Ok, so the official date has finally been set in stone according to Sony. Wednesday Nov 24, 2010.

Who plays? I'll have my collectors edition copy the day it comes out. I think my screen name is the same as on here, or it's just Bluevitz, haha, I can't remember.

I here we'll be able to setup private races and such, so maybe we can keep this thread going for all of those wishing to start a race on a certain date on a certain track with a certain car... blah blah blah. It'll be awesome!

I've had every previous version, and purchased the current PS for the time to play it. The game has, for me, been the motivating reason for upgrading from a PS to a PS2, and then to a PS3. Unfortunately, I've been waiting a very VERY long time since buying the PS3 for it to come out. I hope I still like it as much as I did over 10 years ago. I will, of course, be getting this from my wife for Christmas. :)

Same. Usually not a pessimist or skeptic by nature, but I've also been dicked around by Polyphony long enough to start having second thoughts about their word. So with that said, I stand by my original post for the time being.

I'll post again in two days. We'll just have to see what happens.

Why not transfer we've been waiting years for this game,i can't count the laps i have on the psp. Anyway PD gave some VITZ love by making it premium instead of a standard model so we can do full upgrades and have a fully detailed cockpit view, no love for the FIT.

There are some issues I've heard of on another forum...
Wheels can only be changed on the premium cars not the standard cars
No interiors on the standard cars
Standard cars are port-overs from the last GT game(The premium cars are the ones that look real)

First car I bought was the Toyota VITZ RS 1.5 ‘07. Was a little annoyed by the lack of color choices but anyway I'd still consider that model current gen. Only 5 door hatch was available though.

So has anyone raced the Yaris race in the beginner A-spec thing? All the yarii were way faster in the straights than mine. Was kinda pissing me off but I still got em in the turns anyhow.

GT5 is unbelieveable! Alot of people are confused though because was supposed to come out november 4th...then it was pushed back to january 1st...and then last minute they decide to have released it in a few days, which was today on the 24th. Alot of people don't even know it's out yet, they still are waiting for january lol.

I like how the first segment for the liscense test is with a Vitz RS. First car I bought was a used Nissan Silvia, turned it into a competitive beast!

well those *^&$%%&^$ sure kept us waiting, but it was worth it :D Only scratched the surface of the game (in a red Yaris of course), and it just feels like hanging out with an old friend :p

Interesting to see the fundamental difference between this game and Forza 3, from the makers themselves, Forza is an "automotive sandbox", more focused on tuning and upgrading, while GT5 is more of a clinical "real driving simulator", and has a more linear approach to advancement through the game.

I sadly have work to do now, back to reality :cry:

So I noticed there's a car maintenance section where you can get your oil changed and things like that. Is there an actual point to that or what? Like if I keep racing the same car without an oil change am I gonna blow my engine? Just wondering.

I have a 208hp Vitz now. I went with the supercharger instead of turbo. Seemed better all round. So many other things you can do to the car to make up for the hp loss by not going turbo. Oh if only I could do those things to my car in real life.

Also I know I've added a few of you guys but my PSN is frownonfun

I did not check if it's like the previous games, an oil change as soon as you get the car (to performance oil, presumably) will give you a small power gain.

As you race the car more and more, it will require an oil change (a light will show up on the speedometer when racing), and you would lose engine power if you leave it unchanged.

Same goes with the engine and chassis refreshes, I suppose, no idea how long until they are really required, though!

As for washing the car, well, it gets less shiny over time :D

And yeah, I know what you mean about doing those kinds of mods in real life :D 150+hp without forced induction? would cost a pretty penny!

When you buy a used car, the oil usually needs replacing right away. Just like in real life LOL.

My Vitz it full out on everything already. 287hp 200tq Soft slicks, 7 speed sequential transmission... It sounds SICK.

Edit: if someone has a really good internet connection and would like to host an online game, feel free to set it up and lets us know when and where.

btw that oil change bug is still here. or was, there's another patch today. you buy a new vitz, oil change and you get like 5hp. lol. OH the FT-86 is SOOOO drift happy STOCK. soo fun.

