How far can a Yaris be lowered before requiring new struts? I've heard that you can modify the bumpstops on the original struts???

I have a 2" drop on mine ... and that's about as low as you can get, and I don't have aftermarket struts. Factory setup, still rides smooth as ever.

Thanks JBougie, Did you have to mess with the bump stops?

As low as you want it, aftermarket springs comes in different ratios so that depends on the person the lowest springs around are the TEIN S techs I have those and my ride is on 18 she sits low

As long as you keep it around 2 inches or under you should be fine.
I've had Eibachs on my Mazda DD for six years and 140k miles and I
am still on the OEM struts.

I can't talk for JBougie, but I have the MI springs on stock shocks. I did cut the bump stop.
I didn't feel any difference in ride quality though. But then again I only had the car for 300ish miles before I installed the MI springs.

I went to fat cat motorsports online and purchased their shortened bumpstops, still running OEM shocks just fine. Waiting for them to go out before I replace them with some good ones. So far the car handles awesome, can't wait to see what improved shocks do.

I don't know if it was needed but we cut mine, just the first nub.

dumb questions, i'm planning to do this on my next DIY project, what is bump stops? and where is it located at?
For the price of spring and shocks it's almost equal the price of coilover, what is the advantage and disadvantage of both?
thanks

Bump stop is a styrofoam piece that's on top of the strut. I wouldn't suggest going in blind and cutting it if you don't know what it is or what you're looking for. Find a good DIY with pictures :)
IMO:
With the Yaris, you don't need shocks with a lot of the springs - so it is GREATLY cheaper than coilovers.
It's great they are adjustable - however, if you don't have them adjusted properly you'll throw the cars balance out of whack.
If you get good coilovers, they won't squeek - if you don't get good coilovers, they have the potential of annoying the living hell out of you.
If you live somewhere that it snows a lot, it's great because you can adjust your car back up in the winter. However, since there is no weather protection on them - they rust very quickly. No one I knew would touch them in MN because they rust too fast and since we all had daily drivers - not worth dropped $1k on them.
Depending on the weather conditions of your area - they last about the same amount of time, if you're up north the cupplers and rods will rust out (like earlier mentioned) but you're in GA (I just noticed that) so you shouldn't have to worry about that)
I guess it's all with really just your preference. Springs are easier IMO and it's just less maintenance lol I'm lazy, so I'm all about convenience :)

Astro....thanks for the link info. Been wanting to lose another say 1/2 inch on my TRD set up that uses un-cut bumpstops. That may be the solution.
