Best replacement tire size for stock rims?

Kind of unsure what tire size to get because some say with the stock 185/60's that the speedometer is incorrect, but other sizes show to be incorrect as well. What would be the best replacement size for the stock 15" rims? I'm running Tein springs.

I'd be surprised if the speedo was off with 185/60's since that is what Toyota puts on stock. Speedometers are factory set based on stock diameters.

Either way, the speedo change is negligible with only slight size variations. It's not something to concern yourself with.

I personally prefer 195/60's. They offer a fuller look that slightly extends beyond the wheel cover. The 185's look too thin and undersized IMO with the wheel covers protruding beyond them - not a great look. I've clocked my speed with a GPS and the speedo was accurate even with 195's. Plus, performance/stability naturally improves with the wider tread.


EDIT: Forgot you said you were lowered. In this case, perhaps a 195/55 would be a better choice since you have less wheel gap. :smile:

My speedo was off with the stock 185/60/15's, but is dead on with 205/50/16's.

With Tein springs, I would recommend 205/50/15's.

Well the 14" came stock in Canada as far as I know and there's no changes in the speedo setting between our 15" Yarii's and Canadas 14" ones.

So what would be the better choice then..195/55 or a 205/50?
Are they going to bulge out too much since the rims are only 5.5?
And how about sidewall flex, will that be a problem since they will stick
out more?

205's will fit safely on 5.5" rim.

Why don't test your speedomoter? Use the highway mile markes and compare the difference for 10 miles between the actual miles and your odometer. Assuming the speedometer and the odometer are in sync, you should know how accurate your car is. My stock set up is very accurate.

The 14"s come with 65's to adjust for the overall diameter.

As far as tire flex, I wouldn't worry about it with 195 or 205's. Tire flex is due more to sidewall height than width. Really, you'll have more grip and stability in the corners with these wider options.

Im going back to the 185/60 15s, I run stock steelies. I had replaced all four with 195/65 15s and it was bad. Mainly the 65 part, way too much sidewall lots of flex. The increased overall diameter\weight means your just pissing torque away too. It was noticable. The guy at discount tire company suggested them, i said okay, now I know better. Wider is ok, taller's not. I'll go wider when I get some lighter rims to make up the difference in unsprung wieght.
I order tires from tiresonline.com and install them myself with a harbor frieght tire changer and bubble balancer. First one was a beating, now it takes about 10 min a tire.

I can't believe he sold you 195/65/15's for a Yaris. More proof to never let these morons make decisions for you. Tire shops are known for selling stuff that just needs to be unloaded from inventory. Always do your own research and decide on a tire/size before going into a store.

However, you don't need to go back to 185's. 195's are very good, just keep the aspect ratio to 60 or below.

Thanks for the help guys. So I'm leaning towards 195-55's. Would the 205-50-15
give me any trouble since I'm riding low with the Teins?

^ Nope. And I'd go for 205/50's unless you're running these in the snow. Then I'd recommend the 185's.

Yeah i'm going to be running these in the snow. Not really feeling the 185s though, they charge alot more than they do for 195's, atleast here they do anyway

I've ran four different sizes on 15's so far (205/50, 195/55, 195/50, 185/60) and I while I loved the 205/50 and 195/55 or 50's in the summer, they sucked in any sort of snow accumulation.

But if you're going for price only, 195/50's are usually cheaper than 195/55's since it's a common size for the Honda guys.