Yeah I had to buy another Vitz because the 210hp was just too much for those beginner races. Just didn't seem fair. I like to beat out other cars with my driving not just hp alone.

Which btw... has anyone been able to even get bronze on the TopGear challenge with the lotus'? I just slide around all over the damn place in those things.

thanks for the tips... i'll try that out. i have to say, that topgear track is one of my least favorites. i like the city tracks.

and yeah i know i was honking. i was just trying to get into your head lol. obviously it didn't work if you didn't notice til the replay.

also i just got a trophy for flipping my car. it was great. was wondering if you could do that. now i know.

Yeah, it should work on any PS3 system. It's just a matter of HDD space available. I think the later models just ran cooler because they didn't have PS2 compatibility.

None of the new PS3s play PS2 games - it was limited to one console when it originally came out, and then with the update prior to the slim version they nix'd that and now none of them are backwards compatible. Which sucks, but it's understandable why they did it.

Gran Turismo 5 is more or less the same game as Gran Turismo 1,2,3, and more, but more and more refined, sleeker and sleeker. Its focus is more on the driving dynamics and the skill of the player, upgrading and tuning the cars is of little details. It is, as the developers call it, the real driving simulator.

Forza 3 on the other hand, the developers call it a virtual automotive sandbox. As well as the racing aspect, there's a big focus on the upgrade and personalization of cars. Whereas in GT5 you can upgrade your engine with 3 stages of engine builds, 3 stages of turbos, etc, Forza breaks this down into smaller parts, you can buy cams, strengthened blocks, oil coolers, even engine swaps, making this aspect of the game much more close to life. Add on top of the the non-performance related stuff like paint jobs and decals, this game is more about replicating the whole car ownership experience and letting you experiment with all sorts of things.

So overall, I must say I think Forza 3 is the better game, in the sense of overall fun. I'd call it a simulation with an arcade feel.
But, GT5 still has this racing purity aspect to it, and it really is a continued evolution of the previous games. And it has some really cool features like a wide range of odd cars (I got a WWII VW Kubelwagen....), Go-kart racing, rallying, and the Top Gear Test Track :laugh:

So there you have it... I can't recommend one game over the other, each has its strengths and weaknesses... So... buy an Xbox AND a PS3 and enjoy the best of both worlds :biggrin:

How do we even get a truck? I was also trying to do this.

I got a fully upgraded almost 800 hp with like 600 tq Dodge Challenger atm unstoppable lol

and forza is for HURR FAST CARS AWESOME MAN while gt5 is moreso the beauty of cars.

Also what is the second song in the intro of gt5 not the piano one

I think GT5 is just about being pretty. As far as gameplay it doesn't hold a candle to Forza IMO.

the truck has 725lb/ft torque so look out for midrange rpms lol. i left the tranny stock so you can play with 4 gears lol

you can also use it in the professional league muscle car champs and win. easily.

Sooooo my PS3 died on me (it was one of the first gess, 20gb, no wifi), random shut off with flashing red light, apparently a mainboard problem... it'll cost almost as much as a new machine to get it fixed, so.... i now have a titanium blu gt5 limited edition 160gb ps3 slim :D sold the game to a friend, and i'll be up and running in no time :)

Eyeing a bucket seat and frame for a g27 logitech wheel... drool

I'm tellin ya! I was awarded a Bugatti yesterday and spent about an hour entering races just to wreck other cars and no matter what I tried the cars only showed minor scuffs and scratches. Sometimes you can get a bumper to buckle a little but that's the absolute worst that can happen. I mean seriously when you hit another car head on at 100mph there should be a little more damage than that!

Also what the heck is the deal with AI being able to spin you out but them being impossible to spin out. I get that if I get hit in the rear quarter panel that a spin out is likely but if I "accidentally" slam them in the rear like that they don't so much as squirm. In fact I usually end up going into a spin like that. Let me tell you that's not the person who would be losing control in that situation in real life. Just sayin.

