Drum Cylinder Leaking - Squeaking

My breaks have started squeaking around 20k miles. It was bought in february. I took off the front pads and they look fine. When I put the parking break on and try to push the car, i notice a squeak coming from the right rear. This is where I hear the intermittent squeaking coming from. Yesterday I pulled the drums and every thing seemed fine to me except for the left side of the cylinder was wet and i wiped off fluid from it. It wasnt super thick, so im assuming its break fluid. The squeaking only happens after the car has been used for 10 minutes or so. The squeaking started off very quiet and now is getting louder.

Would this be covered under warranty? or would the leaking even cause the squeak?

It is covered if you vehicle still has powertrain warranty which ends at 60k.

If it was leaking it would be WET. That just looks like the park brake lever's been sprayed with lubricant.

Just get a tube of brake lube and put some on all the contact point. You should be able to pull the various parts far enough to squeeze some in without take it all apart.

clean out the drum of brake dust and lightly sand the shoes and drum with some emery paper or some 220 sand paper and put it all back together.

Squeaking is usually cased by dry part and/or brake dust accumulation.

He is right, it doesn't look like an issue. Wipe it down, go drive and check up on it after a day or two. If you see new then you'll need to put in a new drum piston. You'll also have all new fluid to bleed/drain and put in.

I did some servicing on the rear brakes of my Yaris this weekend because I had some squeaking going on.

1. Brake fluid leaks through the brake cylinder if you press the brake while the drum is off. I am guessing if you had brake fluid leaking, the shoes may not be placed properly on the wheel cylinder.

2. There was a lot of brake dust accumulation. Spraying some brake cleaner and wiping everything off with a rag got rid of all the brake dust. I sanded the inside of brake drum and the shoes.

3. Re-assembly. Take some pliers and compress both sides of the brake cylinder. This allows the drum to fit easier on the shoes. Tip: If you're having trouble putting on the hold down spring and pin, take some small cable ties and compress the springs, pull the pin through and rotate the spring to let the pin sit on the spring cover. Then cut the cable ties and let the springs expand. So much easier that using a hold down spring tool.

Results: Car drives smoother, brakes better, no more squeaking, and saved a crap load of money.
