll be worth it.

Something like $399 for the life of the vehicle. Toyotas last forever so I'm gonna end up making out on this one.
If you have to take the car in to a specific dealership to honor the free oil, I think it's a bad idea. It's like giving a waiter the tip before you even get seated at the table. The motivation to receive good service is no longer there. Also, once the car starts to rack-up the mileage and the $400 you gave away in good faith starts to become a liability to the dealership. I'm sure they'll easily find away to wean you off the free oil.

i'm actually surprised that the dealership performed the oil change at such a low mileage. most dealerships will only perform these types of services at much higher intervals, with the lowest i've heard being 5000 miles (obviously done in order to make money for the dealership). if you can keep up changing your oil at 3000 miles with this dealer, then i think you did get a pretty decent deal for 400 bucks. with the way most people drive, thats at least 5 oil changes a year. you'd recoup your money in about 3 and a half years. even if they used dino oil, changing it every 3000 should help to protect your engine. i personally use amsoil on all my vehicles and change them every 6 months (about 8000 miles). japanese car oil changes are a breeze...

My time is worth more to me, and as you already complained about sitting and waiting for an oil change that takes 15 without a lift to do, ill keep buying my own oil/filters, and doing it myself.

Does the US toyota dealers have the quick lube, I drop my car off at the quicklube bay, and with 15mins its done, you can even watch through a glass window, or hang out in the bay if you wanted to...( I enjoy wandering the showroom floor dreaming)
I also go early morning when the doors open to avoid any line ups.

My dealership offered a lot of possible plans, but not for oil changes - sounds better than any they did offer for a longterm owner.
My dealer has a quick in-and-out oil change program, but takes about 45 min. Being retired, that is not a problem for me.

$399 can quickly become a bunch more if you rolled it into your loan.
How much does an oil change cost if you pay out of pocket?
You also have to consider that you might have trouble down the road if you have engine trouble under warranty and you don't have the maintenance paperwork trail.
I still have not decided whether or not I will do my own oil changes or not. It depends on how much the dealer charges.

My dealership has the same stuff and the mall is right across the street if it looks like it's going to take awhile.

Didn't your gradmother ever tell you that nothing in life is free?
Somebody has to pay for all that "free" stuff. Can you guess who that "somebody" is? Clue ... it's not the dealer.

They chalk that up to marketing expense. It obviously works.
I honestly don't mind getting service done. When I bought my truck the A/C didn't work so I had to bring it in to have them diagnose and fix the problem.
It took 3 hours and it was reaallly nice just relaxing for awhile.

Getting the filter off a V6 Tacoma was a pain in the ass! The 2005 and on up Tacomas have it right on the top of the engine! Makes changing the oil almost too easy! The Yaris is also ridiculously easy to change the oil on.

even then is hard to firmly put the hand on the Yaris's filter, I found out the original one was tighten by kind of a Hulk mechanic, painful to take off even with the pliers

Get a filter wrench for that specific filter and it is a piece of cake. If your oil catching device is slim enough, you dont need to jack the car up. Me likeee!

I wouldn't have done it even if my dealer told me it was option, but they didn't offer it. I would rather buy a toyota filter and valvoline oil (at least for 20,000 miles, then to Mobil 1) and do it myself. About $13 total. I've had bad experiences with mechanics, even at reputable dealers. Maybe its just because it's such a simple procedure, and they do 20 a day, they get sloppy. I especially hate it when they overfill the oil and it happens every time.

They always put the newest or most stoned guy on oil change duty.
I always do it myself and use Mobil One. I've been using the K&H filters that have a fitting on the top so you can take it off with a socket wrench. They're a few bucks more, but really nice.

I wasn't even offered the oil for life service lol.
I change my own anyway, every three months or every 3,000 miles whichever comes first.

I did my first oil change last weekend (3100 Miles). I bought an oil filter from the dealer on my way home as well as an oil drain plug gasket. I got Mobile One extended oil at Wal-mart.
By the way... The OEM oil filter I got from the dealer was not the same as the OEM's I have seen pictured here. Looked a lot cheaper. I didn't have (don't really know how to describe it) call it an extra, thin metal piece at the top kinda notched around the oil passage holes.
All was going well until I checked the oil level when I was done.
I am a flipping idiot
The car holds 4 quarts with a filter change. The oil I picked up was in a 5 quart container. They also had 4 quart containers and that is what I though I was putting in the basket after reading the labels on a few different synthetic oils.
I didn't look at the container again when I poured it in. OOPS :iono:
So... I had to remove the drain plug and put it back in quick a couple of times.
I guess I am lucky though.. It could have been anti-freeze or windshield washer solvent I poured into the engine :bonk:
Thats the first time I ever over filled any engine. I guarantee it will be the last!

Pour in 3 liters and you'll have oil up to the 1/2 of the line. That's just enough

I used the attached info from this forum. 1/10th of a quart overfill won't hurt. Probably leave that much new oil in the bottle unless you let it drain forever.

i've heard you should use conventional oil until about 10,000 miles then switch to synthetic something to do with the new gaskets .

I had a free oil change from my dealer looks like they over filled it to me those bulk oil fillers aren't that accurate my dealer says to wait 15000miles before changing to synthetic I think its just bs also.I did forget to put the plug back in once remembered while I was pouring waisted over a Quart before I got the plug back in.

10w30 is way too thick especially up in ME where the temperatures are low it is hard for the motor to push that through.