Good to hear an update will improve the damage though.

you only start getting damage at level 20, they made it on purpose like this because it would be too hard to own a car in GT5 since it costs money to fix them up.

That's kinda dumb. No matter what kind of race you are racing irl, beginner or expert, you have to take damage into consideration. The way they have it in the game you can brake way late into a corner and just use the other cars as a buffer to keep you from careening off the track and pick up massive track position. That's not a very accurate simulation if you ask me. Damage should be universal in my opinion. If you wreck a car, then you wrecked it. What's done to it is done. If anything they could have just made it cheaper to fix at lower levels.

They should have looked to the game Grid for ways to make the damage aspect more forgiving to beginners but still realistic.

well as usual i don't understand how you can dislike the yaris so much and still be part of a Yaris forum but i'm sure no one's got a problem with you running something comparable like the iST. An iST is kind of just an xA right?

But then again it's not like a vitz puts much of a dent in your pocket though.

it popped up in used cars. i check it after every race lol.

i almost bought a yaris. that's how i ended up on YW. once i realized that not a single part (except for wheels) off the xA would fit the yaris, i decided not to buy the car. smaller/lighter/faster was my goal, but to mod it how i had the xA would have cost a LOT.

can't wait to see the IQ in action though!

Just got GT5 for Christmas!! WooHoo! First thing I did was buy a used older Yaris! I'm level 11 now and haven't driven the yaris in a while... *sigh* love the game though. Been playing it every night since unwrapping it. I'm going to have to go back and read this thread from the beginning! :)

Can't wait to discover all the interesting combination of cars/upgrades. Last night I spent a huge ton of money on just about every upgrade for an old dodge charger R/T so it could win the supercar races in professional. (over 700HP) That was difficult! (the supercharger whine is insane!)

I really like the premium cars and driving from the inside view. The Yars (although on the wrong side of the car) is almost perfect! Just loved it. I just wish it was as easy to upgrade my Yaris in real life as it is in the game!

That's how it was for me. I must have did the same race 30 times just so I could buy a $5,000,000 car. Now I have 80 cars and atleast 6 of them cost over $4,000,000. Try to save up enough to by the Formula Gran Turismo. It will beat any other car easily.

I got a Driving Force GT wheel as a refurbished unit for $70 tax in from Canada Computers a while ago.

But if you're really hard core about it there a new one coming out from Thrust Masters in the new year. I saw it in the news section on the first screen on GT5.

I saw the announcement of the Thrust Masters one - I think the retail for it is going to be around $600. The best price I've found so far on the Logitech is $99 from Best Buy.

I like the "racing line" addition (as found in many other "car games") but I find myself staring at it %100 and not really doing much of anything else. I think I'm going to turn it off from now and and try to do it on my own. :)

Last night I was helping my son (10) with his "career" because he thought you needed to sell the cars you buy and win to keep an empty garage (as in other games). He made it to level 10 but couldn't race in any more races and coudn't afford to buy any more cars. So I had to use the one car he did have (some kind of low rider called a "special" that you can't sell so he didn't) and raced enough in the amateur muscle car race to make enough money to buy a mini so that I could start winning the mini cup in prof to start making money to afford to buy a Lancer Evo GSR and supe that up to race in the professional supercar races. That car now that it is maxed out can easily win the first race in the super car races and make 21k in 3 1/2 minutes. So from that point I started racing that over and over to make enough money to get him going on other things. Took litterally all night but he's a lot happier now and knows to keep his cars and his money. :)

PS> Oh and the old familliar "playstation thumb" feeling is back, hehe I wouldn't be surprised if I don't start getting a blister soon. lol I'm going to have to dig out my old logitech momo racing wheel and see if that works with the PS3 and GT5, it is USB anyway.

seems like the line is usually the best one in most cases but not every time. the most useful part of the line is when it shows red to indicate that you need to apply some brake. of course the amount of brake it tells you to apply isn't always as much or as little as you need so with that, too, you have to experiment.

overall i prefer driving with the line because, to me, it makes up for the fact that i have no real physical sensation of how fast the car is going. no reference for momentum and such. in real life i kinda know when i am approaching a corner too fast but in a game it's harder to tell so the braking indicator helps me. if that makes sense.

