hello everyone. this is my first post. just got my new yaris sedan last week and decided to join a yaris forum. I am a bit of an audiophile and the first thing I noticed about my new car is that I really hate the sound quality coming from my speakers. But I really do not know anything about sound systems for cars.
I am thinking of buying this:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-CXS-GT5416F-CDX-GT540UI-Receiver-XS-GF1622X/dp/B0032FOJPW/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1286958906&sr=8-13
But can anyone let me know if there is anything else I will need? I can see there are speakers at the back seat and in the 2 front seats plus a CD player. Do I have to replace all these in which case I will have to buy the set in the link and also speakers for the back seats? In which case I will have to add this as well?
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-XSGTX6930-6x9-Inch-Coaxial-Speakers/dp/B0014E2PHC/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_b
Please help. My car dealership says they will install a new sound system for free but I need to buy one first and don't want to make a mistake.
Many thanks,
Igwe

If you want great sound, you should stick an amplifier under the seat, and power all the speakers... and throw an amplified sub in the trunk... and soundproof/dampen vibrations on all major surfaces... and end up spending a lot more money, see the Sound and entertainment section of this website.

thanks for the response swidd, but I am actually looking for something a bit more integrated rather than throwing an amplifier under a chair. I will look at the sound and entertainment section though. Thanks a lot.

You can do as much or as little work as you want. Check out these threads. There are a bunch on YarisWorld but these are a few guys that know their stuff, and you will get a killer education just reading their threads.

When you say "integrated", what do you mean? You don't like the idea of having the amplifier under a seat...which, at least in my car, is not really an option because of the uni-body bracing and shape.
Give us an idea of what you envision.

Looks like he just wants to replace the stock speakers with aftermarkets and slap a cd player in.
The spec's on the speakers and Headunit though are going to be a bit off.
XS-GF1622X Speakers
Speaker Power Handling
The drivers deliver 190 watts peak power (40 watts rated).
# 4 x 52 watts maximum power with front and rear/sub preamp outputs on the Headunit. You're looking at about 20 watts RMS there buddy, so your sound is going to be pretty similar to what you have now.

Been doing it everyday I drive 5 days a week to work and back my speakers sound like new stock. Even been asked if its aftermarket lol
Look at my photo, the right knob on the stereo not the volume one-
Push it in and then Push/Click to alternate through the options on it Bas = Bass Treb = Treble turn them to the max (Being 5) sounds good man.
If you want more than that, your ears are gonna pop. Though I turn up to like 30 volume lol.

Had one in my Fastback, cost 5 grand took it out. Too exaggerated for me. Everyone to their own I guess.
eww.
If you are not sure what you want, the first thing you should get is a good head unit.
What you linked too is not a good head unit.
How much do you want to spend? I will tell you the stock speakers sound pretty good with a better head unit. Now of course it sounds nothing like these guys that have spent 5 or 10 grand on everything, but i didn't want to do that.
If you do want aftermarket speakers, you must have an amp. Very few head units put out enough power to adequately power good aftermarket speakers. If you don't get an amp you will eventually run into problems with the speakers.
But first is first, spend a few hundred dollars at least on a head unit. Install it, spend a month or two, and then go from there.
Unless you are willing to spend $5 grand, then one thing at a time is a good idea.

Agree with Whys way, I spent 5 grand on a system it sold for 1,500 afterwards isnt worth it.

I'm sorry Kevin, I was trying to be funny, because I change my OEM HU with a Pioneer P-99 and it's true theres is no BASS or TREBLE in this thing...

I think if your music can be easily heard (or felt) outside your car then it's too loud. Not that I'm such an old fart, but more that it's invading my privacy and bothering me if I have to hear someone's idea of music (which is usually wrong, BTW :)), plus the cops in my pissant little town don't like that thumping any more than I do.
My new HU sound wonderful with plain Jane stock speakers, whatever they are. Tell you what, when that asshole GPS dude butts into your music to give you a direction, you won't want any more power. Startled the shit out of me the other day! I've had amps, subs, and all that...but I settled for all that shit in my living room, where I can experience movies like they should be experienced. In the car, I don't want or need everyone in town experiencing it with me...and I sure don't want to experience someone else's.
Just my opinion.

