View Full Version : So what is this?

I was driving earlier today and heard a thump, and the sound of metal dropping on the ground. Now whether it was from my car, or the truck from me, I'm not really sure, but as I checked my rear view mirror I saw something metal on the ground. Just in case, I picked it up, and took it home with me. This is what it is:

I'm not familiar with the underside of the car, but nothing seems to be out of place, or even rusted like this part. So if anything, I was just wondering if I should even be worried at all?

Looks like a heat shield to me. They always break away at the mounting points in the corners.

Hmmmm okay. Should I get this fixed asap or is this something that can be put off?

No worries. I personally do not know of anyone who has ever bothered to replace a heat shield that has fallen off.
Most times, they come loose in one corner, rattle like a sum-beach, and owner will just rip it out to stop the noise.

I agree it looks like a heat shield, I don't have my Yaris with me so I can't look under there to see if I can locate it. You ask " I was just wondering if I should even be worried at all? ", worried, I'm not sure but I would get that corrected. If automakers could eliminate just one washers per car they would ASAP, now that's a lot of washers. Just my 2 cents worth.

Ahhh okay. Yeah I don't plan on bringing it to the dealership seeing that they'll probably charge some random sum to get a new heat shield. It's safe just weld this back on to the car right?

if you can locate where it goes mig welding back on should be fine, just be careful.

Sounds good. Thank you to you two for the information. If anyone out there thinks it isn't the heat shield, then please let me know.

^ who knows, might not even be yours. Too cold for me to go crawling around my car to see if it looks like one of ours.

I didn't even see the paragraph above the picture :bonk:, as you say it might not even be from LEGATO Yaris. Hopefully someone can take a look under there Yaris to clear this up.

The more I look at the pic, the more certain I am that it did not come from a Yaris.
I believe we have 3 heat shields.
- between the exhaust manifold and the firewall
- between the cat and the under-body
- and another one around the muffler area and the under-body
This is speaking as a LB owner. You have a sedan so there may be some differences but probably not.

Yeah that's the thing. The LB to Sedan ration is quite high, so I was hoping a sedan owner could enlighten us real quick haha.

Being you're not getting help from sedan owners I'd suggest taking it ( heat shield ) to the dealer and asking them if/where the shield is located, as I said you can mig weld it back on....just clean the rusty area being welder. If you don't have a mig welder or a friend that does there might be a way using rad hose clamps, I'd be happy to weld it for you but the drive might be a little much.

I've looked under my car plenty of times and that part doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. If it is a part of the car that there will most likely be a part # stamped on it like 95% of the other parts on our car.

Haha thanks for the offer! I'll see what a friend can do if anything.
