the k&n recharge kit is getting expensive, im looking for something cheap, I still have a lot of k&n oil but the cleaner is out, Im just wondering if I can use ammonia to take out the oil?

You can purchase the cleaner seperately in various sizes.
Perhaps that would be an option.

I would think any degreaser would work, probably even common dish soap. But if you use ammonia be sure to dilute it first.

Ya, it's probably just ammonia and water.

skip all of those and buy a bottle of simple green.
it's perfect for the job (i've used it dozens of times)
finish off with a water rinse, let the filter dry naturally than re-oil

I usually use the K&N clearner kit. But when I run out of cleaner (but still have plenty of the oil), I use laundry detergent. I figure it's cotton so why not use soap intended for cotton? Plus, detergent will get grease (or, K&N oil in this case) out. And finally, if you do your own laundry, you will always have some around! Use Woolite if you're worried about it being too harsh...
