View Full Version : Poll - LED Eyebrows for the Yaris - Vote Yea or Nay

Along with my HID retrofit, I'm toying with the idea of putting LED eybrows in for additional parking lamps - or even wired to come on all the time like DRLs. They'd look pretty much like this guy did with his tC (http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=75144). They'd go in the area I've sloppily highlighted in yellow (but they'd be white lights). I already made a set and they're pretty bright.
I don't want my car to look ricey. What do you folks think?

thats a yes to me...cuz it looks soo fookin hot on the 1st car
though i dont know how it will blend with the yaris. Anyway try it out, be the 1st one in the world to do it. (Hopefully)
I was thinking of making Angel Eyes for the Hatch but dont know how that could look on de yaris.

These might help you visualize it better (subtract the red tape).

I'm not too sure how I feel about it...
I think it looks kinda like someone took some rope light and put it in their headlights (in the daytime shot); but in the darker pic it does look pretty hot.
edit: the pic did help, it seems that when they where off you wouldnt/could see or tell that you had them. But still in the daytime I dont think (according the the top post with the pic of installed) if the bulbs/leds are bright enough to have the light blend together to give you a solid light (where as in the case of say elwire... ) but they def will look hot imo at night/in the dark

Its really really hard to say. Its one of those things that u gotta see it in full action b 4 u decide if it looks good or not.
U said u already made it right? well why dont u take the next step and finish ur project, hit up the night shots and day time shots and everyone can decide then.

Looks good, how's the install? If you make them any rough ideas on a price point?

$1.97 for a mini-blind adjuster rod, two 60 cent 3mm leds, a 5 cent resistor and some wire/tape/shrink wrap.

also would you have a switch to turn them on and off or is is with the your headlights
and you should paint the whitish insert thingy black
it would be really cool to see a DIY for this

I like how it looks on the TC. I don't know how it would look on the Yaris though. I guess we need a guinea pig :P
What's that "tube" to put the leds on and where did you get it?
I'm trying to do some LED underdash lighting and those "holders" would come in really handy!

Looks good i say use it as the indicator. So the top part of the headlight assemble becomes high beam and the lower part is used for the hid kit. Only thing is you could so something like what he did for the orange side marker would be also good. That stock sidemarker would ruin the beauty is you go ahead with the project.

Here is how you make them: http://www.geocities.com/jvxdriver/eagle_eyes.htm or video version: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=980547339061120203
I used a rod that I found at Lowe's - it is shaped like a Star of David rather than hexagonal - I think it refracts better.

Thats a no brainer... do it. Then, tell us how you did it. You are going to have the nicest headlights on a Yaris in North America if you finish that projector setup and this.

That's a nice project... Prolly tomorrow I'll head to the nearest home depot for the rods and check if the sale my dad found a few weeks back is still on. He found a pack of 5 White LED flashlights for 5 bucks. I don't care for the flashlights, but I do for the LEDS and maybe a pair of projectos for some small driving markers (until I get the fog lights ;-) )

saw a pair of angel eyes pulling up behind me on the freeway the other night, it looked so hot, and then when it pulled up next to me, it was just a BMW station wagon of some sort, but still the headlights were super hot.

instead of curving the light down toward the front of the car, why not up by the side of the orange reflector thing (refer to the top right picture)?

The closest Home Depot had the LED flashlights but not the clear rods. Now I started my classes so I don't think I'll get to work on the lightning project anytime soon:(.
If anyone is intereted, Home depot has a pack of 5 Husky white LED flashlights for $4. You get 5 white led Flashlights (to obtain 5 bright leds and their driving circuitry and 10 AAA batteries. A small 600ohm resistor will drive the Leds for any need you might have ;)

This is a much better place to get LEDs: http://www.lsdiodes.com/
They have 3mm LEDs that are 5,000 mcd (I think - site is down) and 5mm, 12,000 mcd LEDs. That's really, really bright. They also have a link to a calculator (in the resistor section) that calculates the proper resistor for you.

Thanks to all who responded. I was all set to do this - I had them all fabricated, put them in place and tested them out. It really looked pretty good. The problem is - there is a plastic piece inside of the headlight housing that slips in between the two chrome pieces when the headlight is together - right where the eybrow sits. I could have modified it but decided not to.
I see Audi copied me. The new R8 will have a row of 12 LEDs as running lights on the bottom of the light. I should get $10 from each sale.

You need that space for the reflector to move so you can adjust the headlights down.
I thought about a row of LEDs like the R8 will have, but don't really like the look of a bunch of point sources.
Are they installed yet? pics?

here's a somewhat farfetched idea but maybe you can try drilling some 5mm or 3mm holes into the "eye lashes" of the LB housing and then wiring them up to the parking lights? like i said, it's farfetched
also, aside from the fitting problems what other problems were there?
Violin
04-27-2007, 06:52 AM
Oh you could drill and mount individual LEDs all sorts of ways. You'd need to wire it up properly with appropriate resistors of course.
I'm not a fan of the bunch of little point sources of light look like the photo Blenjar posted though. I wanted a look more like the angel eyes around BMW lights. It just couldn't be done without hacking up the housing and I didn't want to do that.
yrsdrgn
04-27-2007, 11:26 PM
hold up....so if you were to put angel eyes onto your retrofitted HIDs you'd have to hack away at the shroud or the housing?
Violin

If I had put these in, I'd have to modify the interior trim pieces.

The piece that would need to be trimmed is the opaque plastic piece that rides inside the lens.

ChinoCharles
04-29-2007, 12:26 AM
I think what he was saying was it would take too much cutting to get them to fit. You'd have to cut part of the headlight cover off, a scary thing when the only two headlights you have are the two you're cutting. This is left to the more adventurous type. Who's calling dibs? For +284,000 put eyebrows in a Yaris.