He he...He should come listen to ours...
If you're plopping $5K into your car and it's too exaggerated, then whoever sold you that $5K system is a (insert your own explative).
Derick's correct technically, in our source units, there is no specific "trebble" or "bass". There IS the 31 bands of EQ, the time alignment, and the other insignificant features...
Personally I agree with the last statement about music outside the car. In my case, I can "project" sound (actually the glass is fairly transparent for my mids and highs). I don't unless my windows are down. My panels do NOT rattle. There is SO much wasted energy if that happens. Regardless of the musical tastes, a car is so much more challenging to do a system in. If you can get great sound out of a car, a room is NO challenge.

Funny thing is nobody said anything about the system being loud. Nobody said anything about disturbing other drivers. Just because I have an expensive setup in my car doesn't mean it is loud. I am after sound quality. I like being able to hear the singer dead center in front of me and being able to tell that the drummer is directly behind them and hearing the bass guitar on one side of the stage and lead guitar on the opposite side. Some people don't understand. Everybody has different tastes.

31 bands! wow, i hope it is all electronic nowadays. I remember having a 16 or 17 band eq in my father's supra was annoying enough to fiddle with, especially if you hit something accidentally.

The P-99 it's like magic!!!
Just google it or check out this LINK (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Stage4/CD-Players/DEX-P99RS)
L/R Independent 31-Band Digital Equalizer
Precisely control the in-cabin acoustics with the built-in 31-band Digital Equalizer. Unparalleled flexibility is provided through either Left/Right independent setup, or for easier setup L/R common is available. Adjusts with 1/3 octave step from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and there are 5 custom memories to allow multiple setups.
Auto Time Alignment and Auto EQ
Time alignment automatically estimates the delay from each speaker to driver’s position and adjusts speaker sound output timing accordingly by 1/4 inch differences, so that sound from all speakers reaches the driver’s ears in perfect sync.
Auto EQ tailors specific musical characteristics according to taste, uses a microphone to monitor and analyze acoustics, then automatically fi ne-tunes all frequency bandwidths and front and rear speaker digital parametric equalization. These entire processes occur in 543 seamless steps in just about 5 minutes.
32-Bit Binary Floating-Point DSP
The DEX-P99RS incorporates 32-Bit Binary Floating-Point DSP for high-precision and highspeed sound processing. The unique use of 32-bit "floating point" DSP offers significantly higher accuracy, especially a high frequencies and low signal levels. This new DSP is five times faster than the equivalent DSP used in the DEH-P800PRS or DEH-P880PRS models.

If you're not planning on spending too much money, then you should go with a new aftermarket head unit and new speakers for both the front and back. The power from the head unit should be enough to make your speakers sound great, no need for an ampliphier. If clarity is what you want, then I say go for a kenwood head unit. They are AWESOME! I like Alpine too, but they are not quite as good with clarity, but they do pound out some better bass. As for speakers, I think Alpine, Infinity, and Kicker provide some of the best sound for the price and you can find them almost anywhere.

Oh my! I'd say leave that one to the pros, that is amazing. You need an ear far more attuned than mine to adjust that thing.
So is Pioneer the hu most of you sound peeps are using?

I think Kenwood is by far the most popular. Because of price and sound quality.

The P-99 is what Derick is using. I'm using the P-01. There is a slight difference.
The step up is the Carrozzeria X tuner and outboard processor. That to the tune of at least $4k.
IMHO the P-01/P-99 source is the best single DIN available abilities considered.
Why?- You'd be suprised what your ears can get used to when tuning a system in. The more options equal greater flexibility in this case.

sorry guys didn't get email notifications on new posts (I thought I set that up). Basically for me, the yaris speakers are simply not good enough. It has this unclear foamy sound which sounds like you have a walrus screaming in your cabin when the volume is a bit loud. I've been searching for 6X9 and 6.5 speakers that will fit to no avail (according to amazon). Will post a picture of my dashboard on monday since the car was bought in dubai and may not even be the same spec as the yaris sedans sold in america. So confusing.

If you have to work with a budget, get a Kenwood Receiver(average price $100-150), Alpine speakers for front and rear($80-100 per pair average for type s and about $120-150 per pair average for type R), and a rockford fosgate amp(average price $200 for 4 channel). This is all you need for an awesome sound system on a budget. If you already know how to install yourself, I say buy these on eBay, it will be your best bet for a cheap buy. If not, buy from crutchfield.com as they have everything you need to install these yourself with ease. They usually come with most hardware and instruction for installation for free with purchase and they have really good tech support and DIY videos.