I don't have gt5 yet... (or a ps3 for that matter) but I can kick major butt with the turbo Yaris on the PSP version of GT, and the racing line is always incorrect for the Yaris. I can almost always take corners shallower than the line says... it's what makes the Yaris so competitive.

If you like to "grind" for money I think I've found a pretty good setup (so far) for me. I'm level 17 so not sure if there are better ways higher up. I've won a Veyron from somewhere, I think it was for all gold on the professional series, or something like that. Anyway, I added soft slicks to it, adjustable suspension, fully lightened up, and added the ECU tuning (not sure why that was left off). I'm thinking those are the only things I did to it. Anyway, then there's the "High Speed Ring" in the Turbo Series in expert. Best I've done it so far was 3:14.1 and it gets you 50k credits. So about 4 minutes total for startup and restart each time for 50k. (I forgot to mention there's no competition form the other cars and the turns are mostly wide slow turns so zero stress)

Anyone found a quicker way to grind for money? I must have spent close to an hour and a half last night just doing that.

I wish there was a race like there was in GT2 where you won a 250,000 credit car each time you raced it and it was cake to win if you had (I think) the pikes peak car.

I use a well tuned GT-R or Z in the Japanese Series Races under Expert. It's lvl 18. Only 44,000 per race but if you put in the time and do the whole series you also get like 244,000 at the end with Gold.

And I also use the Bugatti for the European Series Races under the Extreme Series. Those are lvl 22 races. 5 lap races and 99,000 credits for gold on each. There's 3 tracks but my favorite one to do is the Monza track.

I like the Rome track also but I certainly don't get it in five minutes. And then there's the Deep Forest track... lol... it's pretty ugly watching me trying to maneuver the Veyron through that curvy bastard.

Yah, I goggled it yesterday and found some settings to use on the couchi that gives it about 1/4 of a chance but I still couldn't keep the thing on the road.

Most of what I read said to win "Like the Wind" in B-Spec to win a "Toyota 7" and then try it. Its still hard but manageable.

I still haven't even touched B-Spec yet.

B-Spec has got to be the most retarded portion of any game that I've ever played. I don't understand what the point of it is. Other than easy money and more free cars. If they were going for some type of "career mode" aspect they most certainly failed.

OK, what am I missing about the historic race car series in Expert? I bought the old ferrari and spent over 200k maxing it out and they blow me away. I buy a lambo couchie (countach), max it out, and still get blown away. They simply just pull away like I'm standing still.

I know it has to be more than its the deep forest track and its the #1 most hated race track by me.

Who's done it and how?

Not missing anything is just pretty damn hard tring to win with a "stock" style car against full out race cars . I got the old ferrari with every single modd done to it. I spent about an hour tweeking the settings and more important the overall gear ratios and was able to woop it up on the cote de azure track and so far I've been able to place 2nd at deep forest with it . Its do-able but really all in the car set-up/driving options Imo .

So I decided a few nights ago that it would be a good idea to race an enduro starting at 12AM. It was the Grand Valley race. 2 solid hours later I had my whole 160,000-somethin' credits and a whopping 150,000 points!!!!. I thought the race would have been faster, but averaging 1'52" a lap I miscalculated. I though I'd be able to switch to B-Spec mode throwout the race, like in GT3, or was it GT4. Oh well, maybe it has something to do with my B-Spec only at level 10 and the enduro is at level 25.

The number in the middle of the controller changes depending on the throttle position.

The only thing I don't like about it is that its not wireless. It works well on the drifting events but the actual races will take some getting used to.

I ordered a Logitech Driving Force GT Steering wheel this week, as one of my biggest issues (believe me, there's more than one), is throttle control. I can't get the feel for anything between 0 and 100% with the standard controllers.

The HKS controller looks like a lot more practical space-wise.

I saw one of those HKS controllers at GameStop the other day and looked at it. It just looked so foreign to me I just put it back. You'll have to give us a full run down on it after you use it for a while!
